If you’ve been tempted by the simplicity and hassle-free nature of Chrome OS but wanted a bigger screen, then the Acer Chromebook 15 is for you. We do wish Acer had been more ambitious, opting for a brighter, higher quality, higher resolution screen, even if this had pushed up the price, rather than retreading old ground and taking the easy way out.

Chromebook isn’t for everyone, particularly those people who need to use legacy applications. For the rest, if whatever you need works in the browser, you’re set for Chrome OS. Perhaps Acer’s hunk, or something smaller.

The Acer Chromebook 15 is a solid computing device, with great value for its $350 price tag. The thick plastic chassis not only looks great, but offers a level of durability and build quality that isn’t often seen at this price range. The 15.6-inch FHD display might not be perfect, but 1080p resolution is another nice boon at this price. Not too mention the laptop’s long lasting battery life and strong performance with its fifth generation Intel Celeron CPU.

The model I tested retails for $350, a fair price for what you get given the rest of the Chromebook market. It’s worth noting though $250 will get you the same body without the HD screen. However, given that the screen is the main selling point here, it’s hard to take the cheaper model with its 1366 x 768 pixel display seriously. A screen this big should be stuffed with pixels.

The Acer Chromebook 15 (CB5-571-C09S) may be the largest model ever, but when you boil it down, that's really all it has to offer. Otherwise, it offers a standard Chromebook experience, just with a larger display and chassis. If you've been feeling cramped by the small size of most models, then perhaps this is the system for you. For most shoppers, however, I'd recommend looking at other Chromebooks with unique features, as there are plenty of systems in this price range that offer more compelling takes on the basic Chromebook, like the Toshiba CB35-B3340 Chromebook 2, which has a 13-inch full HD display and Skullcandy audio, or the Editors' Choice HP Chromebook 11 (Verizon LTE), which offers more mobility, thanks to wireless data.

The Acer Chromebook 15 is a excellent Chrome OS laptop, but it asks you whether you need a machine this big just to run a Chrome browser? For most people, that answer would be no, but I would easily pick this machine over any budget 15.6-inch Windows laptop. It's simply better built and comes at a better price to boot. The 15-inch display on this laptop itself would even be worth the $349 or £249 (about AU$458) price of admission.

There's really only one question you need to ask yourself in considering Acer's Chromebook 15: Are you looking for a large-screen Chrome OS laptop that can serve as a desktop replacement? If yes, then the $350 Chromebook 15 is almost certainly the system for you.

If you're looking for a simple laptop that works well, and don't need to carry it everywhere, the Acer Chromebook 15 is a solid investment. Its large display is good for Web surfing and working on spreadsheets, and its speedy performance makes it a dependable device for productivity. The loud speakers and long-lasting battery are other pluses. I just wish the screen were brighter and more colorful.

Acer’s Chromebook 15 has mid-range PC specs and a very lightweight operating system in Chrome OS. The performance we see is expected, really. A real story would be poor performance. Chromebook 15 is not going to let you down.

For however you might feel about Google's Chrome OS and Chromebooks, there's no denying that they are popular alternatives to Windows and Mac computers mainly because they're inexpensive, relatively secure and what can be done within the confines of its browser-based environment continues to grow.

Acer has a history of building excellent Chromebooks. That may be due of experience; it was, along with Samsung, one of the first two manufacturers to jump on board. And the Chromebook 15 continues the company’s record of hits. Aside from the design, which may appear gaudy to some, there’s a lot to like and little to complain about. The display is excellent, battery life is respectable, and performance is excellent.
