Apple's 12-inch MacBook gets more attention due to its high-res display, but the 11-inch Air is a more practical solution for students and those who want a highly portable notebook. Its performance, keyboard and battery life hit all the right notes for a sub-3-pound ultraportable.

The new MacBook does pose something of a problem for the MacBook line, simply because it's so much more expensive than the MacBook Air - already a fabulous ultra-thin laptop with a great battery life. The thing is, the MacBook Air has always suffered from something of an image problem, coming across as the MacBook Pro's dweeby, under-powered little brother.

We don't see a whole lot of middle ground when it comes to the new MacBook. Potential buyers are either going to embrace the super thin and incredibly lightweight laptop along with Apple's effort to deliver an almost entirely wireless experience, or they're going to poo-poo the lack of connectivity and cost of adapters.

Including just one USB Type-C port and tampering with the MacBook Air's near-perfect keyboard were daring, if unsurprising moves considering Apple's penchant for minimalism. Holding the new MacBook in the hand is like seeing into the future of laptop design; it's the MacBook Air all over again. Tablets are expected to sell poorly for a second consecutive year in 2015 as people look toward thin and light computers that let them get real work done, an area where the new MacBook excels.

This year Apple chose thinness over connectivity, basically obliging users to go wireless with their peripheral devices. You'll want to think about that before buying. When it comes to everything else, the 2015 MacBook 12-inch is impeccably well designed, it has long-lasting battery life and it performs adequately well for basic uses.

The new MacBook isn't the fastest Mac ever -- but then again, with a size and weight perfect for traveling, it doesn't need to be. The MacBook offers a full OS X 10 experience in a package nearly as portable as the iPad. If your digital lifestyle is mostly on-the-go with an emphasis on wireless, this could be the computer for you.

Apple’s 12in Retina MacBook is a stunning ultra-portable laptop. Its sturdiness, battery life, screen quality and touchpad are rivalled only by Apple’s other laptops. If portability is absolutely paramount, then the MacBook’s light weight and battery life make it a superb choice, but its unique one-port configuration and reliance on wireless peripherals may make it challenging to fit into how you work – at least in the short to medium term.

Right now, though, it offers too little for too much. It’s beautiful, well-engineered, and cutting-edge, but it’s not a good value. Go to the nearest Apple store. Marvel at its engineering. And then buy the MacBook Pro. Unless you spend most of your time working from an airplay tray, it’s the more sensible choice.

Whatever your stance, embracing the future ahead of the curve does mean you'll have to wait for everyone else to catch up, which at times might mean you'll end up getting caught out. We haven't been brave enough to go out without the USB dongle also in the bag, for example. The future is exciting, but now without its flaws. And there's no doubt about it: the 12-inch MacBook is the future of laptops.

There’s no simple answer to this question. The new MacBook is brilliant. It’s a joy to use, looks incredible and runs silently like an iPad does. It’s a model of what future laptops will be like, but with a price tag to match that ambition. However, there’s a red line in this argument that overrules all opposing concerns. You can either live with its new-fangled single USB-C port, or you can’t. If you think you’ll need a bunch of adapters to do what you want, then you should buy a different laptop. That’s it. Yes, it’s pretty and you may really want to own it, but you shouldn’t.

Apple's new MacBook is an impressive machine considering how thin it is and it certainly makes up for the non-retina MacBook Air models. The problem is that the thin design also introduces a number of issues. It is almost too small to use at times. Connecting it to peripherals is a very big hassle right now that could be corrected as the USB Type C connector gets adopted by more people

The decision of whether you should buy a new MacBook is a simple one: does it play to your strengths? Perhaps you need the lightest and most portable OS X machine out there today, one with good battery life. Maybe you appreciate an incredible, vibrant display that's equally as good at rendering your crisp documents as it is displaying the same amount of a spreadsheet as a 24-inch monitor.

The design of the new MacBook is world class. It’s wonderfully slim, light and sturdy, with the added bonus of a high quality Retina display. However, the MacBook’s entry-level performance is disappointing, and the limited connectivity may deter some people from taking the plunge until USB-C becomes a bit more mainstream.

The MacBook is a project fueled by ambition. Somewhere in Apple’s ranks is a person who set out to make a notebook thinner and lighter than anything before it. That they have. The MacBook is thin, light and striking. Place it on a desk and it deems everything else antique. Carry it on the go and it will be with the same sense of pride one carries an Italian made brief case.

It’s hard not to fall in love with the new MacBook. It’s a staggeringly-brilliant bit of engineering and doesn’t compromise on usability, even though it is incredibly tiny. On the face of things, the starting price of £1,049 seems fairly expensive, but it’s £30 less than the equivalent 13-inch MacBook Air with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, and only £70 more than the 11-inch MacBook Air with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. Given the new MacBook's better display and lower weight, we’d definitely buy it over either of the Air models. Performance is the big issue for this laptop: it’s got enough grunt for simple tasks, making it a good choice as a second computer for working on the move. If you just want one laptop that does everything, however, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is still the model for you.

The MacBook is a triumph in notebook miniaturisation, squeezing a Retina IPS display and full-size keyboard into a 13 mm (at its thickest) tapered chassis, with weight below 1 kg. At over £1000 it’s more an executive notebook than the everyman laptop once given the name MacBook, but that money buys a sleek statement in what’s now possible in lightweight ultraportables. The fan-free design heralds a breakthrough in silent computing and while it is measurably behind the MacBook Air in performance it doesn’t often show it in everyday use.

There’s no doubt, however, that Apple has succeeded in what it set out to do. That is to create a sub-1kg laptop as usable as far larger laptops, as long-lasting and powerful as most people need, and that doesn’t make compromises in display or build quality to achieve its goals. Yes, it’s expensive; no, it isn’t for everyone – but it is a superb laptop all the same.

For a company that prides itself for attention to detail, the single-port design is an intentional choice, one that doesn't just project Apple's vision of the future of laptops, but identifies the ideal user of this MacBook. This isn't going to be a laptop for someone who needs to plug into a monitor every day, nor is it going to be someone who needs a computer for video editing. It's a laptop for coffee shops, airplanes, and hotel rooms. For shoulder bags instead of laptop bags. And that's OK.

It's controversial; it's sexy and built as perfectly as any Apple product. That's the 12" MacBook, a 2 lb. laptop that's sturdy enough to throw in your bag with little care, yet it can get any basic computing task done quickly. The biggest problem with the MacBook may be how hard it is to get one. At launch it wasn't available in stores and immediately went to a 4-6 week backorder status.

Right now, from our initial glance, it appears Apple is targeting the on-the-go professional, with someone who relies heavily on a wireless environment to get their work done, using their computer for web surfing, some light office and productivity work, and generally is after something as high class as they are. Consider us intrigued, because thin isn’t just in, it’s also waving its arms about trying to get the attention of everyone… and succeeding.

It's lighter and much slimmer than the latest Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch, and its battery lasts longer. In contrast, the new Macbook makes a laptop truly a laptop again. No heat to scorch your lap. Lightweight enough that you can be working for hours without losing sensation in the rest of your legs. Likewise, this new MacBook will also be the right fit for a smaller segment of a public than the more universally useful 13-inch MacBook Air or Pro. But those who can work with the limitations -- primarily a lack of ports, shorter battery life, performance that's not suited for pro-level photo and video editing, and a shallow keyboard that takes some getting used to -- will love its sharp display, slim and light body, and responsive touchpad.

It’s a tough choice between the MacBook and Surface 3 Pro. Both have their strong points and weaknesses, but overall we’d have to choose the MacBook. It imposes some limitations that may start off awkward, but it’s likely you’ll quickly adapt to them. But it’s clearly not for everyone. The professional show-off will love how tiny and sexy it is, but the regular user for whom a laptop is also as a repository for photos or a portal to entertainment will find alternatives that suit them better.
