The Apple MacBook Pro 16 (2021) has been my main machine for the past seven months. It’s not polished. It’s not pretty. It’s got grease on the keycaps, a tattered folding stand on the bottom, and a worn leather skin on top. It’s traveled tens of thousands of miles with me, and it’s produced every one of the MrMobile videos I’ve uploaded since I bought it (including this one). While I prefer other laptops for play, 2021’s MacBook Pro is an indispensable tool for my work – the best I’ve ever used. Join me to see why, in MrMobile's MacBook Pro 2021 Review.

The MacBook Pro 2021 (16-inch) is an across-the-board improvement over its predecessor, so if you’ve been considering investing in a 16-inch Pro this is unquestionably the model to buy. With its remarkable battery life, outstanding speed, smartly redesigned chassis and big, beautiful screen, this is a versatile pro laptop that will serve you equally well in work or play. And if you’re willing to pay the price, configuring it with one of Apple’s brawny new M1 Max chips will guarantee you some of the best performance you can buy in a MacBook. But if you look back over our test results you’ll see that in many key areas, the 16-inch Pro with a top-of-the-line M1 Max chip didn’t perform much better than the 14-inch Pro 2021 with an M1 Pro chip. Most of the time we saw nearly the same performance from a roughly $3k 14-inch Pro 2021 as we did from a 16-inch Pro 2021 that costs just over $4k, though the M1 Max did deliver significantly better performance than the M1 Pro in video games and 3DMark.

Fast, with a razor-sharp screen, excellent build quality, and a happy reunion with MagSafe, HDMI and SD card readers, the 16in MacBook Pro with M1 Max is a high ranking professional computer. This is not a computer for the average user - if that's you buy a 13in MacBook Pro with an M1 processor instead. This is a computer for professional users that will render more pixels than there are people on Earth.

Even workstations like the Asus ProArt StudioBook 16 and Dell Precision 5760 couldn’t keep up with the new 2021 MacBook Pros in our testing lab, though those workstations offer other useful features (like 4K displays) that Apple's new Pros lack.

The MacBook Pro 16 is a star in all the ways that matter. It’s a leader in battery life, display quality, and performance for its size. The keyboard is great, the touchpad is top-notch, and its design is gorgeous. It’s in every way an upgrade from the 2019 MacBook Pro 16 it replaced. Additionally, Apple’s transition from Intel to its own custom chips unlocked a new world of apps ported from iOS. However, most apps designed for Intel-powered Macs still work. macOS pairs well with cloud services like iMessage, Photos, iCloud Drive, and Apple Arcade, making it ideal if you already own an iPhone. The Windows alternatives, such as Dell’s XPS 17 and Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Extreme, are often more affordable and offer entry-level models for those on a modest budget. Still, the MacBook Pro 16 remains a good value overall. Its performance and battery life beat the competition. That won't help if you can’t afford it, of course. If you can, though, don’t let the price turn you off. The MacBook Pro 16 is worth it.

Without a doubt – the M1 Max is the most powerful chip ever to be put on a MacBook. This sounded an awful lot like Apple itself. Let’s paraphrase – the M1 Max is the best all-around laptop chip to be ever made. In certain applications, it is the fastest, while in others gets beaten by the Core i7-11800H, and the Ryzen 9 5900HS. However, with the 32-core graphics card trading blows with the 130W RTX 3060, and the 100W RTX 3080 in different applications and even games, we can’t express our admiration enough. And it turns into anticipation for the future, where AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA step up their game. At the end of the day, you get great build quality, premium feel (albeit from an old-looking shell), and arguably the best speaker system on a laptop, which puts some BlueTooth speakers to shame. This laptop is a game-changer. It definitely needs improvements in some areas, but given the fact how easy the macOS is to use, and the plug-and-play nature of the ecosystem, we think that Apple taught the entire industry a valuable lesson. And we expect (and hope) the industry to respond.

As one of the newest and more expensive laptops on the market, it’s no surprise that I’m giving the MacBook Pro top marks in practice. Blazing speed, a great screen, and all day and then some battery life make this a great laptop for almost any use. However, the design is back to the basics and road warriors might want to consider a lighter, less bulky model. But, if you depend on your MacBook for demanding tasks, this is a must-buy.

The maxed-out MacBook Pro 16in M1 Max is overkill unless you have very specific requirements: a need to scythe through high-res footage; a career in complex 3D graphics, number crunching or audio projects; or an obsession with bragging rights. There is a middle ground. If you’re not fussed about laptop portability and weight but do care about display size, quality audio and raw power, the 16in M1 Pro would be an excellent option. And if you do want portability, make do with the smaller display and go for the 14in model. Either way, the 16in MacBook Pro is an objectively hugely impressive piece of kit. And that’s the case when considering the revamped design, improved display and audio, or the fact Apple’s this time listened to its pro audience and given them what they asked for.

The new MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch are triumphs. They solve just about all of the complaints of the old machines, while pushing the whole world of laptops forward by setting a new standard for performance in this kind of size. At the same time, these MacBook Pros really are for pros. The level of power they offer is so high that I would suggest that most people really should think about sticking with the M1 MacBook Air unless you're expecting to push the GPU to the limit here, or simply must have 32GB of memory. But the screen may well pull you back in, because even amateur photographers or those who watch movies on their laptop will be blown away by the image quality on offer here. If you just want a MacBook Pro because you like to have the greatest laptop, you should think about sticking with the lowest-end version. But for creative pros, the power on offer here is just awesome, and it's more flexible for working on the go than anything else on the market.

In this review, I'll cover various aspects of the new 14 and 16" MacBook Pros, including the three puzzle pieces that together make them the BEST laptops in the world: Design, Reliability and Performance. I also go through the backstory and how these MacBook Pros came to be, and what ultimately pushed Apple to ditch Intel. Finally, I go through a bunch of performance tests and recommend the models I think you should buy.

This is the type of work that the MacBook Pro 14in and 16in are made for. And considering the pandemic and working from home, they are exemplary, as you can work anywhere with even the most demanding work, without the need for a desktop computer. Of course, professional machines have an equally professional price. The 2022 16in MacBook Pro costs from £2,399/$2,499, although it its the M1 Max you want you’re looking at £3,399/$3,499 (or, if you are happy to opt for the M1 Max with 24-core GPU option instead, a minimum of £2,999/$3,099). This is a breathtaking sum for an ordinary consumer who surfs, emails and flicks through the Pictures app. But for the professional user who has to render millions of pixels in a virtual 3D landscape or the editor who has to cut a feature film, who can now do it wherever they are, there is nothing to talk about. But damn it is expensive!

The new 16-inch MacBook Pro is expensive, but the top-end M1 Max chip proves that Apple Silicon can genuinely go toe-to-toe with the most powerful mobile workstations available from rival PC manufacturers. It also brings those extra little Apple touches to the table, such as the outstanding Liquid Retina XDR Display for high-end graphics and video work, and the laptop's sleek, slimline design. And, of course, there's the impressive battery life, which really throws down the gauntlet for Apple's Windows rivals. All of this suggests that Apple is finally focusing on the needs of its professional users once more.

Apple has finally released M1 versions of the 16” MacBook Pro for creatives. The 2021 model is available with M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, and we tested both for this review so you can see the performance differences. The macOS laptop has a striking 16.2” Mini LED XDR display with 120Hz refresh (aka Pro Motion), Magic Keyboard with Fn row (no more touch bar), Thunderbolt 4, MagSafe 3 fast charging, and the return of HDMI and an SD card slot. It’s available with up to 64GB unified memory, up to 8TB storage and your choice of a 16, 24 or 32 core GPU (we test the 16 and 32 core GPUs). A 100 WHr battery, compact charger and long battery life round up the features. We compare these new 16” models’ performance to the outgoing 2019 model as well as competing Windows laptops like the Razer Blade 15, Dell XPS 15, Surface Laptop Studio and desktop replacement gaming laptops.

So: those are the new MacBook Pros. They are some of the best laptops we have ever tested, with an unbeatable combination of lightning fast performance and tremendous battery life. And Apple seems to have come back to reality in terms of design — well, apart from that notch. But adding some useful ports and ditching the Touch Bar are just smart, practical choices, and honestly worth the upgrade for many people. So what are the knocks? The biggest one is that these machines are expensive. If you’re an actual pro, the prices are perhaps easy to justify given the performance, but if you’re just doing everyday productivity work, you can get a lot of great laptops for less than the $2,000 starting price of the 14-inch MacBook Pro. And Apple only putting 16GB of RAM in the base models and charging $400 for an upgrade to 32GB is just ridiculous. The other is that Apple is still in the midst of the transition to its own chips, and the software ecosystem isn’t totally there. These machines feel like the future, but parts of that future are still a little bit hazy

That's the million-dollar question -- or at least the $2,500-and-up question. Every video editor and creative pro I've spoken to is either excited to get or has already preordered one. For that audience, the decision comes down more to screen size and a small, medium or large number of GPU cores. If you're not specifically going to use these new hardware capabilities and just want the latest, coolest MacBook, know that you're making what is essentially a vanity purchase. The plain old $999 MacBook Air, with its own M1 Chip, is still the most universally useful laptop most people can buy. You do, however, lose out on the new 1080p webcam, which is frankly fantastic. We will continue to update this review with additional test scores and analysis, including battery test scores (my initial video streaming battery test ran for 16.5 hours), in the coming weeks.

So while the improved 16-inch MacBook Pro may be a stunning laptop in isolation, reanimating some of the essentials that Mac-minded pro creatives have been clamoring after for years, it isn’t quite the major leap forward for the MacBook Pro line that the new 14-inch model is. The latter is the clear choice for content creation professionals who need a mobile workstation that ably balances the competing demands of portability, affordability, and power. If you've got the dough, though, and your cutting-edge, high-res 4K or 8K workflow revolves around deskbound work in applications like Final Cut Pro and content employing the ProRes codecs, the M1 Max will bear further investigation.

So if you’re in the market for one of these new computers, which should you get? If you’re mostly using it for general productivity tasks, then I’d lean towards the 14-inch model, which was just easier to travel with. It’s a good option for coders and people who may not need a ton of screen real estate. But all of the video and audio producers I’ve talked to were unequivocal: they wanted to go big with the 16-inch model. The biggest downside of the new MacBook Pros are their high prices — but really, what else do you expect from Apple? The 14-inch model, in particular, will probably give you the vapors if you're comparing it to the 13-inch MacBook Pro. But in the world of gaming and high-end productivity notebooks, Apple's pricing isn't that far off. The Razer Blade 14, for example, is just two hundred dollars less than the MacBook Pro 14-inch. Dell's XPS 15 OLED is around $500 cheaper than the cheapest 16-inch MBP, but that's with a CPU that's much slower than Apple's. Once you start speccing that machine up, though, you’ll likely pay close to $2,500.

To be blunt, the M1 Max MacBook Pro is overkill for the majority of consumers, including me, despite my semi-professional status as a video content maker. This is a machine for real, actual creative professionals who need a lot of horsepower on the regular to churn out their daily work. If your work involves twiddling your thumbs while waiting on your computer to finish its processing task, then there’s a good chance that this MacBook Pro is aimed at making your thumb-twiddling breaks a whole lot shorter. The cherry on top is that you can carry this machine around with fair ease, so you could be making use of all of this horsepower while at a hotel, on-site at some event, in a cafe, waiting at the airport lounge, or docked in your office or home. The Apple MacBook Pro (2021) puts the Pro back into Apple’s laptop lineup, and it goes beyond the lip service. If you are not a creative professional, if your main laptop use case is just to type words, surf the web, and watch YouTube videos, then buying this machine with M1 Max
