The experience closes on January 27th at 11:59pm PST and I promise, you don’t want to miss this! Why the M1 iPad Pro is still MORE than enough (for ALMOST all users). Is the M1 iPad Pro still worth it in 2022? Or better yet should you buy the M1 iPad Pro in 2023?? I say yes the M1 iPad Pro is a smarter purchase than the M2 iPad Pro for MOST of us. But is the M2 iPad Pro worth it for artists?

When Steve Jobs first revealed the iPad back in 2010, it was all about casual reading and surfing from the sofa, and about access to apps to empower, entertain and educate us. More than a decade on, the latest iPad Pro still embraces those principles. For today's creative types who want more than just basic typing and surfing, though, it's a more empowering experience - largely thanks to the M1 processor - bringing greater opportunity for both work and play. For all intents and purposes, the iPad Pro 12.9-inch is like a touchscreen-enabled MacBook Pro with 5G connectivity that runs iPadOS instead of macOS. It's the closest to a laptop replacement that Apple has ever taken the iPad. Yet, the iPad Pro is still in transition. It doesn't completely replace the laptop just yet, because Apple hasn't quite cracked the software. So, if that's what you're after, let's hope continued updated to iPadOS in 2022 and beyond changes that.

Putting that aside for one moment, however, it’s quite clear that the iPad Pro 12.9in is a fabulous piece of hardware and categorically the best tablet you can buy. It’s as powerful as the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, it has great battery life for a device this compact and the new Mini-LED display tech puts it in a different league. In many ways it’s as good as, if not better than, a traditional laptop. However, it’s being held back by silly restrictions like the inability to make full use of a second display and its eye-watering price. If you buy both the tablet and keyboard, it’s considerably more expensive than the equivalent Apple MacBook Air, although the iPad admittedly has a touchscreen and a far nicer display. This is the dilemma that Apple must contend with now that it has brought the iPad to full parity with its laptop and desktop machines. It’s fabulous hardware, no doubt, but it’s being held back from true greatness by the limitations of its software.

iOS limitations and app availability permitting, the iPad Pro could very well be the only device you need to take to the office. It's still ultra-portable, the M1 chip is far more powerful than expected, its battery will comfortably see you through the day, and the bright XDR display should please filmmakers, photographers and consumers alike. Apple has spent years now trying to convince the world that its tablets can replace traditional laptops, but with proper mouse and keyboard support, increased memory allowances, more thoughtful Apple Pencil functionality, and even improved game controller support for developers and tinkerers, forgetting your laptop back home isn't suddenly a cause for concern. So long as your workflow is mostly cloud and app-based, there's a good chance the iPad Pro will be more than up to the task. And when you get home, chilling in bed with a movie will help you wind down without wondering how much better it could have looked on the big screen downstairs. It's a pricey investment, but there's no reason it can't last half a decade if you need it to.

I have a bit of a problem. After years of packing my backpacks for tech events, I’ve developed an obsession with lightness. While I’ve generally been able to shrink my load down over the years, there’s one particular elephant in the room I haven’t been able to do without. You see, even laptops that are marketed as “ultra-portable” often weigh well over 1kg and they don’t fit in my preferred bag. And that’s why for the past couple of years, I’ve always been trying to replace this big bulky laptop with an iPad, because the tiny iPad will fit in my preferred EDC. But the thing is, there was always a compromise. Sometimes it was performance, sometimes it’s the way you interact with an iPad, and sometimes it’s the limited software. Then, Apple launched this, the iPad Pro 12.9”, and it was almost like the stars aligned. It has the same processor Apple puts into their MacBooks, it has a technologically advanced mini LED display, it has a proper keyboard and trackpad interface, plus software that’s way closer to the functionality of a laptop than it ever was.

Apple’s Pro tablets have, as the name suggests, always been aimed at professional, creative types, and they will be delighted by the huge power brought to the new models by the M1 chip. Our focus is on the picture and sound, though, and the iPad Pro 12.9 is at least as exciting here. The picture performance is superb – punchy and deep, vibrant and natural, exciting and nuanced. It's right up there with that of the very best TVs you can buy. Sound, meanwhile, is great from the speakers, excellent via standard Bluetooth or wired headphones, and simply amazing with a pair of AirPods Max cans. This is a hugely expensive tablet and the price is hard to justify for anyone who has no intention of taking advantage of its productivity potential, but it’s also the best tablet you can buy for watching movies on the move. Sure, this is a luxury device, but it’s an extremely persuasive one.

I got an iPad Pro to see if it can replace my Surface and my computer. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. While it's an excellent device, iPad OS holds back the full potential of the iPad Pro, and even the potential of the M1 chip inside. You can buy one if you want to change the way you work and switch over to using mobile-first apps but be prepared for missing features. Trust me when I say it, as much as Apple wants the iPad to be a Surface replacement, it can not. The iPad will always be a tablet and not your main computer.

Yes, if you are looking for a device that lets you work from home as well as office and when you go for a staycation in the hills. Also, a great upgrade for those on earlier generation iPads that are at least two years old. For those thinking of a device that is not as heavy or large as a laptop but can still do everything they want to, this is an easy pick. And yes, the creative people among us now get a device that has the power to execute everything their imagination comes up with.

The 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 is hard to fault. It really is an impressive device, though arguably overkill for most people. Pair it with a Magic Keyboard (read our 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 review for more details) and it goes a very long way to replacing a laptop - especially if you don’t need to use obscure software that will only run on a Mac or PC. But it will almost certainly cost more than even a high-end laptop - even a MacBook Pro 13 - so you've really got to want and utilise the tablet design and touchscreen here. Multitasking is about to get better in iPadOS 15, and more apps will surely begin to really exploit the incredible performance on offer. But even right now, if you can justify the high cost, it’s simply the best tablet money can buy.

The price dictates this approach as much as anything else and the iPad Pro sits firmly in premium laptop territory. Prices start at £999 for the 12.9in Wi-Fi model with 128GB of storage; the Smart Keyboard Folio adds a further £199 while the Magic Keyboard with touchpad adds £329. That brings the price of the 12.9in iPad pro up to £1,328 if you want the full laptop alternative experience. In many ways, it’s as good as a traditional laptop - if not better. The new iPad Pro is too good for its operating system. An absolute hardware tour de force, this $1,099, 12.9-inch tablet is gorgeously built, with power to match the latest Apple laptops, the finest screen we've ever seen on a slate, and connectivity options that the latest MacBooks can't touch. But iPadOS can't take advantage of the new power under the hood, which means the $599-and-up iPad Air is still our Editors' Choice winner for Apple tablets.

What you're probably wondering is whether it makes sense for you to spend four figures on a tablet, when you could buy an iPad Air for $599 or a MacBook Pro for about as much as the iPad Pro. My answer to most people is an emphatic "no." If you want a premium tablet and a smaller screen isn't a deal-breaker, save your money and get the iPad Air which shares the most important features with its pricier sibling. The iPad Pro 2021 is for the same crowd as the previous models: those without a budget who want the absolute best tablet on the market, as well as professionals and enthusiasts using intensive apps for content creation or editing. Unless Apple changes direction and turns the iPad Pro into a true laptop replacement, the market for this tablet will remain limited.

The iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2021) has the best hardware I have ever seen on a tablet, but the software lacks the versatility to really make this a true MacBook replacement. It’s expensive too and the price jump from the previous model makes it even more of an investment. If you want the best tablet, with the best screen and the best performance then go for this. But for everyone else the iPad Air 4 is probably still a better buy.

Ultimately, Apple’s latest iPad Pro feels like a flex. It’s a showcase of the versatility of the M1 chip – how it can power desktops, notebooks, and even tablets that are just 6.4mm thick. And as fantastic as this new iPad Pro is, the Mac user in me cannot help but be excited for Macs. If Apple can get its M1 chip to run so fluidly in a form factor that’s this compact think about the possibilities for Macs. This new iPad Pro is great but it's a sign that the future of Macs could be even greater.

For those of you that bought themselves a Magic Keyboard and an Apple Pencil 2, you will be happy to know that the iPad Pro (2021) will support them fully. You can still use the trackpad as a mouse pointer, the Pencil 2 still attaches magnetically and charges from the iPad. The iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) specifically will be a bit tighter fit in an older version of the Magic Keyboard — that's because the new tablet is 0.5 mm thicker than last year's edition. Not a huge deal (not as huge as it was made on Twitter), but I would still be cautious about the keys leaving marks on the iPad's screen due to the tight fit (ahem, MacBook Pro...). There were no new accessories announced, but it's worth mentioning that — yes — the iPad Pro (2021) comes with a USB Type-C port.

The Galaxy Tab S7+ is a good choice if your priority is having a nice display or a free stylus, and you don't mind switching to Android. It is still among the best Android tablets out there, with its beautiful 12.4-inch AMOLED display, similarly smooth 120Hz refresh rate and excellent performance. It is also a more appropriate tablet for watching movies, as it's a wider-screen one, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is taller and better for productivity. If you want a more affordable, but still modern iPad instead, there's nothing better than the 2020 iPad Air 4. It only has an 11-inch variant and isn't nearly as powerful, but iPadOS 14 flies on it regardless. Slightly thicker bezels, no Face ID (has Touch ID instead), not as impressive a display, but it's still arguably the greatest midrange tablet to get right now.

Without doubt or any argument this iPad Pro is the best, most impressive iPad Apple has ever built, and that there’s enough potential and room in this iPad to future-proof it for at least a few generations. If one is into the latest and newest technological advancements, this iPad pro is must buy for them irrespective of its price! And if these new specs and advancements are not making a great difference to your technological needs then the earlier iPad versions are the best.

As this iPad Pro 2021 (12.9-inch) review shows, Apple's leaps forward in performance and display quality make the iPad Pro more true to its name than ever before. Previously, the iPad Pro was the best iPad there was for anyone who wanted more than the entry-level iPad 2020, with its notable limitations.

Apple incorporates the best, fastest and most delicious hardware in its new professional tablet. We have never seen this standard of performance or image quality on an iPad - but it is very expensive, and we're starting to wonder why we have to wait for the corresponding progress on the MacBook range.

Apple's new iPad Pro borrows the M1 chip from it's new iMacs and MacBook Pros, and the has a mini-LED based on the pro XDR display. That's a lot of features to pack into a tablet, and it let's you use the iPad Pro for some serious work, especially when it comes to photos and videos. But All that hardware comes with a heck of a cost, as much as $2,500 with accessories, and all that hardware prowess feels hampered by iOS, which is still not a desktop-class operating system.

Hands down this is the most stunning display we’ve ever seen on a display of this size. The iPad Pro 12.9″ brings all the glorious Mini-LED goodness from TV land and parks it square into something you can enjoy on the go. This device further blurs the line between a tablet and MacBook Pro, especially since both are now powered by the amazing M1 chip. Rather than selling you something similar though, the iPad Pro is in a class of its own and waiting for you to give it a shot.

After years of subtle iteration -- and, in a sense, actually listening to iPad Pro users -- Apple has finally hit an inflection point with the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2021). This is the first tablet the tech giant has released that I feel I could relatively comfortably use as my daily device for both work and casual use.

And if Apple actually brings over Mac apps and makes iPadOS more capable? Then I’d argue it’s a better buy than a laptop. For me, if I can run Final Cut Pro and open apps in floating resizable windows on this machine, it’d immediately replace my MacBook Pro with an iPad Pro as my main work machine.

For newcomers wanting the very best tablet – one that marries immediacy, performance and versatility – we’ve no hesitation in recommending this iPad. If you’ve a pre-2018 iPad Pro, now’s the time to upgrade. If you’ve last year’s model, hang on for another year, unless you’ve money to burn, live at the bleeding edge, or hanker after that revamped display. Best avoid looking at the last of those, though, otherwise you will want one.

The iPad Air (2020) is the big one here, though. Its 10.9-inch screen is a great size, the A14 processor is extremely fast of its own accord, it supports Apple Pencil 2 and has a great design with cool colours. Compared to the iPad Pro, the main downsides are that the screen is 60Hz and only hits 500 nits of brightness, and it features less fancy speakers. Here's our full iPad Air (2020) review – for most people, this is probably still the most sensible iPad to buy, even if the iPad Pro is better.

This iPad continues the Pro's transition to laptop - and is the closest replacement experience to date. The hardware is now there, the only holdback is the software situation.

And that's the thing about the iPad Pro: The 2021 version of the hardware is beautiful, perhaps perfected (except for that camera placement) and expensive. And I can't say what Apple's software plans will really do with it. How unleashed the new Pro becomes factors into how much you might want it. Or need it. But at the moment it's a very, very pleasant sports car of a tablet indeed.

It’s easy to take for granted, but the hardware in this tablet really is amazing: Face ID, dual rear cameras that are quite good and paired with LiDAR, quad speakers with superb sound and decent volume, excellent microphones, support for the Apple Pencil, the best screen you can get on a portable device, and on and on.

There’s no question that this is the best, most impressive iPad Apple has ever built, and that there’s enough horsepower here to future-proof this thing for at least a few generations. If you want a front-row seat to the future of the iPad experience, or if you just don’t mind shelling out beaucoup bucks for nice things, go for it! And if that’s that not you, don’t sweat it — the iPad Air is still the best iPad for most people. No matter where your tastes lie, though, do me a favor: wait until Apple shows off everything it has at WWDC and then make your decision.

Just when you were wondering what Apple could possibly do to improve the already excellent iPad Pro we see the company’s M1 processor has been added to the latest models to make them even more powerful and convenient. An iPad Pro customer is usually someone pretty savvy who want to get a lot of work done on the move and be creative and collaborative at any moment when inspiration strikes. And it’s different proposition to using a MacBook because the iPad Pro offers a hand-on touchscreen experience so it’s not a case of being a laptop replacement but a laptop alternative.

Oh, and before you go, just in case you're curious, the most expensive 12.9in iPad Pro (2TB with 5G) will set you back an eye-watering £2,149. Add a £349 Magic Keyboard cover into the mix, and you might want to think about re-mortgaging.
