The iPhone 11 Pro is Apple's most powerful 2019 phone that comes in a one-hand-friendly size. It has a triple-lens camera to capture best-in-class photos and video from a variety of perspectives, a new night mode to enhance low-light photography and extra battery life prowess. Even if the design hasn't changed, this is the camera and battery upgrade iPhone users have been after.

The Max pushes everything up a notch, with the great display and new camera being the highlights, while the lack of 5G is a future consideration. All in all, the telephoto lens is useful on the 11 Pro, but I didn't miss having it when I used the 11. If I needed to zoom in on a photo, a 2x crop of a photo I took with the main camera worked fine. I do recommend looking at the photos you have on your current phone and see how many were taken zoomed in and how many photos would look better had you been able to zoom in a bit. If you have a lot of pictures where you wished you had a dedicated telephoto camera, then you should consider an iPhone 11 Pro.

Between the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, it may be difficult to figure out which one you should get. Both phones have the same processor, same main, ultrawide and selfie cameras, and run iOS 13. On one hand, the iPhone 11 represents one of the best values for a flagship phone you can buy today, and has many of the same 11 Pro features. On the other hand, the iPhone 11 Pro has a few key additions that make it the best iPhone ever made. At $999 (£1,049, AU$1,749), it also starts at $300 more than the iPhone 11.

If you have an iPhone XR, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max are both worthy upgrades. The situation is a little less clear with the iPhone XS and XS Max because these two phones are still very powerful phones with excellent displays, cameras, and video recording capabilities. My recommendation would be to upgrade from iPhone XS and XS Max only if Night Mode is important to you. The extra performance, support for Wi-Fi 6, higher durability are all nice, but Night Mode is the single biggest and most enticing new feature for me. The only other reasons why you might want a Pro iPhone is if you prefer the sizes (the iPhone 11 is the smallest in the lineup and the iPhone 11 Pro Max is the largest) or if you need the 512GB of internal storage.

Deep Fusion could be something transformative down the line, but for now, it’s hard to measure its ability truly. Apple likes to hype its newest features, yet fails to add context to why they work well in certain scenarios. The good news is that the sum of this camera’s parts is a noticeable step forward. It’s still a game of catch-up for engineers in Cupertino, but a first-place finish is within sight if they push to help people capture images they’ve never seen before.

The Pro models, on the other hand, I feel are proper and worthwhile generational upgrades. Users coming from an iPhone 8 (Plus) or earlier models can now upgrade to the new Pro models without having to worry about taking a hit to battery life. Meanwhile performance is self-explanatory, and the camera upgrades are very solid, albeit the wide-angle has some definite weaknesses. Still, the phones feel like very strong devices which notably improve upon the fundamentals, showing that even 12 years after the first iPhone, Apple is still capable of delivering meaningful upgrades to their high-end smartphones.

After some of the gut-wrenching price tags from Apple over the years, the 11 has a pretty decent price-point of under ₹70,000. But don’t think of this model as Apple’s ‘budget 11 series model’; it still packs a punch. The Pro and the under-mentioned Pro Max are the burlier siblings, offering a more immersive experience for filmmakers and gamers if Arcade’s caught their eye. But if we’re getting into universal gaming on its own, the OnePlus 7 and the ASUS ROG Phone II have pushed the envelope here.

Overall, Apple has done what it has done for the past few years, which is to make a marginally quicker, slicker phone. The camera is a big selling point, but when you think A) about how many wide-angle and telephoto pictures you’ll actually take, and B) how other manufacturers make devices that compete across the board for far cheaper prices, you start to wonder how much more Apple can get away with it – especially with decisions such as the one to offer the 11 Pro with 64GB for more than £1,000, which is just downright cheeky.

While the iPhone 11 Pro looks nearly identical to its predecessor, the changes Apple has made do make it a much better phone. The three cameras on the back are truly excellent and might just be my favourite trio of sensors on any phone. The video recording, audio and super-bright XDR display are all tremendous too. This is also the first 5.8-inch iPhone that doesn’t feel hamstrung by a battery that needs constant attention to get it through a full day. All that being said, there are still areas I would have liked to see Apple push forward in, especially as it has now decided to call these phones ‘Pro’. 5G was never going to happen, but would have been nice anyway; some sort of TouchID-enabled fingerprint sensor inside the display and the rumoured reverse wireless charging that could have juiced up a pair of AirPods would all have been welcome features.

On paper, the iPhone camera hardware isn’t impressive. In fact, it features regular-size sensors and relatively small apertures when compared with competitors. Yet, Apple has worked hard to make the best of it, and the result is very good, as you’re about to see. The main change that explains the better low-light performance and lower average noise is the higher Maximum ISO (from 2304 to 3072) of the primary camera. The telephoto camera benefits from the same kind of improvements, along with a larger aperture.

There are three reasons why Apple calls its more expensive iPhones the "Pro" iPhones: the luxurious stainless steel frame, the sharper and more colorful display, and the telephoto camera which is great for portraits. If you can live with a beautiful but slightly less vivid and slightly less sharp screen, and you don't lust after luxury or a telephoto camera for portraits, the iPhone 11 is a much more sensible and affordable choice.

At the same time, it doesn’t really break any new ground. It does everything the iPhone XS does better, and it adds features Android phones have flaunted for awhile (Night mode and ultrawide cameras), but it’s hardly the revolution the iPhone X was, and still doesn’t have any 5G capabilities. It’s difficult to recommend over the basic, non-Pro iPhone 11, which is very nearly as good and costs a third less. If Apple is going to continue the Pro branding and drastic price gap, it needs to do more to justify them both.

The iPhone 11 Pro is one of the last great small phones in existence. And that's no small feat when you consider all of the great stuff Apple packed into this phone. You get arguably the best cameras in a phone along with class-leading performance and an OLED display that outshines most Android phones.

They’re the best iPhones so far, unsurprisingly. They’re also the most cohesive: Apple’s features give context to the hardware changes, like the talents of its custom chipsets, in a way that tells a story rather than just looks impressive on a spec sheet. Those who take photography seriously, or who have serious demands from their phone’s battery, should be first in line.

It's the best iPhone ever, of course, but how could it be anything else? But it's also better than it looks, and better than Apple's own announcements seemed to let on. I'm reminded of the Ship of Theseus, which asks: if you replace every beam and bolt of a ship with a new one, is it still the same ship? The iPhone 11 Pro looks so similar to its predecessor, but almost every single part has been switched out for something new and better. The screen is brighter, the camera is far better, the speaker is improved, the wireless is faster, the battery is bigger, the processor is more powerful… the individual changes don't feel that big, but the sum makes for a really solid year-on-year upgrade. This is absolutely a new, shinier ship. It does come at a very high price, though. We'd expect the iPhone 11 to be the more popular model by a long way, because it strikes a superb balance of features to price. But if you want the very best technology that you can get in an iPhone, you won't feel short-changed here.

Along with the better battery life, the key improvement is all about the camera. It's now a triple-lens configuration, adding a wide-angle sensor to the main lens and the 2x zoom lens. But it's not just the addition of a lens, because they should all be better. In fact, the three lenses should work together to produce a better picture. All three lenses can record 4K 60fps video too.

The iPhone 11 Pro is the most powerful phone on the market, but doesn't bring a huge swathe of changes - the camera is far more adept at photo and video, and the increased speeds mean gaming is far more impressive. However, there's not a lot different visually, so perhaps users will be swayed by the cheaper iPhone 11.

The iPhone 11 series, with its wide-angle camera, gives a completely new take on what smartphone photography can achieve. Even as its cameras in general get better, it seems to be way ahead of competition when it comes to how the camera fuses with the powerful processor to do what other phones cannot. Some of this is magic, and hence is not really in the realm of realism, as we see with night mode where the images are way better than what the human eye can see. As this union of sensor and processor progresses and as the AI learns more about the kind of photos that are being clicked we will see the results get better, with more details and subtleties which are otherwise smudged on smartphone cameras.

The iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max are currently up for pre-order, with retail availability set to begin on September 20. Apple offers the devices with 64 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB of onboard storage. I highly recommend that you budget an extra $150 to quadruple to storage of the entry-level models. Going from 256 GB to 512 GB, on the other hand, will cost you $200 extra.

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max offer the best that Apple is capable of right now, but we're still left with an important question: Do you actually need everything on offer here? Certain changes, like improved battery life and the more flexible triple cameras, are updates everyone can enjoy. For almost everything else, though, the differences in actual day-to-day use can be so subtle that you'd be hard-pressed to really notice them.

It’s clever, but there’s no way for reviewers to repeat and verify that test. So the best I can tell you is that Apple has historically been good about meeting its battery life claims, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max I’ve been using every day for a week has consistently run for 12 to 14 hours on a single charge, with over 10 hours of screen-on time reported in the battery settings per 24-hour period.

Whether or not the iPhone 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max is worth it for you will depend on what smartphone you're currently using, as well as how important iOS is to you. This decision is complicated by the fact that the iPhone 11, Apple's successor to the iPhone XR, is nearly as good as the Pro series, with its only notable missing feature being a telephoto lens and its LCD display. With all that said, even with a few shortcomings, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are set to go down as two of the best smartphones of the year. The iPhone 11 Pro starts at $1,379 CAD for 64GB variant, $1,589 for the 256GB model and the 512GB variant costs $1,859. Meanwhile, the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $1519 for the 64GB version. The 256GB costs $1,729 and lastly the $512GB is a whopping $1,999.

There are numerous other improvements that I won’t get into here, such as improved water and dust resistance, longer battery lives, support for Wi-Fi 6, faster Face ID, and that new U1 chip. That’ll have to wait for the full review. As it is, the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max look like really solid phones even if there aren't exactly groundbreaking.

With its new finish the iPhone 11 Pro looks suitably stylish and even the camera bump, which had been feared to be ugly, looks much better in the flesh. If the photos its trio of cameras delivers are anywhere near as awesome as the ones Apple showed off during the unveiling, the 11 Pro could give Huawei and Google a serious run for their money.

Apple really is going all out on the camera here, hoping that the additions of a third camera lens and a better screen to enjoy it will convince those that believe they are Pro users to jump on board. At the moment, you could argue this is a camera that also happens to be a phone. In fact, Apple's keynote at the event didn't even mention the iPhone could also make calls or send messages (it can). Ultimately, though, from what we've seen this is Apple using 2019 as a refining and honing process, which will lay the groundwork for future Pro devices to become even more powerful. That's what we've seen with the iPad Pro range, and its worked well, so expect to see the same here for the iPhone 11 Pro, too.
