Yes, but don’t expect it to meet all your needs if you’re a power user. The iPhone SE (2022) has the performance and lastability of more expensive iPhone models and is the smallest, most portable iPhone you can buy, but the screen is as small as the battery capacity.

The iPhone SE 2022 is both a roaring success and a missed opportunity. Internally, this dinky phone makes a strong proposition with top-drawer performance and years of software updates ahead of it. It’s just a shame the same old design and tiny display is hard to get excited about.

The updates Apple made to the iPhone SE bring it current with modern tech in terms of performance and 5G connectivity thanks, in part, to the A15 Bionic. It's a phone that runs iOS 16 right now and will continue to receive iOS updates for the next several years. Apple has fine-tuned the recipe that is the iPhone SE, improving upon a phone that was already a steal. Whether you're managing a fleet of workers who you need to equip with an iPhone, or you're simply someone who likes smaller iPhones, the iPhone SE is an easy choice. You simply can't find a better phone at this price.

If you’re happy with an Android, there are countless options available that will give you significantly better value for money, without relying on ageing parts to shave a few dollars off the bottom line. So then the iPhone SE really only makes sense for buyers who simply have to have an iPhone, but can’t afford the step up to the 12 Mini – or won’t give up on Touch ID just yet. If that’s you, then the iPhone SE will serve you well so long as you can stomach the dinky display, retro aesthetic and camera limitations – but I promise you, you don’t know what you’re missing.

If you look around, you’d be hard-pressed to find much that rivals the iPhone SE’s build quality, performance, and features for the same kind of money. Sure, they might have larger displays and comparable or even slightly better camera systems, but the iPhone SE main attraction is that it gets you into the Apple ecosystem and all the benefits that it confers at an attractive price. The 128GB edition could be the most ideal candidate to ensure you have a reasonable amount of storage without spending too much from our point of view. In fact, a comparable Galaxy S21 FE phone with 128GB storage is over S$100 more, further sealing the iPhone SE's proposition. Ultimately, the iPhone SE might not be the iPhone you want, but it’s the iPhone you need. I know it’s a tired old cliche, but in this case, it’s very true. If you're ready to make the jump using no-contract, SIM-only plans, Apple's online store is where you can check out the choices and colours before making a purchase. Alternatively, you can also consider getting it via Amazon.

The Apple iPhone SE (2022) remains the most affordable way to get iOS in your pocket. However, it suffers from a severe lack of innovation. Its iPhone 8-copy design was beginning to feel dated with the iPhone SE (2020), and two extra years have not been kind to the thick bezels or the single camera. The blazing-fast A15 Bionic chip gives this small iPhone the engine to run with the best devices on the market, but the cramped, low-resolution display and meager base storage holds it back like a pair of training wheels. If you desperately want an iPhone that won’t hurt your wallet too much, the iPhone SE (2022) is for you. It will receive software updates for a long time, and 5G support gives it a degree of futureproofing. Touch ID is still nice, too, though it’s perhaps not enough of a reason to put this one in your pocket. Apple’s lone rear camera offers good results as usual, but it comes stripped of now-common features. The budget phone market was different when the last iPhone SE dropped in 2020. Now, Google and Samsung have raised their game to an entirely new level, and aside from raw power, Apple isn’t keeping up. You’re bound to find better value down several other avenues, but it will mean parting ways with the comfort of iOS.

For some, the iPhone SE (2022) is the ideal smartphone as it’s compact, powerful, and affordable. Those are some seriously desirable qualities. Plus, when you add in Apple’s excellent build quality, long-term software support, and what is still a sleek design, the little phone makes a great deal of sense. It’s just not a phone for power users. The battery doesn’t have the stamina to match the processing power, and the camera (although acceptable) is basic. Furthermore, the small screen size and 60Hz refresh rate don’t make it a multimedia superstar either. If you’re not worried about these aspects and choose wisely with the storage capacity, the iPhone SE (2022) is good value — and ideal for those who long for a powerful phone that can be comfortably held and used with one hand.

This makes the iPhone SE simply way too expensive to be worth it, especially considering that the only real upgrade you’re getting here is the Apple A15 Bionic chip which you can’t even use to the fullest due to the hamstrung display and the crippled camera setup that the iPhone SE has. Even its 5G capabilities, something Apple highlighted a lot in its marketing material, can’t be used in Malaysia at the time being. It’s also worth mentioning that while the iPhone SE may be the cheapest iPhone available right now, the price balloons significantly if you plan to get more storage onboard. And considering that the base model has just a pathetic 64GB of storage on it, you’ll probably have to end up getting the higher spec options anyway. But at RM2,799 for the iPhone SE with 256GB of storage, you could be getting one of the plethora of Android flagships with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip under the hood for nearly the same performance, with better hardware everywhere else on the device too. Typically, the saving grace that the iPhone has is its great software support, where you can expect around five to six years of iOS...

The Apple iPhone SE (2022) display showed a strong performance overall in our tests. Unlike the other models in Apple’s series of iPhones which come with OLED displays, the Apple iPhone SE (2022) screen is an LCD, and it is the best one we’ve tested so far, outperforming all other LCDs phones in our database in all use cases. For a high-end phone with a standard 60 Hz refresh rate, we thought the device was great for gaming because of its good smoothness, great touch accuracy, and well-managed aliasing. The device came very close to achieving a top score in the touch attribute. The display also rendered color very well overall, making it ideal for viewing photos mainly in an indoor environment. Where we saw a few limitations was in the display’s video performance, mainly because HDR content lacked brightness and contrast.

With a DXOMARK Camera score of 118, the Apple iPhone SE (2022) does well in its segment and has made significant improvements over its predecessor the iPhone SE (2020). But the lack of ultra wide and tele cameras on the 2022 version means it cannot quite keep up with the best-in-class Google Pixel 6. When capturing still images, exposure is good in bright light and under typical indoor conditions, but images shot in low light are often underexposed. The autofocus performs well and is quite fast, thanks to zero-shutter-lag technology. A wide depth of field means background subjects are rendered sharp. Color rendering is accurate, with fairly neutral white balance. On the downside, the texture/noise trade-off is fairly low. Images lack fine detail, and luminance noise and low-frequency chroma noise are often noticeable. Our testers occasionally also found artifacts, such as ringing, ghosting and color fringing. This graph shows that the iPhone SE is capable of capturing good detail when mounted on a tripod in bright light and indoors.

The Apple iPhone SE (2022)’s battery has a very small capacity of 2018 mAh, the smallest we’ve tested so far. The size had a significant impact on the autonomy and its score, which placed it near the bottom of our entire database. The iPhone SE (2022) offered only 1.5 days of autonomy in moderate usage, struggling a lot in all our test cases, whether in default mode or calibrated mode. The iPhone SE (2022) took 51 minutes to charge 80% of the battery capacity with its 20W official charger, which is slower than the average. But even at 20W, the charging power never exceeded 16W during our test. The device features wireless charging, but takes a good 3 hours and 11 minutes to fully charge the battery. Whether wired or wireless, the charge efficiency was very low. But when it comes to discharge currents, the iPhone SE (2022) showed outstanding results. During almost all our test cases, the discharge currents were very low, showing that the device is very well-managed. Compared with other devices in the High-end segment ($400 – $599), the device ranks at the bottom of the list, mainly because of its autonomy

The $429 iPhone SE (2022) is a phone that straddles the future and the past. The A15 Bionic chip inside this phone delivers flagship power for hundreds less than the iPhone 13. And the image quality is mostly excellent despite being limited to a single rear camera. I just wish Apple found a way to include a proper Night mode. And yet the design of the new iPhone SE looks like a throwback with its small 4.7-inch display and huge bezels around the display; the iPhone 13 mini shows that you can cram a larger 5.4-inch display into a small phone, but it costs $699. If you're not insistent on buying an iPhone and living in the Apple ecosystem, the Google Pixel 5a is arguably a better bet, offering a larger 6.34-inch display, Night mode and considerably longer battery life for $449. But it's also not nearly as fast as the new iPhone SE. However, the Pixel 6a is due to launch in July, which might give the new SE some more competition with its Tensor chip and dual camera system. Overall, the iPhone SE (2022) mostly succeeds in terms of providing a great value.

There's also the iPhone XR, which still sells for less, and the iPhone 11 which sells for a bit more. Both have been discounted heavily during sales, and you can get bank offers and exchange bonuses too. They have the same larger screen, plus Face ID, and will feel more modern. Battery life should be better, and the iPhone 11 even has an ultra-wide-angle camera, but they're also both quite bulky. Everything else is comparable – the IP rating, glass-and-metal-bodies, and iOS support. We've also seen the iPhone 12 mini on sale for less than what the new iPhone SE (2022) costs, so if you want a phone that's modern and still compact, that's another great option. And that doesn't even begin to cover all the fantastically capable Android models you can currently buy for around Rs. 40,000 – check out the ones we've reviewed that have stood out here. Even if you specifically want an iPhone, you have multiple options. Apple is famous for high prices, leaving some buyers more frustrated than delighted.

The iPhone SE offers plenty of power, but I'm not sure why - it's the main area the last SE didn't need an upgrade. Few will want to use all that performance to drive bleeding-edge mobile games on such a dinky screen, or use it for demanding multi-tasking. Even the camera can’t take full advantage, with Apple arbitrarily restricting access to features like night mode and cinematic mode to drive demand for its more expensive options. But, along with wireless charging, the A15 chip is really all the iPhone SE has going for it in the larger mid-range market – Android rivals at this price now offer similar software support, keep up with it on water-proofing, and surpass the SE on display quality, design, and camera performance.

For one, the tiny, dated screen is only going to be a bigger problem as time goes on. You might like the idea of it or be used to it from an older phone, but the simple fact is apps are starting to expect extra vertical space this phone just doesn’t have. TikTok already feels like a cramped and uncomfortable experience, and this problem will only ever build on itself. Although Apple is in it for the long haul when it comes to updates, 64GB of storage won’t cut it over time, and I strongly recommend getting at least the 128GB model, which means spending $480. If you’re platform agnostic or just want to see what using an iPhone is like these days, this is still a good phone at a good price, whose few drawbacks can be dismissed with a little planning (and a little extra money). We don’t usually speak directly to iPhone owners here at Android Police, but if you’ve been hanging onto an iPhone 8 or earlier waiting for an inexpensive long-haul phone, or you’re simply a fan of the older design with the front-facing fingerprint sensor, the new 5G iPhone SE is the phone to get.

At Rs 43,900 for the base model with 64GB on-board storage, the iPhone SE 2022 is a compelling smartphone to get into the Apple ecosystem. It is, however, not the one to experience the best of Apple and its ecosystem. That said, the iPhone SE 2022 is strictly for people with a liking for compact form factor. The Apple iPhone SE 2022 is not a modern-looking smartphone, but it has the build quality, camera & performance of Apple, which we have enjoyed over the years. Despite the small size, it packs all the essential features. Still, a handful of people, who thinks more about utility will prefer this phone. Or the ones who want an iPhone on a budget. Well, if you have a much higher budget and want the latest features, must go for iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 Pro max. But if you are old school & want something at a lower cost, you shall consider iPhone 13 mini. The 13 mini is indeed in a considerably higher price segment, but it has much better looks & features than SE (2022).

If you’re an Android fan that feels like an iPhone is an inferior device, then clearly, no, don’t buy one. This is a genuine plus to the iOS system where, if you play by Apple’s rules, you’ll get a phone that is easy to set up, easy to use and just works. Having used the iPhone SE for a couple of weeks now, it feels less of an “it will do” device and more like a targeted device on lower mid-range users who just want their phone to work. The iPhone SE is, by Apple standards, a cheap phone that has a place in the market. It’s Apple’s “first phone” for users who aren’t necessarily keen on higher-end technology, but as discussed, it fits in the same price range as some pretty solid Android options. Like it or not, the iPhone is well marketed and has some massive advantages over Android. But the combination of cost and the “walled garden” created around data is, for many, a barrier to purchase.

The iPhone SE (2022) offers a lot to like if you're a fan of compact form factor smartphones. It is a phone that promises good battery life, and also brings with it the promise of powerful performance for pretty much anything you do on the device. To top it off, it also offers a pretty good point-and-shoot camera experience with its single-lens camera set-up at the back. And the most important thing is it does all of this despite being the most affordable current-gen iPhone from the company. However, it may still not be the phone for everyone. And the reasons are obvious. The lack of an expansive display, the outdated design, and average low-light camera performance are all reasons to ignore the iPhone SE (2022) in favour of something from the world of Android. But, that's only if you are comfortable going down that path.

Of course, it looks retro, and it has a small display of low resolution and slow refresh with huge black bezels. There's only a single camera on the back and one that hasn't had a sensor or lens update since 2017 - hence the lack of Night Mode. So this really is a phone for two groups of people. The first one wants the cheapest entry into the iOS ecosystem. The second are those looking for a powerful compact phone with the same requirement of spending as little as possible. If you fall in either of those the iPhone SE (2022) will perform reliably enough so you won't regret getting it. In any other case you should either stretch you budget to an iPhone 12 mini or explore the endless Android market instead.

The Apple iPhone SE (2022) is the brand’s least expensive iPhone model on offer, and it delivers an audio performance that is on par with its predecessor, the iPhone SE (2020). Whether it is playback or recording, audio from this high-end 2022 phone is relatively free of artifacts. Playback was particularly good at maximum volume when compared with other devices. Sound dynamics were good, especially when gaming and watching movies. But the audio performance really stood out in the recording, with consistent results in each use case. Proper tonal balance of voices resulted in great audio in life and selfie video; microphone occlusions from finger movements near the microphones were well managed and had only a minor impact on voice recording.

The iPhone SE — despite the ‘dated’ design and ‘high’ price’ offers great value. No, it doesn’t have the flashy display and fancy camera specs that a lot of Android phones offer in this price range and less. But still, it offers great value simply because it is an iPhone and there’s a certain level of quality that is associated with Apple. That’s why millions of people continue to buy iPhones and Apple continues to make billions because of the iPhone. Every product in the Apple lineup is designed to serve a purpose and the iPhone SE is no different. So you can keep pining for the iPhone SE to cost lower or hang on to the “if onlys” — if only it was under Rs 30,000 or if only it had a better display — but Apple has made the iPhone SE (2022) to offer an affordable iPhone for those who seek certain things and not all the things in a smartphone. And the iPhone SE does those certain things extremely well and much better than most phones in this price range. And that’s why it is great value for those who want an iPhone with a great processor but don’t want to splash the cash.

Apple may have cultivated a brand image by championing the art of storytelling, but nobody talks about how its products — no matter which device you choose, at any price point — offer a singular experience. The new iPhone SE (2022), although half the price of the iPhone 13, does not give an impression that you are using a low-cost iPhone. This is a fundamentally different attitude from the other brands, whose smartphones are designed ‘on purpose’ to feel different depending on how they are priced. Sure, the iPhone SE may not have the same extra specs as the iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 Pro Max but it has its own character that covers every facet of the unique iPhone experience that too at no extra cost.

Should you buy the iPhone SE 3rd Gen? If you know the compromises you are making with this one, go ahead and buy it; you will be surprised by what it can do. The 2022 iPhone SE 3rd Gen is a solid smartphone overall with nice cameras, sublime user experience, and a decent battery life. And don’t forget at least 6 years of OS updates (the original 2016 iPhone SE also runs on iOS 15.4). If you seek more, spend extra and get the iPhone 12.

Since Apple moved to a bigger screen from 4 inches, there have been no bad iPhones. The iPhone SE 2022 too is a good phone. It is an extremely fast phone with a good -- but small -- screen and a slick design. Its camera system doesn't have many tricks, but it is a capable camera system, particularly in good light. The question then is: should you get the iPhone SE 2022? I feel the dated design, relatively smaller screen and lack of some camera features like the ability to shoot ultra-wide photos or night mode, limit the appeal of the iPhone SE 2022. They also make the phone slightly overpriced at Rs 43,900. Essentially, the iPhone SE 2022 is for people who don't want to get into a mess called high-end Android -- and it is a mess right now -- but at the same time, also don't want to spend Rs 60,000 or Rs 70,000 on an iPhone. If you too are someone looking to get a fast and future-proof iPhone at the lowest possible price, you can't go wrong with the iPhone SE 2022.

Yes. At just over $400, the third-gen iPhone SE is a phone that likely won’t give you buyer’s remorse. It does feel small with dated bezels and an older display, though. But considering you’ll still pay $499 for a two-year-old iPhone 11 with an older chip from Apple, this is a good buy based on processing power alone. But if you’re coming from an iPhone with an OLED panel and the Home button-less design (i.e., any model since the iPhone X), it might be best to save up for a modern iPhone.

So, it's time for a wrap-up. The iPhone SE has finally been updated after two years, but there is not much excitement around. The update doesn't fix the big issues with this old design, but instead kind of renovates and speeds up a form factor that already looked out of date two years ago. Yes, you get 5G connectivity, a super fast processor and very slightly improved camera, but it's the fundamentals that matter and they haven't changed. The iPhone SE 3 feels like a "deja vu", and in a certain way, it seems that Apple wasted the world’s most powerful chip and kind of trapped it in an outdated design. From the older screen technology and design, to the still unimpressive battery life, this is definitely not a phone that we can recommend to most enthusiasts out there. So who is it for? Clearly, it's for those who are nostalgic and those who don't want to change from the familiar "iPhone with button" design (we know one former president who liked that). If you just want a simple and compact iPhone and the cheapest one at that, well... this is the one!

The iPhone SE 2022 is both a roaring success and a missed opportunity. Internally, this dinky phone makes a strong proposition with top-drawer performance and years of software updates ahead of it. It’s just a shame the same old design and tiny display is hard to get excited about.

As was the case in 2016 and 2020, the iPhone SE is your cheapest admission ticket to Apple's ecosystem: iCloud, iMessage, App Store, Apple TV Plus, Apple Music, FaceTime. At $429, I think it's worth the price and is an incredible value for what you get. I wish that Apple had kept the 2020 iPhone SE in its roster as an even cheaper way to get an iPhone, but this new iPhone SE still packs lots of modern features and will likely get more from iOS updates in years to come.

If you have an older, small, 3G iPhone that will become obsolete once the carriers turn off 3G, the new SE is the gentlest transition. If you just want to get the least expensive new iPhone, this one works fine now and for the foreseeable future. Similarly, if you're experiencing serious network congestion on your existing iPhone (with lots of service bars, but puzzlingly slow speeds), the 5G support here helps. But as the mobile network guy, I have to point out that the 2022 iPhone SE has the worst network performance of all of the 5G iPhones. And even if you don't care about network performance, the lack of a camera Night mode puts the iPhone SE behind even less-expensive Motorola phones in some ways. Ultimately, the iPhone 13 remains our Editors' Choice winner for the majority of iPhone buyers, with the best mix of features and performance for the price. But that price starts at $799. For around half that amount, the 2022 iPhone SE is a suitable alternative if you don't use your phone heavily—it's simply not as compelling as its predecessor was when it launched.

Apple’s 2022 refresh of their most affordable iPhone, the iPhone SE 3rd Gen, starts at $429. It’s the iPhone for budget-conscious shoppers who prefer smaller phones or those who prefer Touch ID to Face ID. It sports an A15 processor just like the more expensive iPhone 13 models and it has sub6 5G. The design is similar to the last gen 2020 model, with a Touch ID button on the front, 4.7” LCD display with P3 color gamut and glass backs in your choice of black, white or Product Red. The base SE has 64GB storage and it’s also available with 128GB and 256GB storage. It supports 20 watt wired charging and Qi wireless charging, but not MagSafe wireless charging.

As with most Apple products, there are plenty of things the Apple iPhone SE (2022) does well. Its camera is great, the display looks lovely (as long as you’re not bothered by the slow 60Hz refresh rate) and the high levels of performance the A15 Bionic processor delivers will ensure the phone will still perform well long after the battery has given up the ghost. However, it’s becoming increasingly hard to justify recommending a phone that looks so dated and one that delivers such mediocre battery life. If you really can’t stretch to an iPhone 13 mini and just can’t face moving away from the Apple ecosystem, then at £419 the iPhone SE (2022) is your only choice – unless you don’t mind buying secondhand or reconditioned. However, it’s very hard to get enthused about it this time around.

In short, the new iPhone SE (2022) seems a bit out of place in India. Its design feels recycled and there's no real “wow” moment that you might expect when using an expensive new device. It's priced way beyond the budget segment and will have to compete not only with Android heavyweights but also multiple other iPhone models. I do have a lot of questions about how the new iPhone SE (2022) works and who it really makes sense for. The iPhone SE is one of the best bargains in modern smartphones. It is not the flashiest or most feature-rich but it offers more bang for buck for longer than any other. It has an almost vintage design, lacks the MagSafe charging and accessory system, Face ID and other niceties of Apple’s more expensive models, but is otherwise a solid phone. At £419 it is Apple’s cheapest model, competing with mid-range devices from Samsung and myriad Chinese phone companies, many of which offer bigger, better screens, more cameras and greater storage. But unlike its rivals, it has Apple’s top chip, 5G, the latest version of iOS and will, crucially, be supported for a very long time with software and security updates – it should be safe to use for seven years or more. When even the best competition at this price tops out at only four years of updates, the iPhone SE will last longer than any other mid-range phone. And because it is an iPhone, it benefits from a huge ecosystem of third-party accessories, plus you can get it fixed if you break it and the battery can be replaced when it wears out.

That's $20 less than you'd pay to replace an iPhone 13 mini battery, but I'd still suggest it's worth cross-shopping for those who want to stick in the Apple ecosystem. Yes, the cheapest iPhone 13 mini (with 128GB of storage) is $220 more than the iPhone SE 128GB, but you get a bigger, nicer OLED screen, an ultra-wide camera, proper MagSafe, mmWave 5G support, and better battery life. They're benefits worth considering. If you're feeling platform-flexible, meanwhile, a Pixel 5a with 5G starts at $449, has dual rear cameras, a considerably bigger screen, and Google's latest computational photography which is definitely impressive. On the flip side, it doesn't feel as nice as the iPhone SE, there's no wireless charging, and you'll have to be okay with Android. The iOS fan on a budget but unwilling to consider a refurbished iPhone, then, should probably stick to the 64GB or 128GB versions of the new iPhone SE. Anything more expensive, and the delta in price between that and the iPhone 13 mini is too little for it not to be worth taking the leap.

The $429 iPhone SE 2022 is a phone that straddles the future and the past. Overall, the iPhone SE 2022 mostly succeeds in terms of providing a great value. But next time I'd like to see a design that better matches the cutting edge vibe of the internals.

The iPhone SE 2022 is ideal for a specific consumer: a budget-conscious homebody seeking a portable, powerful, unpretentious phone. Emphasis on homebody because the iPhone SE 2022’s battery life pales in comparison to other higher-priced iPhones, so on-the-go busy bees need to temper their expectations as to how long they can remain untethered with the new SE. On top of that, nightlife lovers may frown at the SE’s Night Mode deficiency. Plus, exchanging contact information with new friends you meet while socializing becomes damn-near impossible while your phone is dead. If you don’t mind going the Android route, the Samsung Galaxy A52 is less than $400 and lasts more than 10 hours. Still, this pocket-friendly powerhouse is a good buy for anyone who puts blisteringly fast chips, incredibly useful mobile OS features and portability at the top of their list.

The iPhone SE (2022) continues Apple's run of delivering cutting-edge innards for a cut-price iPhone. The camera is alarmingly good in most circumstances, and the A15 chip will make sure this phone gets updates for years to come. While the small size will be welcome for many, it also means a screen that will be too small for others, and it limits the battery life.

I have read enough articles, internet forum posts and spoken to enough people in real life to know these groups exist, particularly in North America, where “iMessage lock-in” is a thing. There’s also a group of individuals who are absolutely used to the physical home button on an iPhone, and want to resist change for as long as they have options. There are people who will never consider an Android, even if they’re on a tight budget. For them, an iPhone at $430 is very appealing. And to them, the iPhone SE 3 makes sense.

The iPhone SE 2022 is a strange phone. In many ways, it’s very ambitious, especially when it comes to daylight camera performance and general speed. I also appreciate that this will be a phone that’s updated through software for years to come and I really believe that’s an important skill Android devices at this price mostly ignore. But if you’re hoping for a fresh take on the SE’s design or a larger option then you’re going to be disappointed. The screen is small and cramped in a way the iPhone 13 Mini avoids and the design just feels a bit dated.

Apple could've gone all-out with the iPhone SE. A bigger, better display; a new aesthetic; all the flavors of wireless connectivity. Problem is, then it would've inevitably lost the primary reason the smartphone has been such a perennial success across its three generations: value for money. I suspect that, for most iPhone SE buyers, the fact that they can be pretty much guaranteed to get half a decade or more of iOS updates on the same device, and yet spend under $500, is more important than having a long list of other features. And, if they really do need the cutting-edge in photography (not that the new iPhone SE's camera is bad, for that matter, even if you don't get an ultrawide-angle or telephoto lens) then there's the iPhone 13 for them to consider. My suspicion is that this is the last time Apple will roll out this particular recipe for the iPhone SE. When the fourth-generation model arrives — which, if the Cupertino company sticks to its past cadence, will be in about two years time — I'd be very surprised if it kept the same screen size.

Lack of a refreshed design aside, the iPhone SE is a solid Apple device that’s totally fine for your average consumer. It might sound a bit odd, but I’d compare the iPhone SE to vanilla ice cream. Smartphone and tech enthusiasts will likely scoff at it for not having as many sprinkles and toppings as a more expensive device — or to continue the analogy — “an ice cream sundae” would have. The iPhone SE may have thicker bezels, a smaller-sized screen, and lesser storage space, but I don’t think the iPhone SE was made for the tech-obsessed “sundae lovers.” It’s made for people who could care less about tech or what processor a device has. The iPhone SE is a smartphone for someone who doesn’t want to upgrade every year, but rather every four years. It’s the smartphone to buy if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, but still need something that’s reliable, durable, and will get software updates for many years to come. It's a superb smartphone with a good-enough battery life, loud speakers, and a decent camera. I say there’s nothing wrong with vanilla ice cream.

To summarizing the reviews, all the reviewer’s praised the phone’s snappy performance. With both 5G and the A15 Bionic chip, it’s as fast as a lower-end phone can get currently. Given Apple’s track record, they will likely offer updates to the phone for the next five years, if not more. But it’s obviously a phone with some limitations, especially if you are downgrading from a more expensive phone. Perhaps you like the small size or want TouchID again, but that downgrade will highlight the phone’s shortcomings. If you’ve never used an iPhone, or are upgrading from an older SE model, you’ll probably be quite happy with it.

The Apple iPhone SE (2022) is a tricky one for us. There is no doubt this is a very powerful device, and in terms of performance, it is excellent in our experience. You also get 5G and a number of features from the iPhone 13 models, like Photographic Styles and Smart HDR 4, making it very compelling as an upgrade model for those on a lower budget. Where we find ourselves conflicted is that the design and display haven't really moved on in 5 years. While there will be some who will like the familiarity when upgrading, we would have liked to have seen just a few changes in the third gen SE model to freshen it up, even if this was just the inclusion of MagSafe, or a slight reduction to the bezels. Touch ID is still an excellent technology though, the iPhone SE (2022)'s camera does a great job of working with what it has, even though we'd like to have seen Night mode, and battery and performance are both great - the latter especially.

iPhone SE is much of the same, then — and that’s to be expected. But as usual, Apple’s improvements hit its most affordable handset where it needs them most. It’s faster than ever before — as fast as iPhone 13 and faster than even newer Android flagships — with 5G connectivity. Even its camera, despite using the same hardware as the previous model (as far as we can tell), is better as a result of A15’s improved image processing. And yet, despite all of that, battery life is slightly better — although not amazing — than in earlier 4.7-inch iPhone models. “If you know in your heart of hearts you won’t mind a small screen for at least the next few years, and you just want a reasonably priced device that gets you through your day without any trouble, then this is the iPhone for you,” concludes The Verge. “On its own, the iPhone SE is a compelling choice simply because it’s so different from other budget phones,” said Mashable. “It’s tailor-made for people that want a small, simple, powerful phone with Apple’s trademark quality, that they won’t have to replace too often.”

For the price, the iPhone SE offers many advanced features, like a premium processor, 5G support and iOS 15. With these, Apple’s mid-range phone is likely to keep running respectably for at least two more years. But some of its other aspects are practically ancient, like its cramped screen and limited camera setup. If you’re hellbent on getting an iPhone for under $500, and don’t want a refurbished version of previous flagships, the iPhone SE is good enough. Plus, this is the only iPhone around that still has Touch ID, which many people prefer over Face ID. Those who want superior cameras and displays, though, should at least consider the Galaxy A52 or the iPhone 13. If you can wait a little longer and don’t mind Android, there’s also a chance Google’s next mid-range Pixel will be a better deal. For now, it’s nice to see a new iPhone SE that brings modern performance and connectivity in a design that fans of smaller phones will enjoy. It’s basic, but it gets the job done.

The iPhone SE is, arguably, just as important as the iPhone 13 to Apple's smartphone portfolio. And the updates Apple made to the iPhone SE bring it current with modern tech in terms of performance and 5G connectivity thanks, in part, to the A15 Bionic. It's a phone that runs iOS 15 right now and will continue to receive iOS updates for the next several years. Apple has fine-tuned the recipe that is the iPhone SE, improving upon a phone that was already a steal. Whether you're managing a fleet of workers who you need to equip with an iPhone, or you're simply someone who likes smaller iPhones, the iPhone SE is an easy choice. It's powerful and snaps surprisingly stellar photos, while still offering a design iPhone users still using earlier versions of the smartphone will likely continue to appreciate. It also has a reasonable price tag that steeply undercuts the rest of Apple's smartphone lineup, making the 3rd-gen iPhone SE's lack of modern features a little easier to swallow. Apple obviously has data that indicates there's a market out there for the SE, or the tech giant wouldn't continue to release minor refreshes in the line every few years.

Aside from the single camera, the 2020 iPhone SE’s biggest flaw was perhaps its woeful battery life. Packing a measly 1,821mAh cell, it managed just 11hrs 35mins in our fairly undemanding video rundown test, but the good news is that Apple has promised a big boost to battery life this time around, although this was a particularly vague statement at the phone’s launch. With these changes, Apple has inflated the price slightly, but it’s still pretty cheap. Of course, the word “cheap” is always a bit of a leap for anything that comes off Apple's production line, but starting at £419, the new iPhone SE finds itself in mid-range territory. This makes for a phone that’s priced closely to the OnePlus Nord 2, Moto G200 and the now-discontinued Pixel 4a 5G. It’s available to preorder from 11 March with a release date scheduled for 18 March. We’ll be reviewing the iPhone SE (2022) in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for our final verdict very soon.

So... the iPhone SE has finally received a much needed fresh coat of paint, 5G connectivity, faster processor and an improved camera, but it hasn't changed its proverbial colors. It retains the familiar "iPhone with button" design that would please one former president. Put simply: it's a classic that Apple sticks around with. It doesn't address the bigger issues with this design: the sub-par battery life in particular, but it also doesn't pretend to be a power-user phone where those features might be more relevant. If you just want a simple and compact budget iPhone, well... you can't go wrong with this one! But if you hoped for something a bit more modern, you'd better get ready to spend more or look at the competition, or at Apple's pricier models that is.
