I’ve tried a few gaming laptops over the years and generally arrive at the same core issue: you give up too much performance for not enough portability. However, Asus’ ROG Flow Z13 2-in-1 is a gaming laptop I wouldn’t mind carrying around. While likely not everyone agrees, for me, I find it a tough tradeoff to make. Generally, I want my laptops to be as portable as possible — thin, light, small, etc. I expect lower performance accordingly, but that’s okay since I make up for it with a large, bulky desktop with tons of performance for when I need it. Gaming laptops tend to walk a fine line of being technically portable while also managing to be obnoxious to carry around. They’re big, heavy, loud, and the battery dies if you spend more than an hour away from an outlet. They tend to be covered in gaudy RGB, giant fan grilles and sport weird designs. None of these things are explicitly bad, but I don’t look for them on a laptop.

The Asus ROG Flow Z13 does a lot of things right, but its form factor also brings a lot of practical limitations. No other tablet out there offers such high performance. If you've ever wanted a machine that goes from a "Halo" machine to a legitimate productivity horse, and finally evolves into a video-watching tablet, this Asus machine should be on your radar. I particularly loved the fact that I can simply prop the tablet half on a table or my lap, and breeze past a few races in "Forza Horizon 5" with an Xbox controller without having to care about the keyboard. Plus, unlike a traditional gaming laptop with bottom-firing heat vents that can quickly make it hard to keep it in one's lap, the Asus ROG Flow doesn't offer any such thermal discomfort. If you're concerned about raw performance, know that this machine can handle even the most demanding workflow. Overall, the Asus ROG Flow Z13 is a one-of-its-kind machine that is a jack of many trades, and won't leave you wanting for a lot more. That is if you are willing to pay for all those conveniences and are willing to ignore other more reasonable options.

Despite having a wide array of gaming notebooks under its belt, ASUS is not shying away from innovation and the Flow Z13 is a testament to the same. In my books, the 2-in-1, gaming tablet is a home run for ASUS and for a first-gen product, the device has undoubtedly made its mark in the gaming space. It is undeniably one of the most unique computing products on the market today and the device is flush with high-end hardware, including the latest Intel 12th-gen H-series processors, DDR5 memory and even discrete GPU options from Nvidia. Despite that, the device is but a slightly chunkier Surface Pro and it’s mind-boggling to think of all the hardware that is crammed inside the machine. Be that as it may, the form factor is questionable for gaming and it isn’t entirely practical either. The experience just doesn’t compare to a regular clamshell or 2-in-1 convertible laptop. The only benefit of the form factor though is that you get better (if not the best) cooling as all the core components are on the top and get an uninterrupted supply of airflow.

Cramming components that you would normally expect to find inside a big and bulky gaming laptop into a relatively svelte 13-inch Windows tablet makes the ROG Flow Z13 nothing short of an engineering marvel. I love being able to just turn on the Z13, pair a controller and get straight to gaming without having the keyboard get in the way. It’s also nice to have the option of plugging in a beefy external GPU when I want that extra performance. However, the Z13 compromises battery life to get there, falling notably short compared to other detachable notebooks and gaming laptops. The biggest issue with the Z13 is one of price. The discrete RTX 3050Ti graphics model of the Z13 retails for $3499 and ASUS’s external GPU accessory adds another $1699 to the total. The reality is that the 3050Ti graphics chip doesn’t deliver the performance that PC gamers expect at this price. Springing for the eGPU accessory adds bulk, weight and cost to the equation that makes choosing a similarly powerful gaming laptop a less complicated and less expensive choice.

No, you shouldn’t buy the Z13, and that’s unfortunate. The Z13 is still highly experimental and far from a device I want to recommend. Yes, it has a clever design, a bright 13.4-inch display, excellent performance, and a decent keyboard. But then the overall execution leaves one wanting. The core issue is that the Z13 tries too hard to fit in both worlds. The Z13 isn’t as powerful as a dedicated gaming laptop that pro-gamers would want. Nor is it small and light as a tablet. And yes, the cost of owning the complete package–if one includes the XG Mobile GPU– makes it way more expensive than capable and powerful gaming laptops on the market.

At the end of the day, the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 feels a bit like a hard sell. On one hand, the gaming tablet cum laptop clearly takes inspiration from Microsoft’s own Surface lineup, even going so far as to offer some really top-notch hardware, both above and beneath the hood. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel that this piece of electronic decadence isn’t quite everyone’s cup of tea. As I said at the start of this review, the Z13 is a product that caters to a very, very niche market for consumers that probably want bragging rights about owning what can only be described as one of the world’s only gaming tablet, and the fact that it is more than capable of serving the role of both a tablet and notebook, wherever and whenever the need arises. That, and the fact that they don’t mind lugging around an additional 1kg in the form of the XG Mobile, in the event that they need a little pick-me-up in the graphics department.

The Z13 comes in a couple of fixed configurations, some harder to find than others. We tested the $1,900 model with an Intel Core i9-12900H, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti and 1,920 x 1,200 display; our evaluation unit came with the XG Mobile external GPU (with an RTX 3080), but I could only find the eGPU bundled with the $3,300 model equipped with a 4K display. There's also a $1,700 model incorporating a Core i7-12700H and RTX 3050 and theoretically an i5-12500H model with only integrated graphics, both of which have the 1200p screen.

ASUS really managed to create a truly gaming tablet in an original design, with a very cool screen, a top-end processor, a decent graphics card, which, among other things, can be upgraded with an external graphics card. With performance that’s truly unmatched by tablet standards, ROG Flow Z13 will appeal not only to gamers, but also to content makers and anyone who needs a powerful yet mobile device. And, of course, it is impossible not to note the complete set: it has everything just out of the box, from a bag-case to a stylus and a mouse. The Z13 format gives a lot of freedom in its use. Work on it with your fingers or a stylus as on a standard tablet, if you like; connect a keyboard and mouse and get a laptop, if you wish;add a monitor and use it as a portable PC, if you want. Or even use it as a game console with a screen by connecting up to 4 controllers to it. The range of applications is really wide, everyone can find their optimal use case. However, this is not without some caveats. Given the format and gaming focus, it was not possible to achieve decent autonomy.

One thing is sure, you can find a lot more powerful devices than this one for far less money. However, this would be a safe choice. ASUS wants you to be bold. And we really encourage this. We think that this tech is part of the future of mobile computing. Having all of your components behind the display is easier on your hands and a better choice from a thermal standpoint. The reason for that is that heat goes upwards. Thus, by having your motherboard straight up, you make it easier for the convection. As a result, the thermal efficiency of the cooling system is improved. We can easily spend nights and days talking about this machine. What is more important is that it deserves to be talked about. We need to see more companies experiment with this form factor, but until this happens, we have to give credit to ASUS for going the extra mile, and once again outshining their competition with innovation.

Our review of the ROG Flow Z13 for the Philippines shows just how far ASUS has come in its pursuit of mobile tablet gaming. It’s one of the most powerful stand-alone PC-based tablets we’ve seen today and theoretically can play newer PC titles as long as you’re willing to turn the graphics down a bit. That being said, it’s not the ideal device to buy if you’re a PC gamer that wants to game on the road. It’s relatively expensive considering its discrete GPU, and the only way you’ll be able to get more than 40 frames per second on newer games on max quality is to spring for the spendy ROG XG Mobile external GPU for it.

The Asus ROG Flow Z13 takes the design of Microsoft’s Surface Pro, and gives it the power of a gaming PC. It’s an incredibly versatile device, allowing you to play games on the go, or leverage the power of a high-end PC with the optional external GPU. But the poor battery life limits its portability prowess and the sub-standard keyboard isn’t ideal for hardcore gamers, making it a gaming laptop with very niche appeal.

The Asus ROG Flow Z13 is something of a contradiction. It’s a mobile device that doesn’t have great battery life, and a gaming device that has slightly weak performance. It sits between the two worlds, trying to straddle both but not quite managing it. That doesn’t make it a failure, though. It has good gaming performance and acceptable battery life, but just not as good as a dedicated device. The price is the real Achilles heel here. For the $3400 that my fully-specced-out review model would cost, you could buy a decent gaming laptop and a low-end Surface Pro 8 to do some work on the road with. Is the extra worth it to buy one product that can do both? For most people, probably not. But if you have the scratch and want an all-in-one solution, it’s the one to beat.

Now all this doesn't mean you shouldn't get one. But you should know what you're getting into first. The Flow Z13 is a wildly interesting system, and for people looking for a portable and adaptable machine with big time performance, I'm glad that ASUS finally made a gaming tablet/detachable 2-in-1 into a real device after all these years. And while its high price will make the Z13 an incredibly hard sell for most people, I still think it’s impractically cool.

With the ROG Flow Z13, Asus dropped the convertible design of last year's Flow X13 in favor of a more modular, detachable design. This approach makes the Flow Z13 more useful as a tablet because you don't have the keyboard rotated around and lying on the back of the display when in tablet mode. It's less useful as a laptop, however, because the detachable keyboard is about as far from a gaming keyboard as you can get, RGB backlighting or no. The upgrade to RTX 3050 Ti graphics and a 12th-gen Core i9 processor make the Flow Z13 powerful for its size, but it remains a specialized product for users with specific needs. You'll need to have some deep pockets, too. But high-end tablets always come at a premium. A similarly configured Microsoft Surface Pro 8, for example, would cost nearly as much as the US$1,900 (AU$3,400) ROG Flow Z13 with a lesser CPU and merely integrated Intel graphics. In that light, the Flow Z13 represents a fair value if you want a Windows tablet that lets you dabble in some gaming when the workday is done.

The modular Asus ROG Flow gaming tablet just got more modular. Last year's ROG Flow X13 featured a convertible 2-in-1 design with a 360-degree hinge that let you rotate between laptop and tablet modes. The new ROG Flow Z13 ditches the display hinge and opts instead for a detachable keyboard that can act as both an ultraportable laptop with its kickstand kicked out and a tablet with the keyboard detached and not swung around and stuck to its back. In addition to tweaking the design, Asus also upgraded the internals. For the biggest upgrade, the ROG Flow Z13 swaps out the middling GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q GPU of the Flow X13 for RTX 3050 Ti graphics. This allows for greater gaming capability. And, should you reach for a AAA title that needs more muscle than the internal GPU can provide, the Z13 can connect to Asus's eGPU module, the XG Mobile. This device bumps the graphics up to Nvidia's potent GeForce RTX 3080.

The Asus ROG Flow Z13 is not going to be for everyone and we think they know that. This tablet is going to be for the people who are going to be willing to pay to get a front-row seat to the innovation of the Republic of Gamers team. You can get a higher specced gaming laptop with the price that they’re selling this tablet for but — as the tagline on the back of this device says — this is going to be “For Those Who Dare”. It is pretty exciting to see where they’re going to take this though and what the mad scientists in their R&D team have cooking for us next.

In our limited time with the ROG Flow Z13, the device proved itself as something from the future. I still can’t wrap my head around this device, how can we have something so small and portable be so powerful? I can use it as a full-fledged laptop, then turn it into my office/work device then immediately dock it to the XG Mobile to become a full-fledged gaming station. The ASUS ROG Flow Z13 is something that we never thought could exist, but it’s here and it’s amazing to say the least. This may be the beginning of something in the world of tech and ASUS may just be getting started, but for what it’s worth, it’s a helluva start.

For the whole package, you will be looking at an eye-watering RM15 999 hole in your wallet. The price really isn’t the main issue here, but the fact that you can’t take full advantage of the GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU with a 4K 60Hz display. For gamers, the FHD 120Hz display is definitely the better option. I really, really hope that ASUS Malaysia will reconsider selling the ROG XG Mobile separately, or at least offer it as an option to bundle it with a variant featuring a FHD 120Hz panel. It is really only because of this limitation that I can’t give the ROG Flow Z13 a Gold Pokdeward, as I know I just can’t buy the fantastic combo I tested here in Malaysia. So yeah, if you want a Gold Pokdeward, you know what to do, ASUS.

It sounds like a failure on Asus’ part that I can’t recommend the Flow Z13 to most people. But it’s far from a total failure as a product. It offers a glimpse of how awesome the future of portable gaming will be. And none of the laptops that I just recommended come close to being as thin or versatile as the Z13. With that in mind, this tablet is a reminder of how awesome the now of portable gaming is. And the Flow Z13 is a peak example of how Asus leads the industry by actually bringing concepts like these to life — price be damned. It’s a pretty good laptop, and with expectations in check, it’s a good gaming tablet, too.

The ROG Flow Z13 is quite a unique product, a powerful all-purpose computer in a compact 13-inch tablet form factor. In very few words, you can think of this one as a thicker, heavier, and more powerful Surface Pro, and given the popularity of that series, I can see this appealing to a fair segment of potential buyers. I for one have never been a major fan of tablet-like computers, as I prefer the superior ergonomics of a 2-in-1 convertible or the simplicity of a clamshell design, but I can nonetheless acknowledge at least two major advantages to this design of the Flow Z13: better cooling and a more comfortable daily-use experience, as you’ll rarely come in contact with the warmer parts of the chassis, as they end up tucked away on the back of the device. They’re both crucial aspects on this Z13, which packs more powerful hardware than any other 13-inch computer on the market in such a compact format. In fact, based on our tests, this is a more competent multi-purpose computer than a fully specced Dell XPS 15 or many mid-tier 14-inchers.

There are clear downsides though. 16GB of RAM is hardly inspiring for a device of this calibre. That will actually be a deal-breaker to many potential customers. ASUS insists on using a mediocre SSD even for a high-end, pricey device like this. The battery life is not very good and realistically will struggle with a working day of general usage. And, most annoyingly, the single USB Type-A port on the ROG Flow Z13 is USB 2.0 spec. That’s utterly ludicrous. I am actually struggling for the words to explain how ridiculous that is for a 2022 device. We will give ASUS credit for innovating with the ROG Flow Z13. But that innovation comes at a serious cost and really does present pricing as an issue, because the ROG Flow X13 AMD with its Ryzen 9 5900HS is £700 cheaper for the eGPU or non-eGPU solution. At £700 extra for the Intel-equipped ROG Flow Z13 edition, you have to put some serious weight on the truly tablet form factor here.

It's difficult to come to a single, simple conclusion about the Asus ROG Flow Z13. On one hand, a legitimate gaming tablet is a head-turning idea, and the Asus' design and execution are high-quality. Its gaming performance equals that of many entry-level gaming laptops, which is impressive given the Z13's relative thickness and size. And the eGPU hookup, often a headache, works fine. Ultimately, however, we have to ask if this solution is better than existing alternatives. The tablet on its own approaches premium gaming laptop pricing for entry-level gaming performance, while being thicker and heavier than productivity-focused tablets and relatively short on battery life. And while it's hard to resist the extra performance you get with the XG Mobile, the combination is super expensive, as much as $1,000 more than comparable gaming laptops. If you throw out price as a consideration entirely, it's a nifty setup, but we have a hard time recommending the tablet as a standalone gaming solution or justifying the additional price of the eGPU.

If you like the idea of Microsoft’s Surface Pro 8 but are put off by the integrated graphics on offer, the Asus ROG Flow Z13 may appeal to you. The impressive internals – including a top-end 12th-gen Core i9 processor and Nvidia’s RTX 3050 Ti – offer a decent gaming experience in a form factor closer to a standard tablet than a traditional gaming laptop, offering a more lightweight, portable design that’s easy to throw into a rucksack. The 13.4in Mini-LED display is much brighter than rivals, the design is intuitive and the form factor means it's versatile in use too. However, whether the RTX 3050 Ti performance will be good enough in a few years’ time is yet to be seen, and unlike some gaming laptops, the components can’t be upgraded. You do have the option to pick up the XG Mobile dock which brings not only RTX 380 power but more USB ports, display connectors and Ethernet connectivity for a more desktop-esque experience, but it’s a sizeable added cost on what is already a premium gaming device.

The ROG Flow Z13 is the most powerful all-purpose computer that you can get at this point in a compact 13-inch tablet form factor. Asus aced the design and screen options, didn't skimp on inputs, features, or the IO, and made sure the thermal design is perfectly capable of coping with the specs inside in demanding loads. On the other hand, the middling efficiency on battery with the Intel 12th gen hardware and the ergonomic particularities of the tablet format should also be considered in your decision, as a potential buyer.

In my time spent with the Flow Z13, I’ve tried using it for some of the functions that I normally used my iPad Air (my morning news and emails) and home laptop (doing actual work) for. It’s certainly not a replacement for either of them. For one, it’s too heavy to be my tablet replacement and secondly, the keyboard just can’t quite match up to normal laptop’s more stable keyboard. But I do see a gaming audience who wants something in between that can also play some of their favourite games at the same time.

The ROG Flow Z13 is expected in stores around Q1 2022 and from what I’ve been told, might start at under $1000 for the base models with the FHD+ screen and Iris Xe graphics only, and should match the Flow X13 convertible in price at the higher-tier configurations. The keyboard folio is included by default, and a compatible Asus pen will also be available as an extra option. The form factor is for sure an antagonizing point for this series, with advantages in performance/cooling over other ultra-compact products, but also disadvantages in practicality and ergonomics when not using this on a desk. Still, I do expect this Flow Z13 to be possibly the most powerful small-format computer of its generation, and for that reason a potential option to a handful of you, especially when you factor in the ROG XG Mobile compatibility and the ability to connect peripherals and eGPUs via Thunderbolt 4, which the Flow X13 2-in-1 series lacks. For what is worth, Asus are launching updated XG Mobile units this year, with either Nvidia or AMD graphics inside.
