Windows 8 Hybrid. Windows 8 makes it possible: the convertibles, a combination of a notebook and a tablet, are experiencing a Renaissance period. We are going to test the Dell XPS 12, which is equipped with an IPS display, and will show us if this fusion of technology can be successful.

While the i5 processor here has plenty of oomph for your typical programs, you can get the XPS 12 with a more powerful Core i7 CPU and 256GB SSD if desired. While the Dell packs a lot of punch into a tiny frame, expect to pay a premium. Our test unit retails for $1,599, but prices start at $1,299.

The Dell XPS 12 won’t match detachable laptop/tablets for their convenience or battery life due to its weight and thickness, but if you’re after a premium Ultrabook with tablet functionality built-in and don’t mind its lack of digitizer stylus, the XPS 12’s unique inner-bezel flip system works a treat looks super stylish. Throw in a Full HD IPS screen, excellent speakers, a great keyboard and flexible specs under the hood with good battery life, and this well-built machine is a recommended contender if you’re after a powerful Windows 8 convertible.

The tablet mode isn’t entirely successful, but the XPS 12 will definitely earn its keep as a powerful, lightweight Ultrabook that you can use for work on the road or in the office. The tablet mode is really just a nice bonus for when you want to have a bit of fun, or let the kids loose with apps such as FreshPaint.

The Dell XPS 12 is a solid performer with normal applications, and it can perform quite well even when faced with daunting multi-tasking. The unique flip screen form factor is complicated and probably that is the reason why nobody has attempted to imitate it. However, it does appear to be sturdy and should last long with normal usage. The bright 12.5" Full HD display is crisp and visible outdoors, and is also very responsive to touch input. It has most of the necessary ports except that there is no memory card slot or an HDMI port. A Display Port has been provided but that is not of much use, as we don't get too many display devices compatible with the same here. Providing an HDMI port or at least an adapter would have been better. While its dimensions are small, and Dell boasts of the carbon fibre body contributing to its light weight, it is not exactly as light at a little over 1.5 kg. Priced at Rs 95,000, the Dell XPS 12 is quite expensive, in fact Rs 5000 more than the Sony VAIO Duo 11, which performs a tad better. We would've have recommended Sony's device over the one from Dell, had it not come with a crammed keyboard or lacked a touchpad. We must say that most manufacturers have been pricing Windows 8 devices a little too steeply by simply adding a touchscreen as a novelty factor, when you can still use the device perfectly well with the keyboard and touchpad that it already comes with.

With the advent of Windows 8, convertible Ultrabooks are quickly becoming the new meme for notebook manufacturers. Some provide an acceptable platform while many struggle to carve out their own niche, but one thing binds them all together: Microsoft’s new operating system. With that in mind, Windows 8 allows Dell’s XPS 12 to shine and also drags the entire user experience downhill.

While the XPS 12 isn’t flawless, it’s a very interesting laptop nonetheless. To my knowledge, no one else is really trying this flipscreen approach; that’s either good news or bad news, depending on why most companies take an alternative route. If they’re doing it because making a good flipscreen is too challenging, costly, and/or prone to breakage that would be bad.

The Dell XPS 12 is an excellent PC rather than a laptop - used as your main home system, it's portable, quiet and feels like a luxury experience thanks to a great display and highly usable keyboard and responsive touchscreen. The tablet mode works but it's one of the heaviest tablets in the world so only suitable for sofa or desk use. Even without the tablet skill set, it's an admirable and powerful machine tied to the home.

The XPS 12's various problems are a shame as it does have other things going for it. The backlit keyboard is one of the best we've used - the large and responsive keys make typing a pleasure. The carbon fibre construction feels very robust. The XPS 12 is also fast. The dual core 1.9GHz Core i7 processor, 8GB of memory and the 256GB SSD make this a very fast computer.

We went into this review a little annoyed that Dell were pushing a 1.5KG tablet but considering the quality and value using the XPS 12 purely as an Ultrabook we’re happy to say that if you want a high-quality Ultrabook and you can cope with the ports and battery life, the Dell XPS 12 delivers a great Ultrabook experience and offers you some occasional tablet-mode fun too. It’s incredibly well put together both in terms of electronic design and industrial design. The only question that remains is – can you afford it?

Performance is in line with third generation Intel Core i5 and i7 Ultrabooks and the fast Samsung PM830 SSD drives are icing on the cake.

Dell has carried out the same excellence from the XPS 14 as far as design and build is concerned, with the Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook. The display flip is a very unique feature to have. Performance is fairly acceptable, but the cherry on the cake is the battery life. But like most of these convertibles, they work better as laptops than as tablets. None of that takes away from the fact that you are paying a premium for the entire package because of the form factor.

The Dell XPS 12 gets plenty right – it’s pretty, powerful and the Full HD display is excellent. However, despite all the hallmarks of an excellent Ultrabook, and tablet functions that work well, we can’t help fretting about the lifespan of those dainty little display hinges. There’s no doubt that it's up there with the finest Windows 8 hybrids money can buy, but if we had to make the choice, we’d put it just a whisker behind the tougher-feeling Lenovo Yoga 13.

The Dell XPS 12 is a good compromise between a tablet and an ultrabook, although it excels at being neither. Connections are a bit thin on the ground compared with a standard laptop and battery life is a bit tight for a tablet. On the other hand, it's much more powerful than a stand-alone tablet and the flip-and-fold screen makes multimedia activities feel faster and more intuitive than with the average notebook.

But while a 12.5-inch screen and a weight of 1.54kg might be fine for an Ultrabook, they’re a distinct liability in a tablet. You can’t hold the XPS 12 in one hand, which means that you have to prop it up on your knees or on a table in order to use it properly. Ultimately, this tablet mode isn’t intended for work―it’s for those off-duty moments when you can put your feet up and browse the Web or watch a few films.

There's no doubt some tweaks need to be made to the XPS 12 convertible's system in order to provide a smoother user experience under Windows 8, but the physical unit itself is great. It's a lot of fun to use, its screen is excellent, and it works very well as a tablet. The inclusion of a Core i7 CPU means it's one of the quickest tablet devices on the Australian market, too, and you can use it for serious work as a conventional notebook, in addition to tablet-centric tasks. Basically, you're getting a versatile system that's practical and well made, but it needs some software updates to iron out a few wrinkles before it will provide a completely pain-free user experience.

As a laptop, I have no real complaint with the XPS 12. But, tragically, it’s largely unusable as a tablet. This is a real problem given the $1,200 starting price tag. What at first might seem like a gimmick seems to be something of a double-edged sword. In fact, it's not a gimmick, the rotating screen has some very real uses, and even as a tablet it's perfectly usable, if a little heavy. And, if the price for the i7 is just too steep, then consider the i5 with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, it starts at £999, and is more than powerful enough for most people. For the best value, an extra £150 gets you a 256GB SSD and 8GB of ram with the i5.

With a starting price of Rs 94,990, the XPS 12 is one expensive notebook, even for an Ultrabook. While it does have a very good feature set, behind the fancy new rotating screen, it’s a very average performing notebook. The hybrid nature of the device is fun to use, but we’re sure that the novelty will wear off after a while. The Windows 8 store has still a long way to go in terms of Windows apps and until that happens, traditional desktop applications will still rule—and you don’t need a fancy touchscreen to use them.

Overall we are very impressed with the Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook. In terms of the design and functionality, it is actually quite unique. Dell have clearly pulled out all the stops in terms of the design of the XPS 12. The screen mechanism is very innovative and the quality of the materials used in construction are some of the best we have seen from a Dell machine. Even though the XPS 12 is a compact notebook, Dell have still managed to shoe-horn in an Intel i7-4500U processor – a fairly potent low voltage design. We are impressed with its performance in this system, even without a dedicated graphics card. It should provide more than enough power for the majority of users.

The Dell XPS 12 remains one of our favorite Windows 8 convertibles, even though the overall design hasn't changed. Sometimes it's best to not mess with a great thing. The 12.5" size is comfortable for ultra-portable travel yet it doesn't feel cramped like the MS Surface Pro 2 or 11.6" Ultrabooks and convertibles like the Dell XPS 11.

You can find small faults with the XPS, but it oozes quality. It provides a workable halfway house between compact Ultrabook and chunky tablet. We wonder how long the hinge mechanism will last under everyday use, but with soaring battery life and a gorgeous design, the Dell XPS 12 is better than ever.

Dell's 2013 edition may not seemed to have changed much on the outside but the new processor combined with an improved battery give this system some outstanding running times. Unfortunately, it still does not have any media card slots for use with flash memory and it stll is a bit heavy even though they did drop the weight slightly from the original model.

The XPS 12 isn’t all roses as its port offerings feel a bit lacking as well as its overall spongy keyboard, which we know is more of a personal preference. Its weight could also cause some concern if you plan on using the XPS 12 as a tablet more often than an ultrabook as tablets are known to be ultraportable mobile devices. The XPS 12 would be better suited to someone who wants an ultrabook who also wants the option of being able to use their notebook as a tablet every so often when they just want to do some couch surfing. If you’re looking for a Windows 8 tablet that can sometimes be used as an ultrabook, then you may want to take a look at the Microsoft Surface.

The XPS 12 has just two USB 3.0 ports, one of which is always on for charging devices such as a smartphone or a digital media player. A headset jack and a built-in dual-array mic sit next to the webcam for videoconferencing. The machine has no hardwired ethernet, but this is one of the few laptops we’ve seen to boast an integrated 802.11ac adapter (Intel’s dual-band Wireless-AC 7260, which also supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Intel’s wireless display technology).

Shoving a fourth-gen Intel Core processor into the XPS 12 greatly improved battery life and integrated graphics performance. The result is a convertible that can handle many tasks, but also break records for battery life. More than 13 hours in the light-load test is outstanding; even some Android tablets don’t last that long.

Dell's XPS 12 is a dual-purpose Ultrabook that performs very well as a tablet (albeit a heavy one). It build on last year's model by adding a fourth-generation Intel Core i7 CPU, and this has improved its battery life dramatically. However, it has a few issues that need sorting out before it can be considered one of the best convertible Ultrabooks on the market.

If you’re looking for a lightweight tablet then look elsewhere. The Dell XPS 12 is primarily intended as a powerful working laptop, and its fourth-generation Haswell processor provides performance and battery life that could justify its high price. The tablet mode isn’t entirely successful, but it’s a nice little bonus that you can use to relax when you finish work at the end of the day.

Compared to the competition, the Dell XPS 12 is much improved due to its 4th gen Intel Core processor. It's unique in the convertible ultrabook space, since it's the only one that flips its screen along its equator instead of a flipping or rotating hinge. The XPS 12 now lasts almost eight and a half hours on our battery test, which means you should be able to get a full workday out of the system before you need to find a plug. It's the kind of system you'd have to have some hands on time with if you're considering a purchase. Switching the screen over might come naturally to you, or it may ruin your day with a bout of frustration.

Has anyone completely nailed the hybrid middle ground between laptop and tablet? I wouldn't say so, but Dell's flip-screen XPS 12 at least makes for a more solid laptop than most of the detachable-screen models we've seen. The carbon fiber body gives it an upscale feel, and the new Intel CPUs take care of our main issue with its predecessor, battery life.

By far, though, the most impressive part was the quality of the display and the stylus. To say that drawing and writing on the XPS 12 was a pleasure is a complete understatement. The tablet provided one of the best digital drawing experiences I've ever had with a consumer tablet; this could absolutely be a digital artist's main drawing tablet, and I can't imagine they'd find a single thing to complain about. If you frequently take handwritten notes, as well, you'll love the XPS 12.

The killer blow for the XPS 12, though, is the sheer quality of the competition. If you have anywhere between $1,300 and $2,000 to spend then there are many other devices more worthy of your cash. Given that you can pick up the Core m3-powered Surface Pro 4 with the Type Cover for $1,549, I fear the XPS 12 is dead in the water. Sorry, Dell, but this time it’s back to the drawing board.
