As a luxury laptop to keep at home, however, few can beat the Dell. Fantastic benchmark results in 2D and 3D tests make this a gamer’s dream – but only if you can afford the hefty price.

One could argue that the mobile industry is a collection of compromises and different specialties. Although some notebooks try to be the “swiss-army knives” of the market and can do nearly everything, they are unable to truly excel in any one area. In stark contrast, the Dell XPS M1730 is like an expensive butcher’s knife. When used for anything other than its primary purpose, it is unable to excel. However, when used for its specialty there is nothing better and this knife can cut through anything. In this case, the XPS M1730 is an absolute powerhouse which thrives on taxing applications and demanding games. Given the weight, size, and battery-life of the system, the Dell is not an ideal candidate for carrying around and being productive on the go. However, for those looking for the performance of a flagship desktop in a form factor they can carry from one place to another it is hard to find a better candidate than the Dell XPS M1730.

Dell's high-end desktop replacement, the XPS M1730, has occupied a well-deserved spot on our A List for six months and, on the outside at least, this new model doesn't appear to have altered the winning formula. The familiar gun-metal texturing still covers the wrist-rest, there are still garish, coloured lights on the lid, and the two beefy speakers at the front of the thick base still pump out bright light as well as impressive sound. Fantastic performance and almost impeccable ergonomics, but the high price means its for gamers with deep pockets only.

The newest Dell XPS M1730 (Penryn) ($4,184 direct) is an awe-inspiring piece of technological splendor. A bold statement, yes, but one that's easily warranted by this masterfully designed gaming laptop, despite its size and heft. Weight is, in fact, this rig's only limitation, considering that gems like the Alienware Area-51 m15x are obliterating gaming benchmarks with lighter frames. The overall design of the Dell XPS M1730, which I reviewed last September, has not been touched, but now the laptop comes equipped with a Penryn-based Intel Extreme processor and a top-of-the-line SLI nVidia 8800M GTX configuration. The Dell XPS M1730 (Penryn) may demolish all of our 3D benchmark tests, but it's a little too one-dimensional to recommend for anything other than gaming.

With the basic spec starting off at around £1399/$1999 and rising to over £2600/$3800, the XPS M1730 is not a cheap machine. But its impressive specification and sturdy build help to make it reasonable value for money. A similarly configured Alienware laptop costs considerably more, despite the use of a generic Clevo chassis on 17in models and, in the UK at least, there are few manufacturers who can compete on price or quality. If you’re in the market for a gaming machine and size isn’t a factor, it’s difficult to recommend anything else.

If you're looking for a portable gaming rig, look no further. This is the machine you've been waiting for. Powerful and speedy, the Dell XPS M1730 will definitely take you places. As a desktop replacement, it has all the right components that will make a hardcore gamer's mouth water and it's definitely much easier to transport around than a desktop PC or even an SFF system, requiring no setup upon arrival (apart from the power adapter). When not in use as a gaming machine, the XPS M1730 functions well as an entertainment system with its ability to playback Blu-ray discs (if configured with the Blu-ray drive) at full 1080p resolution on its 17-inch glossy WUXGA screen. The lack of a built-in HDMI port is regrettable, but the DVI-to-HDMI cable makes up for it easily when you have the urge to watch your movies on your 42-inch LCD.

As gamers and enthusiasts, we have to say the M1730 pushes all the right buttons. Its combination of performance, custom lighting and useful features make it a wholly impressive machine with very few faults. We can nitpick here and there but Dell has done a fantastic job with the M1730. The only feature that really bothered us was the small touchpad, but its accuracy is excellent. We won’t complain about battery life, as that’s like buying a Ferrari and whining about its poor gas mileage. This is a notebook that goes on your desk and stays there.

Dell's XPS gaming laptop isn't exactly subtle. Vivid red light streams through dappled speaker surrounds, bright customisable panels highlight the XPS name in strident lettering, and a distinctive metallic pattern surrounds the keyboard. The gimmickry even extends to a built-in Logitech GamePanel: a small LCD screen fitted above the keyboard that displays CPU and RAM information. The final touch is the backlit keyboard and touchpad, allowing you to game long into the night. But with such a bombastic appearance, does the bite match its bark? First impressions are good. Dell's ambitious and quirky gaming laptop packs in a stunning set of features.

Easy gripes with the M1730 are its bulky dimensions and hefty 12lb weight, but that is the sacrifice you make for this level of performance and you're unlikely to find SLI in a more portable platform. In return for some of the extra weight, you get a highly durable magnesium chassis and a sturdy laptop lid. While the AC adapter has a quality look and feel, its sheer mass was hard to live with and combined with the weight of the M1730 in a laptop bag, things became a literal drag.
It shouldn't be a surprise that the Dell XPS M1730 is a very powerful system. Considering the price, it had better be. What was surprising is how mature Dell's mobile XPS system has become. While previous mobile XPS systems such as the M1710 felt like beefed up Inspirons with ground effects, the XPS M1730 is a complete gaming solution. Dell has obviously spent a considerable amount of time designing the M1730 from the ground up to be a mobile gaming dream system and they have succeeded.

Although you're paying a price nearing the £2,000 mark, you get a machine offering top performance in return. The Dell XPS M1730 is definitely for the more serious laptop users and gamers out there, and it would be a good desktop-replacement thanks to its cracking display. Although the Dell XPS M1730 is bulky and we are a little disheartened by the battery life we were wowed by the high games and WorldBench scores and impressive hard drive capacity.

If you have any passing interest in PC gaming then you’ll have found it impossible to ignore Dell’s XPS gaming range, as it’s the most powerful brand out there. There is still a great deal of controversy on whether a gaming notebook is a logical purchase, after all it’s simply not as upgradeable as a desktop. Then again, with the power on offer with the Dell XPS M1730 it’s easy to see those arguments start to fade. If there is an argument that serious gamers shouldn’t opt for a notebook, as it isn’t as versatile as a desktop PC, then the Dell XPS M1730 all but dismisses this line.
It’s as powerful as you need a gaming machine to be. This is a great machine that handles exceedingly well and is a genuine pleasure to use – just a little to heavy to use on your lap.

The XPS M1730 is Dell's new 17-inch high-performance gaming notebook, the replacement for the aging M1710. It is based on the latest Intel Santa Rosa platform and features cutting-edge Nvidia GeForce SLI graphics. A simple glance at the M1730 establishes that this notebook is not for those who do not want to show off. There is no other notebook like this on the market. For starters, the M1730 is absolutely enormous; its weight starts at 10.6 pounds and is two inches thick. Dell chose an intimidating design scheme for their flagship notebook. The visible exterior has a deep glossy black surface with a 'hydrographic' design pattern. The intricacy of the design can best be seen in a well-lit room. The back of the lid deserves special attention – two clear plastic windowed areas on the sides have a color background that is illuminated by the LED lights; our test unit has the Smoke Grey panels. The XPS M1730 is also available with Sapphire Blue, Crimson Blue, and Bone White. In the center of the lid is a large shiny Dell logo illuminated by a bright white LED backlight. The lid is an instant attention-grabber and the most visually striking part of the M1730 in this reviewer's opinion.

The latest revision to Dell's flagship line, the massive XPS M1730 features a redesigned case that combines familiar touches, such as flashing LEDs beneath the speaker grills, with newer elements, such as the integrated Logitech GamePanel LCD and 10-key numeric keypad. But, as with any gaming-oriented system, the most important features are inside the case. Like its predecessors, the XPS M1730 offers the highest-end components available--in the case of our review unit, a top-of-the-line Intel Core 2 Extreme processor, Nvidia SLI graphics, the first mobile PhysX processor, and two massive 7,200rpm hard drives. All that adds up to strong performance scores on our mobile benchmarks and chart-topping frame rates on our games tests--though a similar system with DirectX 9 graphics from Alienware did post higher scores on our F.E.A.R. benchmark.

Dell's XPS M1730 offers a lot of similar technologies compared to its Alienware sibling, but a few key component changes lead to a drastic performance difference in a few benchmarks. What happens when we average out all the benchmark sets? The XPS M1730 is only 4% faster on average than the Area-51 m9750, but its overclocking capability allows it to be pushed to a 9% final lead. This sets the pace for a bang-for-the-buck race! Our XPS M1730 came with a few options that raised its price to $4,656, compared to the Area-51 m9750 as-configured price of $4,409. That's only a few percent of a difference, but the average performance difference was also small.

Call it star alignment. Call it great timing. When Intel launched its mobile Extreme processor to coincide with nVidia's introduction of its mobile SLI GeForce 8700M GT graphics chipset, the stage was set for Dell to bring forth something sublime and mind-blowing. If there was ever a gaming laptop that will inspire its competition to do the same, it's the Dell XPS M1730 ($4,024 direct). The feel of gaming nirvana culminates as you feast your eyes on the tweakable 2.8-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo X7900 CPU, the nVidia SLI chipset, and something that has never been seen on a laptop—a built-in physics card from Ageia. But what about the pulsating Christmas lights that conjure up images of a nightclub? Well, the color-shifting LED lights are still intact, and there are even additional lighting effects under the keyboard and behind the lid. Awarding the M1730 an Editors' Choice is a no-brainer.

Boasting a new physics card and plenty of other perks for gamers, Dell's latest rig is fast, fun, and ready for the next generation of eye candy. Dell goes full-throttle with its latest XPS notebook, the M1730, which packs an Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900 processor, dual Nvidia graphics processors in an SLI configuration, and Ageia's PhysX controller, which theoretically makes games look more realistic than before. Although the whole experience is still a work in progress--we await better drivers and games optimized for Vista and all the high-end technology sitting inside the chassis--at $3,824, the XPS M1730 is ready for whatever you can throw at it, and then some. Our tested configuration features Smoke accents on the lid, but you can opt for Red, Blue, or White inserts instead. The cross-hatched gray top is more demure than some designs we've seen from Dell, though the lit lid accents still scream gaming rig, which isn't ideal for all users.
