The Pixel 9 Pro is an excellent choice for those who want Pixel-like camera prowess. Its compact form factor is the biggest highlight, and the good thing is that Google this year hasn't kept marquee features limited to 9 Pro XL. You get all the bells and whistles of the bigger sibling at a lesser price with the 9 Pro. The battery surprised me with its backup, and it shines in most scenarios. The extended software support should give prospective buyers confidence. The only downgrade is the lack of heavy-duty performance credentials, which you can experience only when gaming or editing videos or photos on the device. Long thing short, where the chipset is required to handle graphic-intensive tasks is where 9 Pro feels it remains behind the competition.

The Pixel 9 Pro is an outstanding choice for camera enthusiasts and users seeking a clean software experience. It offers impressive AI features, extended software support, and a distinctive design paired with excellent build quality. If you prioritize heavy performance and reliable battery life, though, you might want to reconsider before opting for the Pixel 9 Pro. We’d go as far as to say that if you can overlook the telephoto sensor and the better selfie camera on the Pixel 9 Pro, the Google Pixel 9 becomes a more practical choice. It offers nearly the same hardware capabilities while delivering the full Pixel experience at a significantly lower price.

Over the years, Google has figured out clever ways to differentiate its Pixel line from other phones in meaningful ways. Pixel-exclusive features like Call Screening, advanced spam detection, and Pixel VPN have been mainstays of the line for years, while new Pixel-exclusive features like Pixel Screenshots, Pixel Studio, and camera modes like Add Me are sure to make your friends and family jealous. However, there's an underlying upfront value problem that continues to grow. Pixel is once again $100 more than the previous year. Tensor is still slower than other competing processors and heats up more quickly than those, too. Google hasn't improved its display dimming rate as other companies have, and the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is problematic for some people, too.

In the Pixel 9 Pro, Google has created a phone that’s easy to handle and easy to use. It may not be riding high at the top of the benchmark charts, but that doesn’t really matter as it works smarter rather than harder. The latest version of Android brings a lot of AI with it, but it can be ignored most of the time, and when you do use it it can feel like magic. A flagship phone is a big investment, so props to Google for making something long-lasting as well as flashy.

Beyond that, you’re getting the same AI and Gemini capabilities across both the regular and Pro Pixels, the same software and the same version of Android. The real differences are in the hardware, and they’re minimal. A slightly brighter display with higher resolution and better dynamic refresh, a little extra RAM, and that’s it except for the telephoto lens and enhanced selfie camera. Having now used both the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro extensively, that telephoto lens is easily the biggest differentiator. So the decision really comes down to how much you think you’ll use that telephoto lens and whether that use will justify the extra $250 for the Pixel 9 Pro. Sure, there are the other hardware benefits, but you won’t notice them in day-to-day use (I certainly didn’t, and it’s my job to notice those things).

Apart from a smaller screen, the Google Pixel 9 Pro and Google Pixel 9 Pro XL share the same specs, including the same Tensor G4 processor. We tested the Google Pixel 9 Pro display, and as expected, the results were the same as those for Google Pixel 9 Pro XL. Overall, these two products had a very similar performance despite a different screen-to-body ratio and some slight differences in color rendering. The Google Pixel 9 Pro display also earned DXOMARK’s Eye Comfort Label.

Like I have said several times: the Pixel 9 Pro phones this year are the most exciting smartphones. There is a big reason for that: apart from the chipset, and up to an extent the speakers, Google has improved almost everything about its phones. All the complaints we would have otherwise now are manageable. Can the Pixel phones still be better? Absolutely. But they are finally good enough to be considered blue-blooded flagships. The Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro XL are absolutely solid phones. Then there is more: these are also the phones with arguably the best set of cameras for photography (but not video shooting) and the best suite of AI features. That counts for something.

If size isn’t a concern, the Pixel 9 Pro is a sensible choice for those who want more than the basics without paying the premium Pixel 9 Pro XL demands. Its 6.3-inch display also offers a much better viewing experience than the average 6.1-inch screen without feeling overwhelmingly big. Google deserves credit for improving the display brightness and biometric security. It’s also easier to recommend the Pixel 9 Pro over the 9 Pro XL if you’re choosing the latest Pixel iteration solely based on camera performance. The camera performance and related AI features between the two are identical. You can expect pleasing results in good lighting conditions, though there’s still room for improvement, especially for the telephoto camera.

The moment I got the Pixel 9 Pro out of the box, I was surprised by its size. The Pixel 9 Pro XL (which I recently reviewed, and you can check out the review here) was huge in comparison. The Pixel 9 Pro is compact and fits perfectly into any pocket—literally any pocket—and the good thing is that the screen doesn’t feel small at all. I wouldn’t call it a tiny phone like the iPhone 13 Mini, which featured a 5.4-inch screen with tiny bezels and a reduced notch. The Pixel 9 Pro, on the other hand, has a 6.3-inch, 120 Hz, LTPO OLED display with up to 3,000 nits of brightness. The display is super bright and fast, with only small bezels and a single camera cut-out.

Most people should opt for the standard Pixel 9, but if you're into photography, the Pixel 9 Pro series has a lot to offer. It captures my favorite smartphone photos yet, offering a more true-to-life balance that sits firmly between Samsung's intense saturation and Apple's increasingly inconsistent, out-there take on images and videos. This is in stark contrast to the various photo and video AI features offered by the Pixel 9 Pro series, including Zoom Enhance and Super Res Zoom Video, which I found particularly useful. That said, I'm still concerned about Reimagine's broader implications, given how easy it is to use and how convincing the results can be sometimes. Additionally, I haven't found a way to integrate Gemini into my life, despite its impressive capabilities. Overall, the Pixel 9 Pro line offers one of Google's most complete smartphone packages in years, but if you're not an avid photographer, you can save a few hundred dollars and stick with the standard Pixel 9.

I feel conflicted about the Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL. On the one hand, these are the first Pixels I've actually wanted to own. On the flip side, Google has included what feels like misguided software, going far beyond the already somewhat iffy sketch-to-image feature found in Samsung phones.

The best part of the Pixel 9 Pro is its size. I’m a fan of smaller phones, and I love that Google is finally giving us a choice if we want the Pro model without compromises. I’ve been reaching for the Pixel 9 Pro over my iPhone 15 Pro and even prefer it to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra simply due to how compact it is. Yes, but only if you can live with the combination of underwhelming battery life and slow charging. The Pixel 9 Pro is a great phone, but those two weaknesses will be dealbreakers for many people when a phone costs this much. It’s a shame, because the phone is brilliant in almost every other area. A premium design includes the best build quality we’ve ever seen on a Pixel yet, while a stunning display and top-tier cameras complement the experience perfectly. The 9 Pro also excels on the software side, with slick Android 14 and seven years of updates. Not all the AI features hit the mark, but those that do are impressive, and you can easily ignore the others (and at least they are available out of the box unlike Apple Intelligence). In many ways, the Pixel 9 Pro offers the no-compromise compact phone experience I’ve been craving. But those two big shortcomings mean I can’t fully recommend it.

The Pixel 9 Pro opens up a new niche for Google's hardware lineup - that of the compact flagship. We personally find that pretty exciting in itself. It also helps that the Pixel 9 Pro is a very well-rounded overall package. Its display, in particular, is excellent and near the top of our current charts when it comes to brightness. Build quality is solid; the same goes for audio and battery life. The camera setup is identical to that of the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which is a formidable accomplishment in itself. It does not mean it's flawless - just on the contrary. We were especially bummed by the inconsistent video quality, which was soft and mushy in one scene and sharp and crispy in the next. And just because AI can enhance photos now, that doesn't mean it should be used as a replacement for having the most advanced camera hardware possible.

The Pixel 9 Pro is a welcome arrival in the Pixel phone lineup and probably a sign that Google is confident in its smartphone range. While the company still has a long way to go in terms of market share, it has a level of control of its models that is only rivaled by Apple. The 9 Pro brings the same advanced features found in the big Pro XL to a more traditional and pocket-friendly form factor. Those features include not only the powerful telephoto camera and flagship display, but also things that are still gimmicky like the temperature sensor, and the almost forgotten UWB radio. It is a shame that market realities made the Pixel 9 Pro occupy the price range of the bigger Pixel 8 Pro, and not slot under a $900 price point. At $1000/€1100, the Google phone has to compete with much faster models from OnePlus, Xiaomi, Samsung, and others.

Should you decide to venture outside of Google’s ecosystem, it becomes a bit tougher to choose natural rivals for the Pixel 9 Pro. It’s configured closer to Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Plus ($1119.99 at Amazon), yet sized to match the base Galaxy S24 ($859.99 at Amazon). Personally, I’d rather have Google’s more natural cameras and more complete AI experience, but I’m sure that some will reach for the Galaxy S24 Plus with its larger 6.7-inch display and faster 45W wired charging at the same price. Both of Samsung’s smaller phones pack the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset, which might sway users, too, even though it won’t feel any quicker in day-to-day usage. And then there’s the iPhone — Google’s twin from another operating system.

We’ve long been impressed by the Pixel range of phones, and the Pixel 9 Pro continues with the good work done by its predecessors. Personally, I’m really pleased to see a small flagship phone which doesn’t make you compromise on camera features. This used to be something which Apple offered, and perhaps might be again when the new iPhone 16 Pro series is announced (not long to wait now). Sure, I enjoyed my time with the Pixel 8 Pro, but it wasn't my favorite device of 2023, nor did I find myself rushing back to it for any other reason than enjoying Google's software experience. That's not true of the Pixel 9 Pro. Perhaps it's thanks to the new design or the smaller form factor, but Google has crafted a device that I'm excited to pick up and use every morning. Google got a lot right with its new Pixel 9 lineup. It stepped up the build quality and design, now easily matching what we see from Samsung. The new design, while simple, is unerringly elegant and cohesive. These phones have the same fundamental flat glass slab design as the iPhone 15, Galaxy S24, and countless other phones, but they look distinctive and "Pixel-y" at a glance. The camera bar is a bit chunky, but it's centered and stable when you set your phone down. We also appreciate how well the Pixels fit in cases, which most people use on their phones. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is the more expensive of the phones at $1,100, which is a bit harder to justify now that the Pixel 9 Pro exists, unless you need/want its larger, beautiful display and slightly better battery life.

With the new Pixel phones launch, we were quite excited and happy to recommend the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro. Unlike the previous years, the company shifted its approach to bring a complete experience to the users. The leap in the performance aspect is worth noting. Besides, the battery life is something that we were expecting, while the camera aspect was phenomenal as usual. You can go with the Pro variant for additional telephoto lens support, while the non-Pro model is a value-for-money deal. But, it would be great if you also looked for an alternative. It's still too early to call the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL the best Android phone this year, but it's certainly up there for consideration -- even with its AI blunders. While the new model is Google's most expensive non-foldable phone yet, the price bump is justified by improvements in aspects that traditionally held the Pixel line back, such as charging speed, performance, and build quality. With the reintroduction of an XL model this year, the smaller Pixel 9 Pro should appeal to users who want a more comfortable device without compromising on specs and camera hardware. And if both phones are out of your budget, but you want the core features, consider the cheaper Pixel 9.

But the important thing is that behind all the flashy AI features, there’s a really good phone in the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pro XL. These are phones that I can finally hold up next to a Galaxy S24 Plus or an iPhone 15 Pro and think, yes, these are all top-of-the-line devices. These Pixels aren’t the budget-priced flagships that they used to be, and I think the higher prices are well justified by the hardware. Plus, when you’re getting seven years of OS updates, you can squeeze a whole lot of value out of your investment. And even as a small-phone enthusiast, the 9 Pro feels like a reasonable size to me. It’s not small, but it’s not gargantuan, either, and I deeply appreciate not having to sacrifice camera features by choosing it over the big one. Pixel image quality remains reliable, and the battery will keep up to the end of the day. Whether we’re ready or not, a new era of AI phones and photos is here, and it’s messy as hell. But the hardware — if not my faith in an AI-everything future — is solid.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro features a refined design, outstanding cameras, a stunning display, and reliable day-to-day performance. It serves as a good alternative to the Pixel 9 or the Pixel 9 Pro XL, with the compact size of the Pixel 9 but all the power of the Pro XL. So, if you're seeking a compact powerhouse with leading AI features, the Pixel 9 Pro is the model to get. That said, most people will be plenty satisfied with the standard Pixel 9, which offers less battery life and camera prowess, but also saves you $200, earning it our Editors' Choice award.

I'll be back next week with a more complete picture on the Pixel 9 Pro, but as it stands, I feel comfortable saying I love this phone. Moreover, I love this phone in a way I haven't felt with the last few Pixel releases. Nearly every aspect of this device feels properly polished like a $1,000 flagship should feel. And whether you believe in the future of Gemini, Google has managed to develop some thoughtful AI applications — you just need to ignore all the bad ones.

For the first time ever, Google is offering a Pixel Pro model in two sizes without compromise. That includes an incredible rear triple-camera system with 5x optical zoom telephoto camera, a bag of impressive new AI camera tricks, handy new Pixel-exclusive apps that rely on the power of Gemini, and a bold new design that some will love to hate. Unfortunately, a slower-than-ever Tensor processor and $100 price increase make this harder to recommend than I'd like, and a flaky new fingerprint sensor means finding the right screen protector is harder than it should be.

Although I’m not quite ready to assign a score – I’ll wait for benchmarking to become available and take more photos – I like the Pixel 9 Pro a lot. From a hardware perspective, it shines brightly. Even many of the AI features have their use; Add Me and Pixel Screenshots being the handiest so far. Gemini Live is flashy but doesn’t yet have the widespread app integration required to be a definitive virtual assistant. I’d also like Gemini to be more transparent and show its workings in answers unprompted so you can immediately read more about any given topic. As it currently stands, the Google Pixel 9 Pro is one of the most comprehensive blends of phone hardware and software to date.

Maybe. I’d only go for the Pixel 9 Pro if I wanted the latest and greatest, didn’t have last year’s model already, and was really intrigued by the new AI features. Otherwise, a Pixel 8 Pro will give very similar photo results for most situations.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro is a more compact flagship phone that delivers clever AI features, a super bright display and the longest battery life yet from a Pixel phone. However, the performance from the Tensor G4 chip could be better, and some of the AI features are a work in progress.

I would like to do an official review of Gemini Live after some time, and while this isn’t my official review of the Pixel 9 Pro XL, it’s definitely one of the highlights I’ve enjoyed with Google’s latest. So far, I haven’t really found any reason not to buy the Pixel 9 Pro XL other than if you prefer smaller phones, and if that’s you, you just have to wait for the Pixel 9 Pro. Either way, look for a final review of the Pixel 9 Pro XL in the coming weeks. But if you can’t wait until then, you won’t be disappointed spending $1,499 on the company’s latest and greatest.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro and Google Pixel 9 Pro XL are both fantastic pieces of hardware that I'll more than likely be using for the entirety of the coming year. Or for a bunch of years — each one of these Pixel 9 devices runs the latest version of Android and comes with a guarantee of OS software updates and security updates for a full 7 years. That's not just good for the value of the device while I'm using it — it means I could potentially use it for 3 years then sell it or hand it over to another person and they could continue getting updates for a further 3-4 years. I've not yet been disappointed by a Google Pixel smartphone in long-term use, over the course of a year or multiple years of standard everyday use.

The Pixel 9 Pro is here, and Pixel fans can rejoice at the premium new look and incredible feel. Google’s AI can be fun and even useful, if you don’t think too hard about it, with camera tricks that add you to photos and a live AI voice that you can converse with. Don’t make the Pixel 9 Pro think too hard, though, because the Google Tensor G4 chipset inside can barely keep up, leaving the next seven years of updates in question. But don’t worry about that for now; just have fun taking the best photos and videos, chatting to the AI, and peering into the future – the Pixel 9 Pro leaves you wondering what’s next.

And that’s my big problem: while it can be painted as consumer-friendly and expanding the level of choice, this splitting of the Pixel Pro into two handsets, to me, feels like subterfuge. The Pixel 9 Pro XL, which despite the new suffix is still very much the direct follow-up to last year’s Pixel 8 Pro, is more expensive than its predecessor, while the Pixel 9 Pro starts at the same price but has lower specs. Together, they produce an illusion of continuity but in reality, one charges the same for less and the other asks more for the same. Needless to say, this messy pricing structure hasn’t made the best first impression with me but that doesn’t mean that my mind is made up about the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. We’ll have full reviews coming very soon, so be sure to check back then to see if either handset can bring me around after this wobbly introduction.

It doesn’t look as good as the rest of the Pixel camera systems, but I don’t hate it either. I think they’re laid out like this so you can use the lenses at a better angle when using the camera in a folded state of the phone, similar to Samsung’s Flex Mode. Overall, this is the device I’m most excited about testing because, on the surface, it shows little compromise over choosing the regular Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL.

There is a lot still to test with the Pixel 9 Pro and we’ll go into detail in our coming full review. For now, though, we remain optimistic that Google may have made the most complete AI-powered handheld yet thanks to the actually useful AI that is melded with solid hardware.

In truth, the only question you should ask yourself when choosing the Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL is whether you want a larger or more compact device. The only differences between these phones are the size of the screen, battery capacity, charging speeds (as a result of the different battery sizes) and, above all, the price. So, if money isn’t a major factor and you prefer larger phones, get the new Pixel 9 Pro XL. But if you value a more compact phone or just want to save a bit of cash, you won’t miss out on much with the regular Pixel 9 Pro.

So, the good news is that it doesn't sound like there will be a massive chasm between the three Pixel 9 models. Much like with previous years buyers will get most of the good stuff even if they opt for the regular Pixel 9. Essentially, at least from the picture that leaks and reports have help us build, Google is using the new Pixel 9 Pro to fill in the gap that existed between the Pro and non-Pro Pixels from previous years. Now you won't have to pay $300 to jump to the more premium device, as long as you are okay with a smaller one.
