Overall, the Google Pixel 9 smartphone is an excellent compact phone for the upper midrange. It's very good for normal landscape or macro photography and certainly has an edge when it comes to Google AI features and 7 years of promised updates. Currently going for RM3699 (lower than its RM3999 release price), it's still a bit pricey for a phone of this size and range. But it is the lowest price you can get for an official Pixel smartphone here in Malaysia. While quite a few reviewers may lament the Tensor G4 chipset's overall performance, it exceeds in areas (like AI) that other chipsets are slow with. Couple that with the Pixel 9's very good camera and it's a good device to stay future-proofed with (7 years of updates is no joke). Other contenders in this range include the RM3159 Samsung Galaxy S24, which is thinner and has AI (minus an AI image generator) with good cameras.

f your budget is $800, it's hard not to recommend Google's Pixel 9, especially while it's on sale at $250 off. Sure, the Samsung Galaxy S24 is a tough competitor, but I actually think this is the better buy. It gives you access to some useful new AI features, and you get all the perks of the Pixel experience, like excellent software, display quality, and cameras. The Pixel 9's Pro and Pro XL versions might be flashier, but the baseline version of Google's flagship phone should not be overlooked.

If there was any doubt about Google's newfound hardware engagement, the Pixel 9 should extinguish all of them — at least for the display. The Pixel 8 already had a pretty great screen, so it caught me completely off-guard seeing two generations' worth of OLED emitter upgrades in the Pixel 9. It's not your usual type of year-over-year improvement — especially two years in a row — and it's nice to know that Google is finally sourcing the best displays possible. The phone did see another slight bump in price, but it has the look and feel to back it up, and the screen to seal the deal. Of course, it's not without flaws, and there are features competing phones have that the Pixel 9 doesn't.

Overall the Pixel 9 is a functional well made easy to use device. It provides a seamless user experience, and has quite a number of interesting new AI features to explore. You can pick one up from all the usual retailers at the recommended retail of $1349 AUD for the 128GB and $1499 for the 256GB, but it’s always a good idea to shop around, many retailers and carriers often have specials running.

If you're a Pixel 9 owner, your phone comes equipped with the ability to connect to a satellite when you need help. Satellite SOS gets triggered by attempting a 911 call. If you don't have a cell signal or aren't connected to Wi-Fi, the new service can help you contact emergency responders. Google talked with CNET more about how the Satellite SOS works and even let us try a demo out at its headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Ultimately, whilst the Google Pixel 9 is capable of taking some great photos, with another price increase over last years model, it feels overpriced compared to the competition, and 128GB is not good value for money these days. The Google Pixel 9 is a small flagship phone without a 3rd telephoto camera. This is fundamental in what’s missing from this camera. All other brands (excluding Apple) will aim to give you a triple camera setup on the back, often for less money than this. If this was a mid-range phone, I’d still want a telephoto camera on the back. If this was a budget phone, then it would be entirely reasonable for there to only be a dual camera setup on the back.

The Pixel 9 does not offer significant innovation in terms of appearance or hardware compared to its predecessor, and in this area, it doesn’t particularly stand out against the competition. The cameras are good but not exceptional, the battery capacity is below what has become the standard even in more affordable devices, and the maximum storage capacity is 256 gigabytes—relatively low, considering many mid-range models now offer double that. However, when it comes to software, the Pixel 9 showcases Google's latest AI innovations, from new features in the photos and camera apps to the introduction of its smart assistant. Another advantage is the issue of updates—Pixel devices are the first to receive Android updates, and Google promises seven years of support for these updates.

Much to Google’s chagrin, I’m sure the Pixel 9’s appeal is the same as it always has been. The software is the best interpretation of Android, the camera is excellent, and for the first time ever, the hardware meets and even exceeds the competition. Gemini AI is not a reason to buy or upgrade any phone yet, as its functionality often only caters to quite specific situations or is frivolous in nature — and therefore won’t be used all the time either. Gemini isn’t listed as a pro or a con in our review, and that sums up the way I feel about it in general. It’s not great, and it’s not terrible. It’s just there.

The combination of stylish and elegant hardware with the most fluid pure Android software experience makes the Pixel 9 compelling, especially if you know you won’t be bothered by the lack of a dedicated zoom lens or 8K video. Pixel 9’s camera system and the stunning ultra-bright screen are both outstanding, even if they are not quite best-in-class like Pixel 9 Pro XL. Pixel 9 series offers more AI features than any other on the market too. This is still a €1,000 smartphone if you choose the more sensible 256GB storage option. So if you are going to spend that much money on a new phone, then maybe you should go the extra mile and splash out the extra €200 on a 9 Pro model? That’s what I would recommend. As for me, I love bigger screens so I'd buy the Pixel 9 Pro XL which I called a "perfect Android smartphone".

I've never been a big fan of Pixel phones, but after using the Pixel 9 for a month, I think that it's a great phone that you should consider purchasing for your next upgrade, especially if you're not trying to drop $1000 on a Pixel 9 Pro. Tensor G4 may not be the most powerful chip on the market, but it's perfect for the Pixel and how Google is positioning this phone, especially when paired with 12GB of RAM. Its performance is great, battery life is great, and you won't be disappointed by its cameras unless you're hoping for a telephoto lens with strong zoom capabilities. Yes, the Pixel 9 still doesn't get all the features you'll find on the Pro phones, and that's a problem.

Should you buy a Google Pixel 9? In my opinion, the smartphone checks all the boxes with an impressive camera, better and upgraded display, plenty of AI features, and decent battery life. The only area where Pixel 9 lacks is performance, while it's good for day-to-day usage, it struggles with demanding applications and multitasking. Additionally, it has some major heating issues due to a missing vapour-cooling chamber. So, is it the “King of Android'? Well in terms of software, user experience and AI features, it definitely is one of the best Android smartphones.

The Pixel 9 is undoubtedly the best non-Pro flagship phone Google has made. It has a good balance of premium looks and features, shaving a bit off the cost of its top-tier phone of the same size. The problem is that without a telephoto camera and the best AI features, which are limited to the more expensive 9 Pro series, the standard Pixel 9 is just a bit too close to the much better value Pixel 8a in features and capabilities. That leaves it in a difficult spot. If the £999 Pixel 9 Pro blows the budget, then £800 for the Pixel 9 is still a lot to spend when you can get 80% of the experience for just over half the cost with a £419 Pixel 8a. The Pixel 9 is therefore a good phone that is overshadowed by better Google phones at both ends of the spectrum. I would wait for a sale to make the price more tempting.

It's too bad that Google has already spent all our sympathy points on its current state of Gemini smarts. Others would be even less forgiving since it's a price hike with no tangible improvements to power or battery life. Also, we're not sure if 128GB configurations are still relevant in the premium space, especially when consumers no longer get physical storage alternatives (no microSD card tray) or are expected to pay for more cloud storage (don't forget, these prices don't factor in Google One subscriptions yet). Their costs rack up once you're going into 256GB or higher territory. It's also puzzling why Google didn't bother with more modern (and faster) UFS storage.Anyway, they're still pretty phones that shoot well and work well, so they get a pass this year. Here's hoping that Google will tone down the crazy a little.

So, should you be investing $799 / Rs 79,999 in the Pixel 9? We will keep it simple – while the Pixel 9 is an excellent phone, it is not exactly the sort of spec demon that some similarly (and some even lower) priced phones are, and its camera and update edges over the competition are not as massive as in the past. Although its camera performance is very good, those looking at a compact-ish design with good cameras and good hardware can also consider the Samsung Galaxy S24, the iPhone 15, or the Xiaomi 14, all of which match the Pixel 9 and even have their own special features. Even the Pixel’s once-unique update record has been matched by Samsung, which also brings seven years of updates to the table.

There's a slightly better and bigger display, a nicer ultrawide camera, autofocus on the selfie camera, many new AI features, better battery life, and an overall nicer package. However, it's also a little more expensive than last year. Should you buy it over the Pixel 8? I don't think you should. Let’s accept the truth. No smartphone has achieved the pinnacle of perfection, and the Pixel 9, with its few shortcomings, is no different. The video recording is not up to the flagship level. My main gripe is the slow charging speeds, which honestly are far behind many notable industry peers. Regardless, I strongly believe that Pixel 9 is a splendid phone, something that would be well-loved by Android purists and mobile shutterbugs. No other phone integrates AI with such ease as the Pixel 9, making it a worthy contender. Between its wonderful build, good-as-ever photography capabilities, and new AI tool, the Pixel 9 is certainly Google’s best entry-level flagship yet. However, we should expect nothing less from a phone that costs $100 more this year. Still, all the new additions and seven years of promised support make this phone worth every penny, even when pitted directly against the best from Apple and Samsung. Still, that doesn’t mean the Pixel 9 is a slam-dunk recommendation. The phone’s value proposition is definitely lessened if you’re not intrigued by Gemini and the various imaging manipulation tools onboard. The Pixel 9 is another excellent flagship phone from Google, and is an improvement on the Pixel 8 in almost every way. However, for a second year in a row Google has hiked the price by £100, and that means it’s now competing directly with some very strong and established competition. Its display and camera are competitive with the Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15 equivalents, but performance is much slower. It’s a shame to see Google switching to a more derivative design language too, even if the Pixel 9 is fundamentally built well. Meanwhile, Google’s vast suite of AI tools continue to impress, disappoint and confound in roughly equal quantities, with the odd spritz of ‘meh’ for good measure. The Pixel 9 is still an excellent choice, but Google is going to need to attain a little more consistency now that it’s mixing in more exclusive circles.

In the previous Pixel generation, the price difference between the basic and Pro models was $300. With a similar performance level and almost the same features, the Pixel 8 was an alternative to Google's top models. Unfortunately, Google was unable to maintain the price level in 2024. With an MSRP of $799, the Pixel 9 is already in the premium segment. If we were to pick up the 256 GB model (the Pro model comes with this much storage space at launch), the price rises to $899. This makes the basic Pixel is only $100 cheaper than the Pro. As a technology journalist, this makes me wonder who I should recommend the Pixel 9 to. This is because Pixel fans get more of what characterizes the device series in the Pro model. Those who don't care about the manufacturer will enjoy more powerful and more functional devices for less money.

This is the Pixel 9, what Google calls as a phone full of firsts, and to which I'm gonna partially agree. See, this particular phone represents a change in Google's ever-changing approach to smartphones. First we had the Nexus which started expensive, then became affordable, only to become expensive again. Then we had the Pixel which started expensive, only to become a border-line midranger with the Pixel 5 in order to drop the price. By the time the Pixel 6 series launched, Google made the logical decision of giving users a choice.

Overall, I really like the Pixel 9 and I do think it’s one of the best Pixels Google has made in years. The hardware feels premium, the refreshed design is great, the software feels smart (despite leaning into generative AI too much) and the camera experience remains superb. There’s a lot to love with this phone. At the same time, I find it tough to recommend. For existing Pixel users, there isn’t a ton here to justify an upgrade unless you’re rocking a Pixel 6 or older. And for non-Pixel users, it really depends what your current phone is. However, for anyone rocking a flagship device from the likes of Samsung or Apple released anytime in the last three years, chances are it already outperforms the Pixel 9. And that brings us to the price.

In day-to-day use, you'll likely never notice the difference between these devices, but once you start making greater demands – gaming or computational photography, for example – then the distinction becomes more apparent. Is the Pixel 9 worth the asking price? I think it is: it's more expensive than the Pixel 8 from 2023, but it's a better phone too. Google got a lot right with its new Pixel 9 lineup. It stepped up the build quality and design, now easily matching what we see from Samsung. The new design, while simple, is unerringly elegant and cohesive. These phones have the same fundamental flat glass slab design as the iPhone 15, Galaxy S24, and countless other phones, but they look distinctive and "Pixel-y" at a glance. The camera bar is a bit chunky, but it's centered and stable when you set your phone down. We also appreciate how well the Pixels fit in cases, which most people use on their phones. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is the more expensive of the phones at $1,100, which is a bit harder to justify now that the Pixel 9 Pro exists, unless you need/want its larger, beautiful display and slightly better battery life.

If your budget is $800, it's hard not to recommend Google's Pixel 9.

The Google Pixel 9 is an excellent smartphone that successfully balances performance, design, and innovative features. It may not have the larger screen or the additional camera capabilities of the Pro models, but it holds its own as a reliable, powerful device that’s a joy to use daily. The AI-driven features are more than just novelties—they genuinely enhance the user experience, making everyday tasks easier and more intuitive. For those who value a top-tier camera, a clean Android experience, and long-term software support, the Pixel 9 is a standout choice in its price range.

I have used the Pixel 9 for close to a week now and while I am certain that in the coming days as I use the phone more I will discover more of its strengths, and weaknesses, and what it can do and what it cannot. But even in this one week I have realised that I thoroughly enjoyed using the phone. The design, the display, the camera performance, the battery life, the clean Android and some of its nifty AI Gemini features make the Pixel 9 a superb phone that can delight users day after day. That it remains relatively cool while running games is cherry as that idiom goes. But it is not winning all the time. The chipset — and more so its performance tuning — could have been better. Similarly, the speakers should have been better.

The Pixel 9’s appeal as a phone is higher than ever then, but unfortunately, so is its price.

Time will tell if Google manages to improve its guardrails before the Pixel 9 smartphone becomes generally available. But the rapid evolution of these AI systems suggests this problem will keep on growing as the technology becomes more advanced, and the influence of AI may become harder to spot in images.

With this year's Google Pixel lineup, the vanilla model may feel a little lost at first glance - it's no longer the compact Pixel and, well, there no longer is a compact Pixel in this generation. The fact that it's as large and heavy as the 9 Pro and the same weight as the Plus-size versions from Apple and Samsung is limiting its appeal to a significant chunk of what could have been its target audience. But alongside the heft, there are improvements that just might help make its case. The increased battery life is one such argument for the Pixel 9, the nudge in battery capacity contributing a gram or two, but also an hour or two of active use. The camera upgrades, while not huge, actually do elevate the 9 a notch above the last generation.

For so many years, non-Pro Pixels have existed as an also-ran next to Samsung’s base Galaxy S phones, primarily for people who appreciate Google’s software wizardry and regular feature drops. But with the Pixel 9, Google has upped its hardware design while once again doubling down on what it does best. It has a gorgeous screen, class-leading cameras and a more refined appearance, plus more AI-powered tools than anyone else. Pretty good ones at that. You also get fantastic software support including seven years of OS and security updates. Aside from a couple of omissions like no support for Qi2 magnetic wireless charging and Zoom Enhance, the Pixel 9 has everything you want and need from a high-end Android handset. Google’s software — which was already a major plus — is becoming a pillar of dominance.

Comparing Google's Pixel 9 Pro XL vs the regular 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro, to see which flagship phone is best for you. From the camera tech and gaming skills to the battery life and AI features, here's how the Pixel 9 Pro XL and other Google smartphones stack up. The Pixel 9 is the Pixel for those that don’t need, nor want all the bells and whistles of the full Pro Pixel experience. The compact form-factor in a premium design, which offers one of the smoothest experiences from Android available, and still gets the full 7-years of updates makes for a phone that’s worth a look. I’m again impressed with the 6.3” Actua Display, with the screen easily viewable in even full sunlight, and the dual rear camera system uses the same top-tier sensors as those in the Pixel 9 Pro series, making a great combo for those that don’t need a telephoto sensor. The Gemini and AI inclusions are interesting, and their usability and functionality are growing, but I’m still waiting on that ‘killer’ use case for AI.

Okay, so – should you buy the Google Pixel 9? I think if you don’t care about gaming on a phone at all – then yes, go for it. This phone is amazing for photography and not gonna lie – I want to replace one of my phones with this. There are a lot of good and actually useful features like the Pixel Screenshots, and I think the Tensor G4 does what it is designed to do very well. Great efficiency too. It’s a misunderstood chipset. Just one word of advice – please do not get the 128GB storage version. You need at least 256GB. You’ll thank me later.

I always thought I wanted the biggest phone. I really did. The Pixel 9 has changed my line of thinking a little bit. At $799, it’s $100 more than last year’s base model. It’s also only $200 away from the Pro model, which has the same body and internal upgrades that may be worth it for some. Still, if I was ignorant of those versions and thought this was the only model Google released this year, I’d still be completely satisfied. Even in that context, though, it still holds up rather well across the board. No, it doesn’t have a telephoto lens, and it doesn’t come with a little more RAM, but that’s totally okay. For the majority of users out there, the Pixel 9 is powerful enough, if not more powerful than they actually need.

The Google Pixel 9 is one of the coolest redesigns I’ve seen, bringing the Pixel phone into a more modern world of bright colors and rounded camera bumps. It packs so many Pixel 9 Pro specs you may wonder what’s missing, until you have to pay for the best AI features. The Pixel 9 still stands on its own as a capable AI phone, with cool new photo and personalization features, and more on the way. If you don’t need zoom, and you’re not a big fan of AI, this is the Pixel to buy, especially if it drops in price.

It will depend on your situation, but I’d recommend the Pixel 9 to almost anyone who’s after a top-tier Android experience in 2024. If you've got that extra $200 to spend, go for it and get the Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL. But if you want to avoid shelling out for the best of the best, this phone is pretty fantastic. Google has always been strong at offering a more affordable alternative to its top-end phone, and that's still the case here. The Pixel 9 feels the most accomplished we’ve ever seen of one of the company’s phones, and I'd seriously consider buying this over the top-end phones out there from all the other Android competition.

Is the Pixel 9 worth $100 more than the Pixel 8? A marginally better chipset with more RAM, an improved dual-camera system, and on-device AI processing may not seem like much of an upgrade, but it all adds up to a phone that is much more fun and capable. I just wish Google would treat it like a flagship instead of gatekeeping features and limiting the base storage.

After spending time with the Google Pixel 9, I’m convinced that Google might have created the best-value AI phone of 2024 so far. Google has put serious thought into making the Pixel 9 a device that truly balances price and utility, even with its $100 price increase. The AI-driven features, though not all equally useful in daily life, do have merit in ways that improve the user experience of owning this phone—at least when they work as expected. Sure, the Pixel 9 might not have the triple-camera setup or the brighter displays of its Pro siblings, but this base model holds its own in all the areas that matter. The phone delivers a lot without asking you to pay the premium for features you might not need. If you’re looking for a smart, reliable phone packed with AI features that make a difference, the Pixel 9 is an easy recommendation that doesn’t sacrifice the essentials.

The Google Pixel 9 is worth the amount of money you'll likely pay to own it. This device is every bit the step up from the Pixel 8 that you'll wish it was, especially if all you're looking for is a slightly better set of cameras and a hardware redesign that actually, truly makes a difference to the average user. The edges have been round for years — now they're flat. You'll also get the latest version of Android and Google's guarantee that you'll have 7 years of updates to both the operating system and security software. A few years ago, such a promise would have been shocking — now it's just a very welcome "must have." I would recommend that you purchase one of Google's cases for the device at the same time as you purchase the smartphone as Google's cases work well and keep with the tone of the design of the phone.

The Google Pixel 9 is an amazing smartphone that ticks all the right boxes for a flagship device in 2024. With its powerful AI features, stunning camera system, and sleek design, the Pixel 9 is a top contender in the crowded premium smartphone market. Google has delivered a device that excels in day-to-day use, thanks to its seamless integration of AI and hardware. However, the increased price may make it a tougher sell for those who were drawn to previous Pixel models for their affordability. Additionally, the Pixel 9 Pro offers even better camera features and a larger screen at a slightly higher price, making the choice between the two more difficult than ever. If you’re looking for a stylish, powerful smartphone with cutting-edge AI features, the Pixel 9 is an excellent choice. But for those who demand the very best in camera performance or want a larger display, the Pixel 9 Pro might be worth the extra investment. Regardless of which model you choose, Google’s Pixel 9 series is a very impressive phone.

As innovative as it may sound, the Google Pixel 9 is not an easy recommendation for its asking price of Rs 79,999. Its AI features like Gemini, Circle to Search, and generative image are not exclusive to the smartphone. Gemini is accessible on all Android smartphones, and Samsung offers comparable AI capabilities with Galaxy AI on its flagship S24 and foldable models. Additionally, the Pixel 9 falls short in portrait photography and battery life and underperforms in display resolution, performance, and charging speeds. The handset also feels half-baked, with the latest Android OS and features like Photo Studio and Call Notes, not available out of the box.

The Pixel 9 is loaded with new AI features, many of which are fun, amusing and moderately useful. But that's not why you should consider buying this phone. It's the Pixel 9's quality camera, premium build and reliable battery life that make it worth your time and attention. Google is on the right track with the Pixel 9's new AI tricks; features like the ability to search screenshots, summarize phone calls and generate to-do lists feel like progress toward making our phones easier to navigate. But none of the Pixel 9's new software tools feel upgrade-worthy on their own, at least not yet. If you're a Pixel fan upgrading from an older phone, like the Pixel 6 or earlier, you'll find a lot to love about the Pixel 9. But keep in mind that for the same price, Samsung's Galaxy S24 has a brighter screen and a dedicated telephoto lens for taking zoomed photos.

The Pixel 9 is easy to recommend to anyone looking for an Android phone. We especially like its high-quality build, outstanding cameras, bright display, and Google’s seven-year software support window. At $799, Gemini AI's current shortcomings are more palatable here than they are on the pricier Pixel Pro models, and while there's still some work to do, there's no denying Google is already way ahead of the game. For the highest-end Android experience, we recommend Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra for its S Pen stylus and unrivaled productivity prowess.

The Google Pixel 9 falls into a few of the usual pitfalls for Google's phones, chiefly weak performance. But the Pixel 9 excels in many key areas, with battery life taking a major leap forward. Camera quality is still as impressive as ever — even if the Pixel 9's output doesn’t always compare to more premium rivals. Google continuing its pledge for 7 years of software support means this could easily be a phone you keep around for many years to come.

And where it doesn’t surpass the Pixel 9, the Galaxy S24 still matches it, including Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and IP68 protection, seven years of software updates and a wealth of AI features. We’ll need to test how well the Tensor G4 chipset performs before we can determine whether or not the Pixel 9 can keep up with the Galaxy S24’s speeds, but it would need to be a fairly substantial improvement over the Tensor G3 to even draw close to the Samsung. It doesn’t look as good as the rest of the Pixel camera systems, but I don’t hate it either. I think they’re laid out like this so you can use the lenses at a better angle when using the camera in a folded state of the phone, similar to Samsung’s Flex Mode. Overall, this is the device I’m most excited about testing because, on the surface, it shows little compromise over choosing the regular Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL.

So, the good news is that it doesn't sound like there will be a massive chasm between the three Pixel 9 models. Much like with previous years buyers will get most of the good stuff even if they opt for the regular Pixel 9. Essentially, at least from the picture that leaks and reports have help us build, Google is using the new Pixel 9 Pro to fill in the gap that existed between the Pro and non-Pro Pixels from previous years. Now you won't have to pay $300 to jump to the more premium device, as long as you are okay with a smaller one.
