Análisis para el HP Compaq 2710p

It’s not cheap, but when it comes to usability the Compaq 2710p is first class, with loads of thoughtful touches making it a pleasure to use. The compact display offers a great compromise between colour reproduction and a reflection-free finish, and the extra screen size makes it a lot more practical than UMPC rivals. The keyboard is also excellent. However, the ULV processor and choice of operating system has affected performance, and you’ll have to uninstall a lot of the standard applications to get the best out of it. The omission of an optical drive and high price will also put many users off.

Finally, a lot of extra ‘bloatware’ is included with the notebook, mostly aimed at enterprise customers and of little value to the smaller business. As a result it took ages to get the 2710p up and running out of the box; several hours, in fact, to install the operating system, load all the HP add-ons, then apply the various updates. OK, it was mostly automated, but others come with this already done, making for faster deployment and a more pleasant experience all round. A compromise between a tablet and a notebook, but not a winner for small business buyers.

The HP Compaq 2710p is a highly capable and usable tablet. We were impressed with it both as a notebook and in slate mode.
True, it isn't the most powerful machine on the market but if you're looking for something to use for note taking, checking emails and generally carrying around all day, this is a highly recommended machine.

The HP Compaq 2710p is a highly configurable convertible notebook with some ultracool features. It doesn't have a very fast processor or an integrated optical drive, but its battery life is fabulous and its screen is responsive. The 2710p is somewhat ruggedized, with a full magnesium alloy enclosure that gives the 3.7-pound unit a stylish industrial look. HP says that the glass top is chemically strengthened, as well, and that the drives are shock-protected to stabilize hard-drive components during a fall. The 12.1-inch, 1280-by-800, LED-backlit screen is very bright and viewable indoors or outdoors. White and other light colors on the screen look crisp and glare-free even in bright sunshine. Indoors, the screen doesn't have the same annoying sheen under office lights that some indoor/outdoor tablets do.

It was only a few months ago that an HP product manager remarked to PC Pro that the tablet PC was "dead" as far as consumer use went (web ID: 112623). As hard as Microsoft tried, the mass market never took to the idea of pen-driven, touchscreen notebooks, and manufacturers brave enough to devote serious resources to the tablet were forced to look elsewhere. Vertical markets - such as education and healthcare industries - show the most promise. And, weighing just 1.7kg, the 2710p is probably the ideal size for holding in the crook of your arm in a warehouse. As convertible tablets go, the design is convincing. Apart from the hinge at the back, the 2710p looks like a normal ultraportable and feels well made. The base of the keyboard is solid, and both the back of the screen and wristrest feel equally tough. The keyboard is particularly well made, and typing is both fast and easy. There's even a white LED that pops out of the screen bezel to illuminate the keyboard.

Hewlett-Packard has struggled for years to find a way to define its dueling Compaq and HP brand names. The company tags its HP Pavilion systems as multimedia-friendly consumer devices, while the Compaq name is used for the company's line of business-oriented laptops and desktops (although some cheaper consumer desktops use the name Compaq Presario, so the naming confusion continues to a degree). The current lineup of Compaq-branded business laptops, including the 14-inch HP Compaq 6910p and the 12-inch HP Compaq 2510p, has comprised solid--if uninspired--products. Another new addition, the $1,749 HP Compaq 2710p convertible tablet, takes a more design-oriented approach. With brushed-aluminum accents, this is one of the nicer-looking tablets we've seen, but it's marred by one unthinkable omission.

HP's sleek convertible performs well but doesn't have the best ergonomics. Lenovo set the bar for ultra-light convertibles with its ThinkPad X60 earlier this year. HP reaches high with the light, solid, and versatile Compaq 2710p. Unlike many in its sub-five-pound class, it has power, a full digitizer, and excellent screen performance, just like the X60. Unfortunately, a few design miscues prevent HP's Tablet from taking the crown. At just more than an inch thick and starting at 4.5 pounds (although you can get it as light as 3.6 pounds), the 2710p is light enough for frequent travel. Its 11.4 x 8.4 x 1.1-inch magnesium-alloy chassis has a bare-bones industrial look to it, with a finish that resembles brushed steel--nothing like the flashy consumer notebooks we've grown accustomed to with HP. We're disappointed not to see an optical drive for this size and weight, however.

At a first glance we really like the HP Compaq 2710p. The design, although lacking a touchpad for a mouse nipple, is small, compact, but certainly stylish enough to give Sony Vaio a run for its money. Likewise it might not have a disc drive but with that 10 hour battery life (with the optional battery) and a host of other tech including an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, up to 2048MB of memory and a 100GB hard drive there is plenty here, before you even start to consider the tablet functionality.
