For the first week, I got used to the laptop. I treated it as if I’d just bought it for myself, unboxing it, downloading my favorite games, and making use of it day-to-day. I made notes of any positives and negatives that came to mind. Then, I got to testing. I ran benchmarks for tons of different use cases, noting the results. Finally, I tested some specific things I was curious about. Namely, the 16:10 vs 16:9 issue, and office work battery life tests. I also took the laptop out with me to work, to test its portability. The HP Omen Transcend 14 (2024) is a gaming laptop, and is ideal for gaming even in more demanding titles (provided it’s plugged in and not running on battery power), but it can also be used as a work laptop.

With a pinsharp OLED screen and powerful internals, the HP Omen Transcend 14 lives up to its name, outperforming my expectations as well as several rival gaming laptops in a sleek, relatively lightweight package. The display isn't too big, but that also makes it easier to carry around for hybrid-working creatives who like blowing off steam with some high-performance gaming after hours, all in the same machine. It doesn't look like a classic gaming laptop, which is either good or bad news depending on your sensibilities, but what HP has created here is a machine that's all business at the front and party at the... well, front as well, actually.

In purely functional terms, the new Omen Transcend 14 can’t match the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Gen 8. The latter may be £65 more expensive in matching trim, but that money gets you an additional 16GB of RAM, a higher TGP version of the same Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, better battery life and display software more tuned to suit professional needs. To counter that, the Omen Transcend 14 is achingly good-looking and has a better sound system, though the advantage over the Lenovo Legion 5 Slim is not huge. If it were my money, I’d go for the Lenovo Legion Slim 5, but that’s not to say I don’t desire the HP Omen Transcend 14. I really do. In a perfect world, come purchase time, I’d find the Ceramic White version on sale with a few hundred quid off and use that excuse to follow my heart rather than my head.

HP’s Omen Transcend 14 occupies an uncommon space above entry-level gaming laptops, starting further below the premium $2,000 mark than a lot of its competition. Our test model's configuration, netting you an RTX 4060 and a modern CPU inside a super-portable design for $1,599, could be incentive enough, especially if $1,599 is already pushing your budget. And the Omen is undeniably well-made, with a crisp, colorful OLED screen for general use and gaming. However, when you compare it on other aspects, the Omen Transcend 14 isn’t quite as appealing, albeit still a reasonable value. With budget laptops, a few hundred dollars up or down is a significant percentage of the price, but when shopping in the $1,600-plus tier, it’s only the difference between one or two spec selections.

If you're after a speedy laptop that can also play AAA games, then the HP Omen Transcend 14 makes a very compelling case. Superlight and portable, it's great whether playing on its OLED display or using one of the best gaming monitors. What it doesn't offer is a great battery life or a wealth of ports, but it is a competitively priced and smart-looking laptop well worth your time. As for the rivalry between it and the Zephyrus G14? There's very little in it. If you're after something more showy go for the G14, but the HP is the more grown-up choice.

The HP OMEN Transcend 14 (14-fb0000) is a capable mini-gaming beast. Want to go on vacation but also need to progress through the Call Of Duty: Warzone Season Pass? Sure, this device is compact, it fits in most backpacks with ease, and it has enough power to play a lot of new gaming titles with pleasantly bumped visuals. This reminds us that the cooling is capable and that’s why the CPU can offer a high P-core clock of almost 2.90 GHz in long loads and the GPU can maintain 2160 MHz core frequency in long gaming sessions. These are great results for a 14-incher. Also, the SSD is snappy and the fans aren’t loud even in “Performance” mode. The 2.8K OLED display is great thanks to its 120Hz refresh rate and infinite contrast ratio.

HP gets points for style with its new 14-inch Omen Transcend model, a compact option for the compact gaming/creative crowd in the not-expensive-but-not-cheap mainstream price range. With performance suitable for high-quality 1080p or mid-quality 1440p gaming, along with a striking design, it's a definite option to consider if you're in the market and don't care about a few potential flaws. The Transcend comes in dark gray or white -- the latter costs $20 extra -- and can be configured in a variety of ways. The only display available is the 2,880x1,00 60Hz/120Hz dynamic-refresh-rate OLED, though. It starts at $1,500 with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, GeForce RTX 4050, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM and Wi-Fi 6E.

There aren’t many laptops in the market that are as versatile as the HP Omen Transcend 14, as this is a laptop that combines two distinctive characters into one. If you are looking for just a gaming laptop or a thin-and-light notebook, you are better off with something else. However, if you want a laptop that can do both, I believe there is nothing better than the HP Omen Transcend 14.

This thin and light gaming laptop review of the HP Omen Transcend 14 is a little different from the rest. Mainly because until now, such laptops were mainly of three kinds. You either had the thin and light laptop with a dedicated GPU but it wasn’t a gaming laptop per se. Or you had the thin and light laptop with a really good iGPU, preferably any AMD APU with a Radeon 780M GPU. Third type of laptops are actual gaming laptops with applicable thermals and specifications. The last category is pretty rare. Because, a thin and light laptop with full-fledged gaming internals and a gross weight of just 1.6kg is rarely seen, because it is a hard combination to pull off. Notably, the ASUS Zephyrus G14 is one similar product, weighing in at just 1.5kg. And now, with the Omen Transcend 14, HP has tried to do just that. So, have they succeeded? Here’s my answer.

The new HP Omen Transcend 14 is an excellent gaming laptop for its size. It has enough power to run most games and is portable enough to carry anywhere in a backpack. And that's not all, as the laptop can also be used for creative work such as video editing and content creation. You also get a great IMAX-certified 2.8K resolution OLED display and a decent battery life. The keyboard and the touchpad are also pretty good on the laptop. If you're looking to purchase a compact and light gaming laptop that can also be a creative work machine, the HP Omen Transcend 14 is a great buy at the price. It really transcends what a slim laptop can do.

I got a better idea about the usability of this device after reviewing the HP OMEN Transcend 16. The 16 is capable, upgradable, and decently specced, but it isn’t exactly usable on the fly. That’s where this laptop comes in. If you want a 14-inch device that handles anything you throw at it, and you want it at the right price, then this is a great option. Tradeoffs include RAM upgradability, and more than usual heating when you run demanding games at max settings. So, if you’re a gamer first and creator second, I’d suggest you look at the Transcend 16 or explore alternatives from ASUS or Alienware, which will cost money.

The HP Omen Transcend 14 isn’t flawless, but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses. After spending a week with it, the HP Omen Transcend 14 feels like a gaming laptop made for people like me. Its understated ultraportable design makes it an ideal travel partner that won’t get you sideways glances on the train. Performance is also excellent at 1080p and medium settings, and I had a blast with the RGB keyboard. The bright and colorful OLED is another big selling point. Admittedly, the battery life isn’t great and its AI features might not mean much to most people. I also don’t like that it only uses USB-C charging — and only charges as intended with just one of the ports. While there’s not much you can do about the latter, you can ignore the AI features (if you even notice they exist) and can always keep the laptop plugged in when gaming — which is typical for gaming laptops.

At CES a few months ago, KitGuru got hands on, very briefly, with the HP Omen Transcend 14 laptop, sporting an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor, or as we prefer to call it, Meteor Lake. Our time with the laptop at CES was very brief, but now we have an example and we're ready for a full review. And we're ready to address a burning question. Is it possible a laptop this thin and light could conceivably be a gaming laptop? Spoiler alert, the answer's oh yes it can.

Every laptop is designed to balance cost with quality, catering to specific needs while ignoring others, and it’s our duty to inform you of their benefits and shortcomings and recommend those products based on what you might like. In this case, it’s pretty clear where the HP Omen Transcend 14 lies: Its thin and light 14-inch build makes it highly portable, while impressive productivity metrics, a stunning 2.8K OLED display, and a built-in graphics card create a great laptop for those who value image quality and only plan to game once in a while. But even when looking at this as a productivity laptop first and a gaming laptop second, its short battery life, frustrating touchpad, and weak audio make it far from a home run. For a gaming laptop at a nearly identical price of $1,399 but with better gaming performance, we recommend the Asus ROG Strix G17. Otherwise, if you’re on the lookout for a solid portable laptop that can game only just fine, the Omen Transcend 14 may be the right pick for you.

The HP Omen Transcend 14 is a great machine. It feels like it’s made for someone who isn’t only a gamer — if all you do is leave this on a desk and play games all day, you may still have a great experience thanks to that beautiful OLED screen. But the real value proposition comes once you pick it up and take it places, using it as a slightly heavier than the average ultraportable machine that also delivers great gaming performance when you want it. With that in mind, the optimal audience here is people who want a great gaming machine with a beautiful screen that can also be lightweight and portable. Everything involves compromises: You can get more performance in a heavier, beefier laptop. And you can get lighter weight in a laptop without a gaming GPU.

HP Omen Transcend 14 is part of a new class of gaming laptops for 2024. There remains key comparisons to be made with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and Lenovo Legion Slim 5i 14, both of which are being tested by Trusted Reviews with now. For now, I can say that other slimline gaming laptops I’ve tested like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 aren’t as sleek and elegant as this one, and the price tag is surprisingly accessible, at least by premium gaming laptop standards. You’re making some compromises to get that design. Playable frame rates at native resolution will be out of the question without dropping settings down to High or even Medium, even with DLSS turned on and Ray Tracing toned down or turned off. You’ll get more bang per buck from a conventional gaming laptop.

The Omen Transcend 14 is HP’s initial try at this class of gaming laptop, and it’s a great first attempt. A solid, thin, and light design pushes this beyond just a gaming workstation, and the OLED display is stunning. It seems HP focused a little too heavily on the portability of this laptop, however. USB-C charging worries me with the RTX 4070 configuration, and gaming struggles on the high-resolution display with lower-end configurations. This is a solid gaming laptop, and if it weren’t for stiff competition from Asus at the same price, it would get a recommendation. That’s unfortunately not the case. At list price, the Omen Transcend 14 compromises a bit too much compared to the competition. However, if you spot the laptop on sale, particularly at around $1,400 for the RTX 4060 configuration, it’s a great machine.
