Granted, as far as “premium” notebooks go, $1,400 isn’t that high a price. The fancy-schmancy Toshiba Kirabook that we reviewed last month was two grand. And like that one, the Spectre XT comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, two years of Norton AV, and dedicated support service.

My esteemed colleague Brian Klug tweeted recently that PC manufacturers can't seem to produce anything that doesn't have some horrible flaw. Everything could be perfect except for one thing that was cheaped out on, and it threatens to bring the whole thing down, and unfortunately his assertion holds water here. The Spectre XT TouchSmart has the makings of a solid ultrabook, but it's let down by miserly decisions on HP's part.

Aside from the HP Spectre XT TouchSmart’s battery life, the overall experience was rather pleasant and comfortable. Not only did the notebook perform well, but it did so looking really nice — both in terms of the exterior casing and the quality of the display. While we wouldn’t hesitate to offer a recommendation, we could see the price being an issue for some. That is not to say the Spectre XT TouchSmart isn’t worth what HP is asking, but just that there are plenty of less expensive options to choose from.

With a large and lovely touchscreen display and eye-catching, brushed-aluminum design, we really wanted to love the HP SpectreXT TouchSmart 15-4010nr. Unfortunately the terrible battery life and poor audio let it down. And because the HP SpectreXT TouchSmart 15-4010nr is heavy for its size, we're not fans.

HP is clearly marketing the HP Spectre XT TouchSmart to the Ultrabook-cool crowd, but it doesn’t quite fit. It looks great when it’s sitting here on my desk—hooked up to external speakers and a power block—but it’s hardly something I’d want to tote around with me on a regular basis. And it would definitely need to have better battery life, speaker quality, and weight before it could really be called an Ultrabook.

In terms of what an ultrabook can deliver, you can’t go wrong with the HP Spectre XT TouchSmart. Its display still impresses me even after using it for several hours and its Intel Core i7 CPU made multitasking a complete breeze. There are only two things you should consider if you’re on the fence about this laptop: its weight and its battery life. As long as those two points don’t bother you, and you welcome the additional processing power, then we think the HP Spectre XT TouchSmart would make a fine addition to your life.

Fitting the words "15.6-inch screen" and "ultrabook" into the same sentence takes some doing. A month ago, we saw Asus manage the feat with the Zenbook UX51VZ-DH71$1,999.00 at Sears. HP delivers a 15-inch, high-resolution, touch-screen ultrabook—well, if you allow 5 pounds to qualify as an ultrabook—with Core i7 power at a reasonable price. There's even a Thunderbolt port. What's not to like?

The HP Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook 15-4010nr has something most Windows PCs lack: a Thunderbolt port.If you share your household with Mac users, the HP Spectre XT TouchSmart 15-4010nr is a good buy if you absolutely need Windows 8 and need to trade files. It's a decent large-screen performance ultrabook made better with the addition of a Thunderbolt port.

The long-awaited (we first saw it summer 2012) HP Spectre XT TouchSmart is a great all-around 15-inch ultrabook. It has the requisite touch screen, as well as HP's usual combo of decent keyboard and touch pad, and the Beats audio sound system, plus a hard-to-find Thunderbolt port. Still, for $1,299, it's not unreasonable to look for better battery life or even some graphics muscle.

The HP Spectre XT TouchSmart 15-4010nr is a good choice if you need multimedia creation power with a relatively large screen. The packed-in video software boosts the system's overall score, since the hobbyist won't have to worry about photo or video editing software. The two-year subscription to Internet Security is also a huge plus. Unfortunately, the extra hours of battery life and performance boost from its SSD give the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T the extra points to let it hold on to its crown as out high-end ultrabook Editors' Choice.
