The Mate X is proof the future is nearly here, but you might not want to buy a first generation foldable phone. But there's no doubt this is better hardware than the Galaxy Fold - we'll have to wait and see if the software is as good.

The Huawei Mate X might be the first foldable phone you seriously consider paying gobs of money for in 2019. Its solid-feeling hinge allows this handset to fold up, transforming from full 8-inch tablet into a more-traditional-looking 6.6-inch and 6.38-inch smartphone with a screen on either side. It feels like you're holding the future in your hand, just know that your transformative euphoria over this phone comes at a very high price.

Huawei was one of the first to show off its foldable smartphone, the Mate X is an exciting start. Yes it's big and chunky, and it'll undoubtedly take time to mature into a product that most consumers will want to use, but it's a very promising device and form factor with tonnes of potential. We suspect with this particular model that the price tag is almost impossible to swallow for most average consumers, and maybe even for the tech-enthused early adopter. But if Huawei works on the form, makes it smaller, polishes the software to make it a killer experience, and brings the price down, you may just start to see it in a few more hands.

Samsung struggled to make a strong case for them with the Galaxy Fold, with that device seemingly sacrificing a decent phone experience to achieve the new design. With the Mate X that doesn’t seem to be an issue and this looks like it’ll be fantastic whether it's folded down into a phone or unfurled into a tablet.

The Huawei Mate X is a folding phone pioneer. From our hands on time with the device it not only definitely proved that folding phones are far from a gimmick, but it also genuinely wowed us with its build quality as well as fit and finish. The Mate X is genuinely exciting to hold in the hand, and for that Huawei must be congratulated. However, naturally, no judgement can be bestowed on the phone until we get chance to extensively test the device, as its incredibly high price will almost certainly not be the only obstacle it will need to overcome to win our approval.

Some might ask, “Is it worth $2,600?” It needs to be clear that Mate X is not a continuation of any existing equipment or design. Although it is based on existing smartphone and tablet technology, it is still a new form. For this reason, Huawei’s Mate X and Samsung’s Galaxy Fold phones must now create an exclusive market for devices, and must also recover a lot of research and development costs. Today’s early user prices reflect all of these factors, and it is unfair to judge the phone with current smartphone standards and prices.

Last week, Samsung and Huawei announced the $1,980 Galaxy Fold and $2,600 Mate X foldable phones, respectively. I gawked along with everyone else, absorbing every detail I could, but it wasn't until I spent a good 5 minutes playing around with the Mate X in a cramped, stuffy meeting room at MWC 2019 that the appeal of foldable devices sunk in on a much deeper level. Not every foldable phone design will be a revelation, but for me, opening and closing the Mate X was.

The decision to show media the device in this controlled fashion has us believe that, again like Samsung, Huawei has made a technological marvel but is cautious about the software bugs. A room with scores of tech journalists will quickly find way to pick holes in a new device as much as they have just fawned over it.

Overall, the Mate X offers a larger display on all fronts with a more refined design, thinner frame and gapless hinge with minimal compromises. Of course there's still question marks over the durability of the hinge and screen in the long-term, but for now the Mate X is the foldable phone to beat.

The Huawei Mate X is a tablet-phone hybrid with an exterior folding display Huawei calls “FullView display,” which is wrapped around the outside of the device. The single flexible 8-inch OLED display provides a tablet experience when open, as well as a phone mode. The Mate X in tablet mode is not quite square with an aspect ratio of 8:7.1. Its 2,480 x 2,200 resolution results in 414 pixels per inch.

Well, we kind of expected big things from Huawei this year with its new phones, but only superlatives can be used for everything to do with the Huawei Mate X smart phone. In the lead up to the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Huawei showed off a phone that, at this stage, looks to be state-of-the-art in everything. (And those superlatives apply equally, as we’ll see, to the purchase price).

A foldable phone that expands into a tablet has been thought of as the next form factor for mobile devices. Huawei has thrown conventional design out of the window with Mate Xs by placing the foldable screen on the outside and we think this design makes great sense as you're not stuck with a secondary smaller display. What remains to be seen is if the Mate Xs can prove to be durable enough for the long run. It's a pricey proposition and without Google's framework, it requires you place your faith in Huawei.

The Mate Xs is a 5G foldable with insane power, a super camera set-up, and if Huawei’s claims are true, enough juice to last over a day. Arguably there’s no better way to futureproof your pocket, problem is, with no word on pricing or availability will it burn a hole in it?

Unlike the original Mate X, the Mate Xs is a phone made for global audiences. The phone is priced at Euros 2499 (around Php 138K) and will be shipping in Global markets next month. Take note though – Euro pricing is typically higher than local pricing, and the Mate Xs may end up being significantly cheaper if and when it hits our shores.

The Mate XS will receive a global launch (not the US, obviously), which includes select regions throughout Europe. We also know that it doesn’t come with the fancy leather case bundled with the original Mate X. We will be able to buy one separately, however, and something tells me you’ll want to as there’s no way I’d put this thing in my pocket unprotected!

According to Huawei Malaysia, the Mate Xs is slated to arrive this coming 20th March 2020 in Malaysia which isn’t too far away. We’ll keep you posted! In my short time with the Mate XS, I thought it was impressive. It’ll be interesting how long the fold lasts, how good the camera is, how long that 4,500mAh battery can survive for, and what apps have been optimized for its expansive 8-inch screen.

The Mate Xs is a marginal improvement on the Mate X we saw last year and is a very expensive device. Even so, it still has a lot of potential and there's no doubt it's an impressive device.

The Mate Xs might be a minor update, but considering we didn’t get a proper European release for the Mate X it doesn’t feel needless. It would have been odd selling last year’s model at a high price with older internals and the improvements to the hinge and display are always going to be welcome. I still have plenty of questions about software and I have yet to really see how apps adapt between folds - this could make or break the Mate.

The Huawei Mate XS is arguably the most satisfying foldable phone that we’ve used. It's going to cost a lot, and it may be a little on the fragile side, but what it lacks in affordability and durability it makes up for in power, features and wow factor.

Huge thanks to Raycon for sponsoring this video. Huaweis new folding Mate X2 is a super expensive device. With advertised carbon fiber supports for the bending screen maybe that cost is justified? The only way to see the insides is with a teardown!

Despite being over two years old, the foldable market still feels like it's in an embryonic state, which makes it exciting to keep an eye on but also somewhat frustrating when it comes to actually using these devices. I love a lot of what Huawei did here, especially the design. Having most of the weight of the phone directly on the user's hand is ingenious and it almost makes you question why no one else has done it yet. It's also one of the thinner foldables right now, and the cover display has one of the most natural aspect ratios we've seen on any foldable so far, so using it as a normal phone is actually a viable option.

You probably won't buy the Mate X2 - it's expensive, only on sale in China, and doesn't run Google apps and services. But from a hardware side, Huawei has knocked it out of the park, with a powerful camera and flawless foldable form factor. It’s hard to argue that this isn’t the best foldable hardware in the world right now.

Episode 7 was planned as a traditional first-impressions video of the Huawei Mate X2, a rethinking of that company's approach to folding-screen smartphones and a direct competitor to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 2. But then something happened to my own Z Fold 2 that made me wonder whether the Huawei Mate X2 might in fact be something bigger: a preview of the future of foldable phones in general. I’ve long been a fan of foldables — in theory. Many of my colleagues in the media have told me how their first time with a foldable was transformative for their views. My 1 week with the Mate X2 has indeed been a transformative experience. I can’t see the future of smartphone design going in any other direction. Whether the industry settles on an asymmetrical wedge design and inward folding display isn’t something I can predict, but I can say for certain that this is a winning design combo. The Huawei Mate X2 feels like a very polished product that’s only really held back by its lack of availability and absurdly high price.

The Huawei Mate X2 is a seriously special phone. It proves that foldables are indeed awesome, and can be durable enough to handle the real world while delivering a killer user experience. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 went part-way to making that point, but with a camera and front display that fell short compared to other flagships, the Mate X2 takes the final steps to foldable greatness.

Huawei has improved the zooming algorithms for clearer shots at much farther distances, and has also provided a way to take selfies with both the front camera for when you are in a hurry, and the exemplary rear kit when you have more time to unfurl the phone open, using the external display as a huge 6.45" viewfinder of the main camera. We consider the Mate X2 a "halo" showcase device with very limited availability and a deliberately prohibitive price tag around EUR 2300. It is not a device anyone is going to physically be owning or daily-driving any time soon. At least not as reviewed, in its current form.

With superb craftsmanship and a very pleasing design, combined with powerful performance and video hardware configuration, Huawei Mate X2 is undoubtedly one of the best folding screen products in the mobile phone market. The price starting at $2774.99 seems to be high, but combined with its innovative structural design and sincere stacking materials, Huawei Mate X2 Phone will not hinder its unique charm even if it is worth 10,000 yuan. Huawei sends its foldable smartphone into the next round and makes it much more compact. Due to trade restrictions, but also sluggish software development, not everything is new and better. You can read which ones are and why it is still a strong foldable in the test.

However, those who want to save money can also buy Galaxy Z Fold 3, which is not much worse than the ” 4″ and has already fallen significantly in price. And that’s about it. I believe that you are reading this review more out of curiosity, wondering what kind of beast is this than in order to purchase this model. However, if I am mistaken, write in the comments. And share your impressions if you already use a unique clamshell from Huawei.

By foldable phone standards, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is priced as expected at R39 999 (RRP). That said, it is still missing a few elements compared to other foldables on the market, such as 5G or the latest silicon. Added to this is an experience that still feels experimental as the unfolded mode is yet to take full advantage of the increase in screen real estate. Whether that requires better software or more developers to build applications to take advantage of the form factor is up for debate, but R40k for an experimental device is not a purchase that many can afford to make. As such, foldables in general could benefit from more iterations, and the Huawei Mate Xs 2 falls in the exact same category. It is not a device for early adopters, but rather risk takers who want to gamble on something different. Like many foldables at the moment, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 still feels too experimental to warrant buying for R40k. Add to this the fact that other foldables are sporting slightly better specifications.

The Mate Xs 2 has undeniably impressive hardware, with a few obvious caveats. The design is sleek and slender, and the outward folding screen is arguably the most exciting foldable form factor around. It’s not the most practical though, and dents and damage to the display feel almost inevitable. Performance is solid even with an older Snapdragon chip, but you’ll have to live without 5G, and put up with surprisingly spotty Bluetooth performance. Capable cameras help make up for that, but you’d expect those given the exorbitant price. As always, it’s the software side where it all breaks down. Things are better than ever before, but at this price it’s almost impossible to justify the compromises involved unless you see this as a secondary device to complement your iOS or Android phone, rather than replace it.

We may have said it a few times, but let's reiterate then - the Mate Xs 2 is the form factor you'd imagine a foldable to be and one that makes the most sense for the most people. There's just the matter of the exposed plastic screen that we have to work our way around and all will be well. But as it stands, we're not there yet, and the Mate's supplied case is hardly an ideal solution, some solution as it may be. Samsung's foldables are water-resistant and this one isn't, so there's that too. You can see that our main concern remains durability. The Mate Xs 2 is not without its strong points. The outie design allows for a nearly creaseless display, which looks and feel much better than what the Samsung Folds have. In tablet form the Mate is a joy to use, and in smartphone mode it can make you forget it's a foldable - the size and weight are just right. And it's a properly capable cameraphone too. Ultimately, if we were asked whether we'd go ahead and spend €2,000 of our own money on a Mate Xs 2 to use as a daily driver, the answer would still be no.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 smartphone is not for everybody nor does have appealing flagship features like other flagship features. Despite this, the phone is for those people who desire a foldable phone without the very distracting crease across the middle. Alongside this, the 5G connectivity will take a few years to roll out around the work, and till then it can be considered a great choice. However, the processor and software do feel underwhelming compared to the price tag. Aside from this, there are a few handfuls of downsides that aren’t able to justify the aggressive price point of Mate Xs 2. Instead of that, you can check out the Samsung Galaxy Z fold3 5G which is slightly less and offers a great value for money, while offering an optimized UI experience.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is a pretty good folding phone, at least for us in our experience with it in our review of the device for the Philippines. Its outie design gives it dimensions much closer to that of a regular phone while still retaining the flexibility and cool factor of a folding flagship. But that doesn’t hide the fact that the Mate Xs 2 is considerably more expensive than its closest rival while being saddled with the same issues that Huawei’s other flagships have to contend with. It’s better than Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 3 in some respects, but it’s worse too in others. At the end of the day, you’ll really have to think long and hard if the Mate Xs 2 – or really, any folding phone – is worth the money they’re asking for. If you’re willing to ignore some of the niggles we mentioned about the Mate Xs 2, then it’s a pretty good folding phone to be sure.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor the original Mate Xs with a tougher, slimmer and lighter design along with the customary upgrades to the cameras, processor and battery life. On its own merits, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is a beautifully designed statement piece of a phone with a unique design and one of the flattest, most gorgeous foldable OLED displays in the market though some teething problems remain. If you’re looking for a non-mainstream foldable alternative that will turn heads, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 fits the bill perfectly.

Huawei's upgrade to the original Mate Xs does something unique – it folds the wrong (or right) way – depending on your opinion. As for how it fares in the real world, it needs to be good – after all, it costs a huge amount of money. In the flesh, we can't help but be impressed by how thin and light it is – a real design showcase for the brand. Now it's a waiting game to see if it hits our shores.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see how much the Xs 2 costs when it launches in the UK. But if it does end up costing less than its predecessor, then there’s a greater chance that it’ll earn a recommendation. Of course, the biggest downside plaguing Huawei’s handhelds is the frustratingly restrictive software. The hardware might be second-to-none, but if the user experience isn’t up to scratch like recent Huawei releases, then it might be worth avoiding. Huawei’s own App Gallery is steadily improving, but it’ll have to do a lot more to convince prospective consumers when the Mate Xs 2 releases in Europe in June.

Yes, it’s expensive and no it doesn’t have 5G or Google Play, but the Mate Xs 2 is a testament to Huawei’s hardware design and innovation. It’s a stunning example of a folding phone form factor that other manufacturers have generally shied away from.

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is really an interesting foldable from the company as we found in our quick review for the Philippines, especially since it’s priced below the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 if you do direct conversions for its CNY 9999(~Php 77.7k) price in China. It’s still unknown if the phone will be priced that way once it arrives in the country – we’ll have to see in the next few months. We were told that the Mate Xs 2 will be available in the Philippines in July.

The Huawei Mate XS2 shapes out to be a great foldable device. It feels premium, and Huawei has focused on perfecting the most important aspects of a foldable - the hinge mechanism, the crease in the screen, the durability of the flexible panel, and the functionality of the OS (despite the GMS omission).

Skinny enough when closed, paper-thin when open – the Mate Xs 2 is a seriously desirable folding phone. It’s no thicker in a pocket than a traditional brickphone, yet unfurls to double the screen size. While not running the latest, most powerful silicon, it still seems plenty fast, and appears to take a great photo. In hardware terms, it’s a genuinely appealing take on foldable tech. How well an outward-facing foldable will hold up over time remains to be seen, though. It’s definitely something we’d want to know before splashing out the considerable cash Huawei will be asking for the Mate Xs 2. Still, the firm has a great track record with durability testing, and is confident its design is sturdy enough for daily use. There’s also no avoiding the lack of Google support. You have to jump through a few hoops to get the apps you’re familiar with installed, and even then it’s not always smooth sailing. But with Huawei itself now completely in charge of the operating system, updates should arrive sooner, and software support is getting better all the time.
