From a hardware point of view, the Huawei P40 Pro Plus is probably one of the best smartphones available today. But the sad thing is, that’s not the end of the story. If you’re well and truly baked into Google’s Android services, it might not be possible to give them up - even for a phone with such an amazing specs sheet. Yes, the camera is nothing short of spectacular. So much so that, after just a few minutes paying around with it, you’re likely to be put in two minds as to whether you really do need Google’s apps that much. That’s going to be your main quandary here if you’re in the market for a new smartphone. But what you need to ask yourself is: are the Google apps that you’re already very dependent on worth giving up for the best smartphone camera you can get your hands on right now? We’ll leave that to you, but with an RRP of £1,299, it’s a risky decision to make.

I realize that Huawei’s hands are tied on the software front, but it’s difficult to recommend the P40 Pro+ to most people as it stands right now. Yes, these are the best shooters I’ve ever used on a phone, but without GMS, the P40 Pro+ just feels incomplete — especially for $1350. And with Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra now offering a similar camera system alongside GMS support, The P40 Pro+ becomes an even harder sell.

In the meantime, information about the Huawei Mate 40 Pro has begun to emerge. The phone is looking to be pretty powerful on its own, but Huawei is also reportedly making a foldable device that closely resembles the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. A lot has transpired between Huawei and the United States since the original ban, but we’re excited to see what Huawei has created regardless.

Let's start with the bad. As far as the general experience went, my only issue was some wireless charging issues. The broader issue, of course, is outside of Huawei's control. You need to be sure that you'll be OK without Google services. For example, if you're an Uber driver for a living, you really need something with Google Maps. For me, I'm completely OK using the P40 Pro+.

With all that said, we'd also like to reiterate that the P40 Pro+ clearly meets the mark as a premium flagship device, which is further bolstered by the tremendous effort Huawei put into developing HMS and AppGallery. It's really shaping up properly with visible thoughtfulness and consideration. There truly is a plethora of local-specific apps in Huawei's app store for all your core daily living needs, and it's still growing even as we publish this review. I could also sideload my preferred Android gaming and messaging apps, and it's easier now with the inclusion of Petal Search. Overall, the P40 Pro+ is an excellent flagship device that is ahead of its time in several key areas but the record-breaking hardware comes with a hefty price tag of way more than a grand, and you have to jump through hoops to make some apps and services work. As with almost any new Huawei phone, the lack of Google Play Services makes it incredibly difficult to recommend. Smartphones are portals to apps and services more than anything. With that access restricted, it makes the experience of using a Huawei device incredibly frustrating. Even if you don’t use Google apps very often, the Google Play store is the best way to get most popular apps you would normally use. Until AppGallery can match the Google Play Store in selection, you’re going to be missing some of the core experiences offered to most other Android phones.

Over the past few years, Huawei has kind of stepped into Nokia’s old spot in the smartphone photography space, by recruiting some of the imaging pioneers from Nokia … by partnering with famed photography brand Leica … and by applying good old-fashioned R&D to produce some stunning phone cameras. The Huawei P40 Pro Plus is the latest evolution of that legacy – so I took it on a road trip from Brooklyn to the boonies … and along the way, this collection of cameras captured my heart. But unless you’re a phone-tweaking geek like me, you’ll probably find that no optical achievement is worth the compromises this phone carries. It’s been a year now since Huawei had launched its successful P30 series smartphones, and a lot has happened since then. Following a trade-war between the United States and China, Huawei ended up being sanctioned, with the most notable effect being that the company no longer has access to Google’s services. Last autumn, we saw the launch of the Mate 30 series, the company’s first flagship phone to ship without GMS. We had argued that those phones lacked sufficient hardware differentiation to be able to make up for the lack of Google’s services, and it would be some time before we would see Huawei’s own HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) mature to a state that represents it being a valid every-day alternative. That goal is inching ever closer as Huawei spends large resources and efforts to get developers onboard its own ecosystem.
