The Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook Plus is a cheap Chrome 2-in-1 that feels premium thanks to its comfy keyboard, bright 1200p touchscreen and sturdy chassis. Power and battery life aren't amazing, but if you just need a cheap, durable Chromebook for remote learning or getting writing done, this is a great choice.

There are areas where the IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook Plus falls short of the standard set by the Asus and Acer competition. The screen doesn't go as bright, colours aren't as vibrant, the overall feel isn't quite as premium and the performance and battery life don't quite match up. Lenovo sells a slightly more expensive version with a Core i5 1235U and a larger 512GB SSD, but that won't change the design, materials, battery life, or screen. Yet the key thing here is the pricing. The Core i3 version tested has an RRP of £499 but can regularly be found for £399 or less. The equivalent version of the Asus Chromebook Spin 714 costs £699, and while we have seen it selling for £100 less, that's still a substantial price difference. When you're operating on a tight budget, £200 per laptop is worth thinking about. It also makes the Lenovo fantastic value. You're still getting a great, business-ready Chromebook at that price.

Heck yeah! The Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook Plus is a step above the rest with its sturdy construction, speedy performance, convertible design, and vibrant touchscreen. While the battery life is about average for a Chromebook, it’s still a fantastic all-day result. The touchscreen and 2-in-1 design really give it the edge over the other Chromebook Plus models, especially for just $500. Those additional features really do make a difference. The only real downside is that the stylus isn’t included, so you’d need to pay extra for it. That’s not really a deal-breaker for me, though. It’s just a general bummer. If you can live with those minor compromises, then the Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook Plus is a phenomenal laptop for just about anybody.

Lenovo’s contribution to the new Chromebook Plus line didn’t blow us out of the water in every category, but it didn’t need to. For $499 (or less, thanks to frequent online sales), this 2-in-1 offers sufficient performance and versatility to make its price worth it. Its quality build, powerful CPU, and decent battery life make it a good choice for most people on a budget—as long as they’re okay with using ChromeOS and they’re mindful of the laptop’s toasty chassis. Though the CPU and memory performance we saw with the Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook Plus was impressive, its pleasant touchscreen pushed us to recommend the device overall. If you don’t think you’d get much use out of the touchscreen, you might appreciate Acer’s Chromebook Vero 514, a sustainably-made ChromeOS clamshell with similar CPU performance, a longer battery life, and better storage read/write speeds.

And I think that’s the takeaway. Yes, some Chromebook Plus models are better than others, and this one is one of the best I think. But all of them are great at the main Chromebook stuff, and that’s where Google has done something quite good with this entire Chromebook Plus thing. We still have other models to review, but I feel like I’ll be saying a lot of the same stuff, and that’s a good thing. Now, you just have to decide what size or form factor you want, and you can know if it is Chromebook Plus, it’s probably pretty good.

In 2021, I named that year’s edition of the Idepad Flex 5 the best Chromebook of the year. And now its once again holding that title at the end of 2023. It’s not 100% flawless, but not laptop is for this price. In short, this is a well-built, modern and complete Chromebook that delivers a lot of functionality for the money. With the right hardware, it lets you take advantage of all the possibilities of the platform in an excellent way.

If you’re looking for a great web-based productivity machine that can double as a makeshift Chromebook tablet, you can’t go wrong with the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i. Yes, there are Chromebooks out there with even more power on paper, but the actual performance is so close I sincerely think this might just be the sweet spot for Chromebook specs. Not only does it run nearly as well as Chromebooks that cost hundreds more, but it even gives many Windows machines a run for their money — as long as you understand that you’ll be limited to web-based apps and Google Play apps out of the box.

As far as upcoming software is concerned, the good news is that all Google-powered AI features will be free on Chromebook Plus models. You’ll have to pay extra for Adobe’s web-based Photoshop and Express features, but you get a three-month trial before you have to pony up the cash, which should be more than enough time to decide whether you need Firefly in your day-to-day workflow. If you’ve been waiting for a chance to upgrade your Chromebook, the Chromebook Plus lineup offers plenty of reasons to switch. It’s still based on the Chrome OS that you know and love, but the upgraded hardware and upcoming software add a little extra punch when you need to be productive. Maybe the best part is that certain Chromebook Plus models start at just $399 — not a bad price for Google’s generative AI.

If you want a capable laptop that costs less than premium Chromebooks (or bargain Windows notebooks), the new Chromebook Plus line is the way to go. The Lenovo Flex 5i is the only convertible Chromebook Plus we've had the pleasure to test, but it elevates the experience to such a degree to become an obvious choice for 2-in-1 Chromebook shoppers. It delivers compelling features, a versatile design, and excellent performance for under $500. Its battery life is just fine rather than lengthy, and we wish Lenovo had provided a standard pen, but these are reasonable concessions for such a capable and affordable ChromeOS hybrid. The overall package presents a well-balanced combination of features and makes the Flex 5i our favorite Chromebook for 2-in-1 buyers on a budget.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Flex 5i is one of the first round of Chromebook Plus laptops, a new designation Google gives devices that meet minimum spec requirements. That doesn’t mean they’re overly expensive, though — Lenovo’s Chromebook Plus costs $500. For that cash, you’ll get a well-built Chromebook with a great screen and enough power for most people.
