Lenovo's Ideapad (Yoga) Slim 7 is a good Windows laptop, and it gets more things right than it doesn't. It packs a powerful, almost desktop-class processor, and a decent build quality and a less-than-stellar display. More than anything, it's proof that going forward, we might see laptops without any compromises in the power department to go against budget PCs.

Lenovo once again gives us a masterclass on how to make a world-class laptop for under a grand. There's very little reason to spend any more unless you need an ultra-high-resolution screen.

Lenovo and AMD, where do you get off making a laptop this awesome and not making it available everywhere? Are my fellow U.S. laptop lovers and I going to really have to import this from Europe? I’m jealous! For $1,197, I could get a fairly lightweight, thin powerhouse that puts the competition to shame with its powerful AMD Ryzen 7 CPU and GPU. Also, I could move from room to room of my house without worrying about charging thanks to a whopping 17 hours and 21 minutes of battery life. Or at least I could if this laptop was available in the U.S. Why do you folks hate joy?

Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7, a 14” Ultrabook with a premium design and a relatively nice price of $899. In some countries, it’s is called the Yoga Slim 7. We look at the AMD Ryzen 7 model with 8 cores and phenomenal performance for 14.9mm Ultrabook. Lenovo currently lists the laptop with the Ryzen 7 4700U, Radeon graphics, 8GB DDR4 4266MHz RAM and a 512GB SSD on their site, but we have a slightly higher end version with the Ryzen 7 4800U and 16GB RAM. The laptop has a pleasing full HD display, aluminum casing, Windows Hello IR camera with presence detection, a white backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 6 and a 720p webcam. Lenovo also offers an Intel version that starts at $1,050.

When Intel unwraps its 11th-gen “Tiger Lake” CPUs next week, we’ll witness an epic battle for the soul of thin and light laptops unlike any we have ever seen before. Our earlier prediction that Tiger Lake will lose against Ryzen 4000 in multi-threaded tasks stays the same. Well, kind of. After seeing the Ryzen 7 4800U’s results, we actually think it’ll be a total blowout in multi-threaded performance now. Graphics, however, might just be closer than we expected. And one area Tiger Lake is likely to win big is single-threaded performance, which is actually probably more important for most of what it is done in a small laptop.

We wish the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 had more staying power in terms of battery life, and we wouldn’t have minded faster burst performance, along with a touchscreen. Still, with its Core i5 Ice Lake CPU, discrete MX350 graphics, fingerprint and facial biometrics, Thunderbolt 3 port, and Atmos sound, the IdeaPad Slim 7 delivers an impressive arsenal of productivity tools for the price, as long as you can live without all-day battery life.

With its beautiful display, pretty good battery life and decent performance, the Lenovo IdeaPad 7i Slim Pro is a pretty solid ultraportable for not a ton of money. It should serve you well as a daily driver for work if you can overlook the lack of port variety, awful webcam, and disappointing speaker performance. If you want something that may be able to provide you with a little more, you can always check out the Dell Inspiron 14, which has the added value of being a 2-in-1 so you can fold the keyboard around to turn it into a (bulky) tablet. If you don’t mind a smaller screen, the Dell XPS 13 is one of our favorite ultraportables, and if you don’t splurge for the (admittedly excellent) OLED display option you can get an XPS 13 for roughly the same price as Lenovo’s IdeaPad 7i Slim Pro.

Among Lenovo's multiple laptop brands, the IdeaPad family is decidedly the one designed for consumers: people who want decent performance at a reasonable price. Consider, then, this laptop a paragon for the pickier members of that crowd. With a 14-inch touch-enabled display, a comfortable keyboard, an Evo-certified Intel Core i7 11th Generation CPU, and the latest Windows 11 operating system, the IdeaPad Slim 7i Pro ultraportable ($1,199 as tested) is a slick mainstream machine at a bit of a premium price, and quite capable for everyday tasks. It's got the looks, and the performance; what it doesn't, and what holds it back from higher honors, is battery life.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7i Pro is a really good laptop that has a mix of pros and cons. Mostly, the display is beautiful. It’s high-resolution and high refresh rate. I assume that we’ll see more high refresh rate screens in the world of Windows, but for now, it’s pretty rare. At the least, it’s worth checking out; I think you’ll be surprised at how much you like it. It does have its share of shortcomings though. The high resolution and refresh rate does affect the battery, and combined with the 35W processor, you’ll want to have the charger with you. It’s also got a 720p webcam, which is unacceptable in the age of working from home. But the overall experience is just so good. It’s got a phenomenal keyboard, a beautiful display, solid build quality, and proper ports. With the 35W processor, you can connect an external GPU without feeling a lag in CPU performance. It’s pretty great.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7i Pro is positioned as a midrange laptop, but priced like a premium machine, and fortunately, it lives up to the latter. Its build quality is slightly lacking and its battery life is mediocre, but its performance is solid and its display is excellent for the class of machine. It’s a good-looking laptop that’s reasonably sized and attractive, if simply designed. The extra features, such as the user presence detection technology, are welcome additions that add value. It’s also just a good reminder of how absurdly expensive some other well-built laptops are getting. The cheapest 14-inch ThinkPad X1 Yoga is going for several hundred dollars more than this Slim model, and I’d much rather use the IdeaPad any day — while the Yoga has a number of security features and design staples that are worth a lot of money for its customer base, I legitimately think the IdeaPad’s bigger and better screen provides more benefit to your average consumer. And while the Slim 7 Pro may be hard to find, it’s worth remembering that if you’re considering buying the ThinkPads, MacBooks, and XPS’s of the world, you should make sure you’re not overlooking decent devices that could meet your needs at lower price points.

Here’s the deal. If you’re looking for a laptop that’s aimed at creators, you have to think about what you want to spend. If you’re a professional that can afford to spend a bit more, you should buy something with an Intel processor. If you’re a hobbyist or just starting out, AMD Ryzen could be better for you. The big thing to consider is that performance takes nearly a 30% hit when you’re not connected to power.

At $1,011, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 Pro is a real bargain among full-sized laptops, with a handsome 16-inch, 16:10 aspect ratio touch screen, a speedy CPU, a comfortable keyboard, ample memory, and a roomy solid-state drive. It's not a blazing gaming rig or mobile workstation, but it doesn't pretend to be. Its biggest negative is that it may be hard to find—during our review, it sold out and was marked "Temporarily Unavailable" on Lenovo's site. Here's hoping it comes back soon and Lenovo resists the temptation to boost the sticker when it realizes it has a winner on its hands.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 Pro is a welcome addition to the 16-inch laptop family. It’s well-built, reasonably thin and light, and fast enough for demanding productivity users and less demanding creators alike. And the display stands out for its brightness, contrast, and 120Hz refresh rate. Considering the $1,011 price, this is one heck of a value. The biggest caveat with the IdeaPad Slim 7 Pro, and this applies to any laptop purchased right now, is that it’s a little behind the curve in the CPU department. With AMD’s Ryzen 6000 series coming this year, we’re in a bit of a transition period. Of course, we have no idea how long it will take for the new chip to make it to laptops like this one, and the IdeaPad Slim 7 Pro is fast enough that it’s well worth buying today.
