Elegant and thin. Inspired by the shape of an elegantly slim book, Lenovo presents the IdeaPad U260 subnotebook with an exceptional 12.5 inch display, Intel Core i5 Arrandale CPU, and integrated graphics unit. The 4 cell battery with a meager 39 Watt hours does appear to be a mobility bottleneck though.

With that in mind, we have trouble recommending the Lenovo U260. It's one of the nicer laptops we've seen and the lack of features and dated performance wouldn't matter if it was £200 cheaper. But as it is, we'd caution you to look elsewhere for an ultraportable laptop with more on offer.

Lenovo has slipped into the gap between 13.3-inch ultras and 11.6-inch laptops. Close to the Dell Vostro V130 and nice to look at, this model is ultra-slim and light but lacks enough battery life (2h15) to make it viable to take on long outings. You'll find much more powerful models with longer battery life (Asus U36SD and Acer X3830T) for the same price.

Performance with the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 was pretty good, but it wasn't as good as some other similar models. The CPU is probably a little underpowered and the slower hard drive doesn't help either. However for most tasks, like the ones that most business and average people would be doing with this laptop, it does very good.

The U260 combines Lenovo's traditional strengths with a new-found sense of style. It's an average performer for overall, but its lack of distinction in that respect is more than compensated for by top-of-the-line ergonomics. My main disappointment is that Lenovo doesn't offer an option for a faster hard-disk drive or solid-state drive, which would do much to improve performance. Otherwise, this ultraportable just feels right to me. I recommend that you put the IdeaPad U260 to the test before buying something else.

Is the world ready for an ultraportable with a 12.5-inch display? Yes. Especially one that's as elegantly designed as the IdeaPad U260. This truly is one of the best-looking--and best feeling--ultraportables money can buy. The only significant trade-off is the limited battery life. For about $1,049, 4 hours is not enough endurance for us. In this price range we prefer the 11-inch MacBook Air ($999), which pairs Nvidia graphics with longer battery life in a sleeker design. Or you could try the Acer Aspire Timeline X1830T, which doesn't hold a candle to the U260's design but provides a faster Core i7 CPU and more unplugged time. Nevertheless, the IdeaPad U260 makes a style statement and backs it up with plenty of speed and comfort.

If you’re a Windows sort of person, and want a tiny computer to bring with you on a trip – this is the one. This is exactly what you’re going to want. If you plan on being in the field without portable power or a wall plug for hours on end, maybe consider something else. This computer takes into account the fact that Apple is attempting to rock the ultraportable market with their MacBook Air and slams directly into it with a completely reasonably sized (small, but not tiny) notebook with a completely unique feel on the outside and the in. Starting at $899 it appears to me to be right in the correct range for cost. Uniqueness, lack of bloatware, relatively decent experience for how small a computer it is, comfortable physically. Well played, Lenovo.

When it comes to design in ultraportables, it's hard to top Apple's MacBook Air. That doesn't stop competitors from trying, though. The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is a bold, high-design 12.5-inch laptop that's thin, light, and very easy on the eye. The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is a sleekly designed, beautifully constructed 12-inch ultraportable; it's just a shame its world-class looks are undermined by an underperforming battery.

How much are you willing to sacrifice for love? If you're anything like us, you're absolutely smitten with the U260's metal build, soft leather palm rest, brushed glass touchpad, and the fact that it packs Core i5 power in such a thin shell. Our first observations center around the look and feel of the device which gives off a very premium vibe, represented in the $1,099 price tag. The cover is made of a magnesium-aluminum alloy, but it’s not as bare feeling as the aluminum case of the MacBook Air. Instead it feels as if there’s a tiny bit of coating overlaid which gives it a very nice feel. This carries over to the palmrest which actually feels very high end, almost leather-ish or like the cover on a nice old book.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is a nice notebook for general business or personal use. It's lightweight enough to be carried around all day, the display and keyboard are big enough for most general activities -- and if you want a larger display and/or keyboard, you need to be prepared to spend more or carry heavier. The machine has the performance you'll "need" but lacks the knock out punch of more powerful multimedia notebooks. Enterprise and other business users may want to look instead at Lenovo's ThinkPad family for the additional business-oriented features, of course -- Windows 7 Professional, for one. And the three-to-four-hour battery life may be a showstopper; I've enjoyed using this machine, but that unimpressive battery life is enough to make me keep window-shopping.

I have to confess feeling a bit conflicted while writing this review. One one hand I honestly believe this is the most attractive consumer laptop that Lenovo has ever produced. More to the point, the IdeaPad U260 is one of the nicest feeling notebook PCs I've had the pleasure of using. On the other hand, the U260 is plagued by design compomises, weak performance and a price tag that makes most average consumers ask, "Why not buy a MacBook instead?" The combination of the average Intel Core i5 processor with a slow hard drive and weak Intel integrated graphics translates into less than impressive performance across the board. The lack of high-speed ports, an expansion slot, or a media card reader means consumers can't take advantage of the newest, fastest external storage options and have to buy accessories like USB card readers to use this notebook with their digital cameras. At the end of the day the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is a gorgeous laptop that grabs your attention at first glance and then makes you lose interest after you take a closer look. For the current street price of $999-$1,199 it's hard to recommend this over a similarly priced MacBook Air or MacBook.

The IdeaPad u260 is a beautiful notebook that shows just what PC makers can do when they pay attention to design, but unfortunately on the u260 that focus comes at the price of keyboard compromises and poor battery life. The u260 is a notebook that looks really good and if that’s important to you then this is still a notebook to consider — otherwise you may want to wait to see if Lenovo can address some of these issues in a future version of the u260. The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 comes with the option of an Intel Core i3 or Core i5 processor and is available in Mocha and Clementine colors. The IdeaPad U260 Core i5 models are available from Lenovo for $899 right now and the u260 can also be found on Amazon for the same price.

With apologies to Cole Porter, if there were one word to best describe the design of the $999 Lenovo IdeaPad U260 ultraportable laptop, it would have to be “swellegant.” This ultraportable has an super-svelte design and good office-app performance for its price. Its anemic battery—which you can't swap out—will trip up serious travelers, however.

We don't break down our star ratings into categories, but if we did, the IdeaPad U260 would get a perfect 5 for design and quality and a 3 for horsepower and features. We love a beautiful and light machine as much as the next designer-clad geek, but we do weight performance and features above good looks and a fine build. So we rate the notebook as the best Windows alternative to the MacBook Air we've seen so far, but it's a little lacking on the ultramobile front. We wish for more battery life and a 3rd USB port as well as a card reader. And it's a shame that Lenovo doesn't offer this high end showcase notebook with a Core i7 ULV. Complaints aside, the U260 is a more than adequate performer that rips through business work as well as streaming video. It's truly in the notebook class being much, much, much faster than a netbook and a better performer than last year's Intel SU series-based ultraportables. It should age well in terms of real world performance and only those who obsess on specs will find it wanting after a year. And the display, keyboard and trackpad are simply marvelous.

With its unique 'folio' design and soft-touch finish, Lenovo's thin and light IdeaPad U260 is one of the most attractive (12.5in) laptops going. However, despite nice ergonomics and a good matt screen, its last-generation CPU and GPU hold it back, connectivity is a bit disappointing and battery life is nothing special. However, considering you get a 128GB SSD for its sub-£800 asking price, if you won't be subjecting it to heavy workloads it's still a decent buy.

Given the attention to detail Lenovo lavished on this laptop, it’s unfortunate that the battery life results are so poor. This is the only flaw with the laptop, but it’s one that can’t be ignored given that it is an ultraportable. If not for this issue, the U260 would have easily qualified for an editor’s choice award. This is a conclusion I also came to when reviewing the T410s, which suffered from the same drawbacks as the U260. If Lenovo can figure out how to squeeze larger batteries into these slim and light laptops, it will have some class-leading products on its hands. For now, however, the U260 is a bit of a fashion statement. It’s beautiful, exquisitely constructed, and great to use – but lacking the expected endurance.

Lenovo's IdeaPad U260 offers a very compact and stylish system. It offers a very good screen with anti-glare coating and excellent keyboard and trackpad. All of these features are tempered though by the below average battery life from the smaller battery to keep the weight and size down. It also has very limited external peripheral connectivity.

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is a very well designed laptop that not only looks beautiful but also feels solid in its construction. It’s not the fastest performer, but it isn’t intended to be. It’s great for everyday stuff like creating documents, surfing the web and emails but not one you’d use for playing video games or render 3D models. Priced at AED 2,999 it is quite competitive for a notebook with a premium design.
