This gen8 Lenovo Legion Pro 7i is a mixed bag. It's still a good high-tier laptop with powerful components and solid performance in demanding loads, as well as an ergonomic utilitarian design. It's also among the more competitvely priced options in its class. But at the same time, compromises were made with this series, as this runs toasty on the high-power profiles and is only offered with a standad-gamut screen, among others.

While the latest Lenovo Legion Pro 7i looks like a simple refresh for 2023, the move to the latest Intel and Nvidia hardware marks a major improvement in capability for gaming and everything else. The tried-and-true design may look the same, but Nvidia's gaming chops are better than ever before (especially when DLSS 3 is supported in a given game), and battery life got a decent improvement, even if it still has room for more. Throw in extras—like the per-key lighting on the keyboard and niche features like Tobii headtracking—and you have a fantastic premium-level mobile PC gaming rig. We won't act as if this laptop isn't expensive (nearly $3,000), but it's a lot cheaper than the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 and the ultra-pricey MSI Titan GT77 (2023). It's still not cheap, but it's a heck of a lot more affordable than the nearly $5,000 price that this level of performance has commanded recently. That's enough for the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8 to replace the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE as our favorite 16-inch gaming laptop, earning it our Editors' Choice award.

This notebook’s display covers 98% of the sRGB color gamut and features accurate color representation thanks to our Gaming and Web design profile. Furthermore, the 240Hz refresh rate has quick pixel response times. This ensures a really smooth image, even in fast-paced games. Now, how many laptops do you know that have a total of 6 USB ports? Well, this one does, and one of them is a Thunderbolt 4 connector. The absence of an SD card reader is disappointing, but not unexpected, given the history of Legion devices in recent years. All in all, the Legion Pro 7 (16″, 2023) is a really good gaming machine. As with every other laptop out there, it has its downsides, one of which is its price. However, it is probably the most down-to-earth-looking gaming notebook in this segment of the market.

As the next-gen GPUs are upon us, there are plenty of gaming laptops releasing this year that are already taking advantage of the powerful mobile cards. The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i is one of them, outfitted with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU, a 13th-gen Intel Core i9-13900KF, 32 GB DDR5-5600MHz RAM, and 1 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 TLC storage. This is an absolute beast of a gaming laptop, made to be a desktop replacement with its extremely high specs and gaming performance. Design-wise, this is a visually below-average laptop. It comes in black, the most overused color in the market, and thick and bulky, which is par for the course for most desktop replacements. Due to the large screen size and thickness to accommodate the RTX 4080 inside, it’s pretty heavy to lug around as well. There is a slight cool factor in the way the chassis is cute, lending it a sci-fi aesthetic that saves it from being downright ugly. However, its build quality is pretty high not to mention eco-friendly, with a metal chassis made of 50% recycled aluminum on the bottom cover and 30% post-consumer recycled polymers on the top cover.

At the retail price of S$5,299, the Lenovo Legion Pro7i, powered by Intel Core i9-13900HX with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 laptop GPU, 32GB DDR5 memory, 1TB SSD storage and preloaded with Windows 11 Home 64-bit, isn’t the souped up machine that professionals might want, but that would likely cost twice as much for a lot less comparable increase in performance. The price is steep compared to an ultraportable, but its in the price range of a MacBook Pro 16 and this one can run far more games. If you’re looking for a machine that handles games better than an ultrabook, and want to keep spending down, this Pro7i offers great features and performance for its price.

I was more impressed with how the Legion Pro 7i tackled our productivity and creative benchmarks than I was with its gaming performance. It’s in second place behind the 2023 MSI GT77 Titan, which costs $2,000 more, so I’m not really complaining. If you want a gaming laptop that performs well and that can be used in non-gaming environments without standing out, then the Legion Pro 7i is a great choice. The fact that it’s reasonably affordable, given the components inside, is just icing on the cake.

The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i is the company’s flagship gaming laptop, offering up the highest-end components and a design that’s tuned for gaming. The latest model sports a very fast Intel 13th-gen Raptor Lake CPU and a high-end Nvidia GPU, for a price that’s quite reasonable compared to much of the competition. It’s a well-built, conservatively styled laptop that won’t appeal directly to gamers, but will have wider appeal among those who want to use its power for productivity and creative tasks. And the Legion Pro 7i has plenty of that — power — and is one of the fastest laptops we’ve yet tested. The competition is on its way, but for now, the Legion Pro 7i is near the top of the gaming laptop leaderboard.
