Naturally, this only works when you're plugged in. When you're running on batteries it runs at the same clock speed but puts performance ahead of battery life, so screen brightness is typically higher. To deal with the extra power, you'll notice the fan kicks in to life and stays on for the duration you run Turbo Boost. The 80GB hard drive is a standard laptop hard disc that has been partitioned into two.

The MSI Wind U100, despite the new model designation, is still the same netbook that launched last summer in response to the Eee PC. While the chassis and basic design hasn't changed much, the Wind has picked up a few handy updates over the last couple months that help keep it competitive with the onslaught of new netbook offerings. The Wind offers a sturdy chassis that will take your constant handling in stride. The system is well built and covered in high quality paint that is very fingerprint resistant. Although the design comes off a bit bland, it's still a pretty good looking machine that will look the part in any situation, boardroom or coffee shop. While the original specs that called for an 80GB hard drive with 3-cell battery can still be found, most Winds on sale today pack 160GB and a beefier 6-cell unit.

Combined with the more attractive choice of colours, free carry bag in the box, and an extended warranty to 2 years, we feel the original MSI Wind U100 is not just the first Wind, it also breezes into first place.

It's no secret that the key to the Eee PC 1000H's current A List status is its tremendous six-hour battery life, three times that of its rivals. We know it, you know it, and MSI certainly knows it - hence the belated introduction of the MSI Wind U100-291UK, now with the all-important six-cell battery.
A vast improvement that brings it almost in line with the Eee PC 1000H - if the price falls the Wind may just edge it.

There are some solid reasons to consider MSI's Wind. It's small and fairly light (about 1kg), and it's sturdy enough to take a beating. But other solidly-built mini-notebooks are just around the corner, including Lenovo's S10 and probably an entry from Dell this Autumn. If you can't wait, the MSI Wind is a solid recommendation to buy now.

What will make or break a netbook for most consumers is the overall feel and design of the laptop. The MSI Wind U100 is very well laid out and designed to make it extremely portable but still easy to use. The 3-cell battery does limit its overall running time however.

Move over, Asus: MSI has skipped the imitation game that most other manufacturers have played so far and actually bested the Eee with the Wind. Its $550 price tag may make it $150 more than the original Eee, but the refinement and features MSI has added make it well worth the premium, especially when Asus’ 10-inch Eee runs for $700. For the moment, MSI’s Wind definitively blows away the competition.

As if the ultramobile PC space weren't already crowded enough, MSI Computer Corp. has blown in with its Wind UMPC. MSI basically (though not literally) took the ASUS EeePC 900, improved it, and slapped its own branding onto it. The Wind doesn't go out of its way to differentiate itself from the crowd, but it's still a top-tier UMPC in many ways.
Out of all the UMPCs available in the market, the MSI Wind is the best deal.

Category of small cheap notebooks became very popular and there is no wonder why most of big brands want a piece of cake for themselves. But Asus got all of them off-guard. Because of that we’ve been waiting rather long for Eee’s true rival . We’ve already mentioned MSI’s agility which allowed them again to be first with new product on market. Their trump card wears name Wind and model that InsideHW had tested is MSI Wind U100. Even if we don’t pay much attention, during notebook tests, on package we just cannot overlook it this time. Picture that was used for package was chosen in that manner so that your new notebook looks like it came with a gift bow. Perfect package choice for this “little guy”.

The MSI Wind, the latest small computer in the mini-notebook trend started by Asus, is around the same size as the Asus Eee PC 900 and has the same white pearlescent case, making us wonder if MSI, like Asus, seems to be pitching its mini-notebook a handy handbag companion for women. However, the similarities between the Wind and its competitors end there. A small and light ultra mobile PC, which looks and performs better than some of its rivals.

There's a lot to like about the MSI Wind. It's a great design and benefits from an excellent keyboard and screen, but it's let down by battery life that cannot compete with the Eee PC 901 and undercut by a re-branded version, making you think twice. It's still a good machine and if you're happy to trade battery life for a better keyboard, or purchase a separate battery, it's still worth serious consideration, but it just misses out on a wholehearted recommendation.

If you’ve been holding off buying a netbook until the dust has settled, the good news is that you can reach for your credit card now. Though not quite as faithful a netbook as the Acer Aspire One or Eee PC 701, the MSI Wind takes extends the idea to its sensible limit, though the cheaper, rebadged Advent 4211 is better value.

The MSI Wind is arguably the best netbook on the market. It's stylish, it's easy to type on and it's quick. So, the Wind is, in the main, the breath of fresh air we'd hoped for all along. It looks good, feels good and its ergonomics are by far the best of the mini-laptop bunch. Its pricing brings it dangerously close to fully-fledged laptops, and leaves the value-for-money crown firmly in the Acer Aspire one's possession, but for less than a quarter of the Sony VGN-TZ31's cost, you simply cannot buy a better ultraportable.

With the competition largely failing to deliver, the Wind’s main rival remains the Asus Eee PC 901. As we mentioned in our review of the 901, the specifications and performance are very similar, and both machines have key advantages. If battery life tops your needs, the 901’s standard six-cell unit is likely to swing things in its favour. If outright battery life isn’t a factor, however, or you don’t mind shelling out for an optional six-cell battery, then the MSI is actually the better laptop. The keyboard is a lot more comfortable, with bigger keys and a more responsive action. It’s close then, but with quality, usability and one of the best screens also in its favour, we believe the MSI Wind is arguably the most complete sub-notebook currently available.

If there were a Survivor: The Mini-Notebook series, and each of the ultra–low-cost notebooks were incrementally eliminated, the MSI Wind NB would be the one left standing. Unlike its competitors, the Wind NB offers the complete package, including an adult-size keyboard, a larger 10-inch screen, and a very capable Atom processor. We believe that a lot of people who never had a notebook will consider buying Wind PC U100. It is small and light, it has all you need from a notebook and it is as mobile as it gets. The battery life is not great, but it is still within acceptable levels. The 80GB Western Digital drive really helps a lot and 1GB of memory is enough for just about anything a normal notebook user might need. Realtek W-LAN uses Windows W-LAN manager; that is a bit primitive, as it forces you to type the password twice but it works quite well. We do believe that W-LAN can and will get a bit faster, but at least it works stable in four W-LAN environments we tested. Plastic is the biggest minus, as it leaves greasy fingerprint trails all over the small and cute case, but it’s nothing that a nice wipeoff cannot solve. From a design point, MSI deserves 9.5 of 10. We showed the machine to a dozen computer enthusiasts and non-geeks, including a few girls, and they all agree that this notebook looks great.

A strong choice, but bettered by PC World's larger, re-branded Advent. MSI made a large splash in the laptop market when it released the Wind U100, the first 10-inch netbook. The U90 uses the same chassis but, despite its lower price, the smaller screen and reduced storage fail to pack the punch of its predecessor. There's no denying that the MSI Wind U90 is an impressive netbook on its own merits, but when compared to the rebranded Advent 4211c, it fails to match up. You may well find therefore that you get more for your money by choosing PC World's option instead.

We sad that U90 is almost identical to U100 model which means that some differences are present. Exclusion of Windows XP and smaller display are not enough to make a significant price and functional difference. Because of that U90 lacks also Bluetooth adapter. Other characteristics are identical to model U100 which can be sad for our impressions too. Keyboard is solid and the biggest flaw still remains: small touchpad - sometimes it is hard to locate keys that are below touchpad. With U90 you will get a bag that is, at our surprise, colored in white. Although it looks nice we got impression that black one would suite this model better and any stains would be less noticeable.

The MSI Wind U90X’s keyboard is the largest and most comfortable of any 8.9-inch mini-notebook on the market, and we like its spacious hard drive. However, opting for the SUSE Linux operating system was a mistake, and therefore we don’t recommend the Wind U90X over the Acer Aspire one or the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. While its $369 price is appealing, only those willing to replace the SUSE OS with a version of Windows or another flavor of Linux will find the Wind U90X to be a decent 8.9-inch netbook.

From a strictly technical perspective, the MSI Wind NB U120H is a welcome update to a successful formula. Nothing has really suffered in this version, and anyone who purchases the netbook will be happy with it. The real problem here is money. Sure, they added 3.5G, but they also added to the price tag. The netbook will stay alive for a good 3 hours, which is decent for standard use, but you end up paying for a 6-cell battery that should really be giving you two or three more hours of work time. Considering that the Wind U100 only costs $350 at Best Buy right now, I doubt it will be worth it to consumers to spend $250 more just for mobile connectivity.

The MSI Wind U120 isn't so much as an upgraded 10-inch netbook from the company but more of a redesign. The case has more squared corners and mixed color scheme that give it a sleek design. Many of the features remain the same though including the very well designed keyboard that is comfortable to use. The main purpose of the redesign was to reduce costs and the Wind U120 is very affordable, but that price also comes with RAM that can't be upgraded and a battery life that is on the lower end of six cell netbook models.

An update to the original MSI Wind, the U120 boasts a snazzier chassis and an aggressive price—but the competition has caught up. MSI skyrocketed to the top of the mini-notebook field last June when netbooks with 10-inch displays were rare and when no other netbook, regardless of size, could tout more than five hours of battery life. The MSI Wind U120 is a solid netbook with a comfortable keyboard and a more stylish design than its predecessor. It’s also more aggressively priced. At $379, the U120 costs $70 less than the U100. However, the older U100 lasts 45 minutes longer on a charge, and both the Samsung NC10 ($449) and the HP Mini 2140 ($529) last more than 2 hours longer, although both systems are more expensive. If you care more about price than endurance, then the U120 is worth considering.

Built firmly on the foundations laid down by the original Wind, MSI's new netbook baby, the Wind U120H, is more of the same, but with a slight twist. Everything that was good about the erstwhile MSI netbook standard-bearer is here too, including super-bright screen, decent keyboard and above-average build quality. MSI adds to this by including an HSDPA card, internally, that when paired with an appropriate SIM, provides go-anywhere connectivity. The Wind U120H represents a minor update from the incumbent. It's better in some ways (HSDPA) but not as good in some (lack of RAM expandability), but choice is always a good thing for the consumer.

It has a very long battery life, 802.11n wireless networking (Ralink 1t2r), Intel GMA 500 graphics, and two storage devices: a solid-state drive and a conventional spinning hard drive. As far as netbooks go, the MSI Wind U115 is a very interesting proposition but it's not without its problems. For travellers — or anyone who wants to work for long periods of time away from a power outlet — the MSI Wind U115 is perfect. Its battery life is the longest we've seen in an Intel Atom-based netbook, lasting well over five hours. We also like the inclusion of an SSD drive, but we wish it had a larger storage capacity.

MSI Wind U115 Hybrid is a netbook that you’ll instantly like, most of all for its battery life lasting anywhere from 5 to 11 hours, depending on the workload. MSI Wind U115 seems perfect for work on long journeys or a day on the beach. Despite its small form factor that might discourage anyone from typing, U115’s keyboard is large enough to provide comfortable work even after a few hours of typing. The hybrid combination of SSD and HDD storage devices has its pros, most evident in long battery life, but such a thing always reflects on the price. Unfortunately, SSD pricing is still pretty high, so the U115 comes with only an 8GB SSD.

MSI Wind U115 Hybrid brings both speed and size to netbook storage. MSI's Wind netbooks have been well received and extensively rebranded by many manufacturers, including Medion and Advent. MSI now brings unique storage and outstanding mobility with its own-brand Wind U115 Hybrid. With its unique storage and exceptional mobility, the Wind U115 Hybrid is one of the best netbooks around. Its high-price is off-putting though, so carefully consider your needs and budget.

The MSI Wind U115 Hybrid has a good screen, relatively spacious keyboard and amazing battery life, thanks to its SSD and HDD combination. But, given its tired-looking design and rather average performance in areas other than battery life, we're not sure it's worth the £150 premium over most other netbooks.

Taking a cue from automakers, MSI has created the industry's first hybrid netbook. Like a Honda Prius, the MSI Wind U115 Hybrid aims to run longer by pairing a power-saving technology with a traditional one—in this case, a solid-state drive (SSD) and a standard hard drive. It's an interesting idea, but the results are mixed. While the battery life ranges from excellent to out-of-this-world, overall performance is just average. What's more, we encountered a few technical glitches that made for a frustrating experience. Though its stellar battery life will appeal to road warriors, the pricey, bulky MSI Wind U115 Hybrid suffers from a few debilitating flaws that are hard to overlook.

All of which was not as good as MSI claims, but it’s still a worthy operational duration for a computer of this nature. We like the concept behind the Eco mode with its dual hard drives, only it wasn’t as easy to invoke. The only way of enabling this feature was from a Function Key, where as soon as the computer was rebooted all the settings were lost. Seeing as Windows does like a reboot every now and then, this could be bothersome in the long run. A better idea would be to use or run all this from a profile, which is sadly missing here and very much needed we feel.

Innovation can be a double-edged sword. While we've been frank in our criticism of netbooks for their lack of just that, it's as much a reflection of the sector and its demands as the strategy of any manufacturer - when you're trying to make low-cost devices there isn't a great deal of wiggle room! MSI should be praised for the idea of a hybrid netbook and the battery life results demonstrate that this part of the U115 is a success. However, despite a decent feature set, £450 is far too much to ask for an otherwise uninspiring netbook.

There's no denying that the U115 offers extraordinarily long battery life and its performance scores are up there with some of the best SCCs we've seen. The combination of both SSD and HDD in one unit is a clever trick, so you can use each storage medium for what it does best. The big problem with the U115, though, is its price. Even if it was just £50 cheaper, it'd be much more compelling. It doesn't have the looks to pull off a premium price tag and although it's a good performer, it's verging into traditional laptop territory.

All-in-one PCs have been around for ages and it’s not hard to understand their appeal. They feature the wire-free tidiness of a laptop, combined with the big screen of a desktop PC. The concept sustains many admirers, with Apple’s iMac range doing very well indeed with just such a form factor. This AE1900 is an attractively designed touchscreen PC, which is easy to use and looks good to boot. However, it’s not really powerful enough for heavy duty computing or gaming and the screen resolution is quite low. It’s also running XP Home, which means no Media Center and no free upgrade to Windows 7.

And the bright screen is sure to win fans. But there are certainly netbooks out there that are lighter, easier to upgrade, and offer similar performance, even if they can’t quite match the battery life.

The MSI Wind U123 is essentially a slightly modified version of their U120 netbook. It shares the same exterior appearance, keyboard and trackpad design. The biggest difference is a move to a slightly faster Atom N280 processor and a 802.11n compatible wireless. While some models of the U123 comes with a 9-cell battery, the U123-019US uses a 6-cell battery which results in a below average running time compared to similarly netbooks. Still, at just $350, it is a very affordable netbook considering some of its features.

The original MSI Wind burst onto the scene in spectacular fashion, nabbing the first-ever Editors' Choice in the netbook category. Of course, it helped that this fledgling field wasn't the mob scene it is today. The Wind U123 (003US) ($385 street) is a nice follow-up, and it's full of life—battery life, that is. Its 87Wh battery is the biggest battery yet found on a netbook, though it was added at the expense of making this model look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame (though the hump is on the bottom). Overall the U123 could use more of a lift, as its performance scores fell well short of the competition, and everything else is just middle of the road. The only differentiating feature in the MSI Wind U123 (003US) netbook is the humongous battery, which sticks out like a sore thumb.

At first glance, the MSI Wind U123 looks to be just a restyled update of the Wind U100, a 2008 model that was one of the first 10.2-inch netbooks. Most of the changes are appreciated but not spectacular: The MSI Wind U123 sports a restyled chassis, as well as the slightly faster Intel Atom N280 processor that was introduced on the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. This netbook’s 12+ hours of battery life is impressive, but the competition offers better designs. The MSI Wind U110 is longest running netbook yet, but it’s design is stuck in the past. At $429, the U110 is $30 more expensive than the Ion-powered HP Mini 311, which offers better graphics and a larger screen (but less than half the battery life) and the Toshiba mini NB205 (N330BL), which has a better design, keyboard, and touchpad (but over 3 hours less juice).

In fact, we have to commend the MSI engineers for packing in so much tech and keeping it all running very cool and quiet.

In fact, we have to commend the MSI engineers for packing in so much tech and keeping it all running very cool and quiet.
