While you could argue that the Lumia 535's litany of flaws and disappointments are forgivable given the rock-bottom asking price, there's a raft of similarly priced Android models that are far better value. There's simply no reason to settle for this many compromises when other manufacturers are regularly churning out far more impressive devices at around the same price.

We're not sure how Microsoft's gone so wrong with the Lumia 535, but it remains one of the worst Windows phones we've ever tested. This is a shame, as it's just as well built as other Lumia phones and its funky set of colours offer a great alternative to the swathe of budget black and white Android phones available. Still, if you're set on getting a cheap Windows phone, the Lumia 630 is a much better buy than this poor first effort, as it's not only much quicker and easier to use, but it also has a much longer-lasting battery.

As an entry-level dual microSIM smartphone, the Microsoft Lumia 535 may seem appealing at first glance to business users on a budget. But its lack of 4G support and HD display means heavy multimedia users will miss out. When you take into consideration that the new Xiaomi Redmi 2 comes with dual-SIM 4G support, a HD display, and a more powerful chipset at a similar price, the Lumia 535 has quite a way to go before it is able to break into the budget market.

The Microsoft Lumia 535 has a good build, packs a large screen that, while it hasn't got the highest resolution, produces good colours and operates for the most part with ease, plus you get the full Windows Phone 8.1 experience. But to achieve the low point, sacrifices have to be made. There's no NFC for example, no faster AC/N Wi-Fi and no 4G.

The Lumia 535 is a well-priced phone that runs latest Windows Phone software. The user experience is mostly very good. However, the design is a bit of a let-down. Things get worse due to the disappointing video playback and 480p recording. Instead of spending Rs 8200 on the Lumia 535, it makes sense to go for the Lumia 630 and save some money. I know, you will have to compromise on RAM and front-facing camera, but the 630 feels much better than the 535. And if you're looking for a sub-10k phone for content consumption, you should consider the Yu Yureka or Asus Zenfone 5.

A budget phone with the specifications to match but an appealing aesthetic quality. If you’re looking for a cheap smartphone that performs basic tasks adequately enough then the Lumia 535 is worth considering. There are few better phones in the 535’s price There are few better phones in the 535’s price range but they do exist. On the plus side, at least it will still look good- even when it’s out of battery.

The Lumia 535 is an oversized budget phone, with a 5-inch display, good Windows 8.1 OS, a decent amount of storage and a microSD slot. It’s not the cheapest Microsoft phone, as the Lumia 435 is rolling out at €69, while the Lumia 532 cost around €79. As for the Lumia 535, the spec appears to justify the price and the phone looks and feels quite good for this particular segment. There are no advanced features, the resolution is quite low, and the main camera fails to impress.

The Microsoft Lumia 535 really impressed me with a good build quality, and the excellent number of free services. However the device has its problems – the camera isn’t amazing, and the operating system can appear sluggish at times. All of these problems can be forgiven though because for £90, this is a great device.

We're fans of Windows Phone 8.1 but the Lumia 535 compromises in too many areas to make it a bargain at £100. You're better off with a Motorola Moto E or - if you want 4G - the EE Kestrel.

Even though the Lumia 535 is a budget smartphone, we think that Microsoft should have equipped their first smartphone with a speedier chipset, and a better display. It does look like Microsoft did not take much effort to design the Lumia 535, except for a change in brand, familiar shape and specifications. The least Microsoft could do for now is optimize the Windows Phone 8.1 OS to run faster on the Lumia 535, with some camera performance improvements. Currently, the Microsoft Lumia 535 is currently sold for a price of 499AED, and we think its worth it for that price point.

The Lumia 535 is the first Microsoft branded handset and, unfortunately, the experience is poor compared to some of its Lumia predecessors. The poor touchscreen experience feels like a blast from the past, while the exterior finish isn't up to quite the same high standards. On paper, the 535 has plenty going for it. The low price, combined with a large display, the latest Windows Phone software, quad-core power and a pair of reasonable cameras, should make this a cracking device for those on a budget.

The Lumia 535 manages to deliver a good chunk of the Windows Phone 8.1 experience, for a measly cost of $169.99. Yes, there has been a lot of corner-cutting involved, which results in unimpressive looks, low screen resolution and bad viewing angles, below-average camera, and sub-par call quality. On the flip side, however, we have a 5-inch display with comparatively accurate colors, a smoothly-running Windows Phone system, the Office package, the full Cortana experience, and pretty good battery life. It is by no means a daily driver for experienced users, but we'd recommend it as an entry-level device for people who are OS-agnostic. It's also a good pickup for anyone who's interested in just trying out Windows Phone, but doesn't want to pull the trigger on one of the more expensive handsets.

It’s worth considering if you need a cheap, dual-SIM phone, but in its in single-SIM guise – as we’ll see it in the UK – it’s a hard sell. We like the cameras and the option of removable covers, but the fact that those covers (and the battery) can pop off when dropped is a serious design oversight.

An affordable, big-screen smartphone, with dual-SIM support at that, the Microsoft Lumia 535 looks like a package that's made to measure for the emerging markets. No wonder India was one of the first destinations confirmed. The phone has now been listed in the UK as well. Most likely, it's the single-SIM version. It's the kind of flexibility Redmond must have been looking for. The Lumia 535 is the first phone to wear the Microsoft logo and it will need all the exposure it can get.

It’s arguably the weakest link in Microsoft’s newly acquired Lumia lineup right now, despite the dual-SIM, large-screen experience it offers. If you want a taste of the Lumia brand, we wouldn’t dissuade you from the 535 entirely, but it might pay look further back into 2014 and grab the Lumia 635 or wait it out until the next handset hits.

The Lumia 535 isn't the flagship Microsoft smartphone we expected, but it is a very good example of what Windows Phone can offer in the affordable smartphone space. Featuring an iconic Lumia design and reasonable performance, coupled with the inherent enterprise and productivity features of Windows Phone 8.1, the Lumia 535 is a solid choice for any business looking for a mass rollout BYOD smartphone.

Additionally, Microsoft bundles a few interesting offers witih this phone as well. Microsoft's first Lumia smartphone is a bit of a mixed bag. It has small flaws in basic areas such as the plastic quality and the touchscreen experience. This doesn't bode well for the future of a range of phones that has always been known for stellar construction quality.

Right now there is only one choice: that of the Moto E. But come the new year when the Lumia 535 is in town you will have a tough choice. It is likely that the Lumia 535 will cost a little more. But it has better storage and camera, and a bigger (if not sharper) screen. These are both great cheap phones - your choice will likely depend on your preference of Windows Phone or Android. But even as an Android user I'd say that when the Lumia 535 is available it will likely be the better deal. Just. (See also: Moto E price, specs, release date, features.)

What I can say, however, is that the Lumia 535 is a promising budget phone. It looks great and has a decent, though not spectacular, feature set. My only serious concern is whether the Snapdragon 200 processor that held back the Lumia 530 will do the same here. We'll know more once we get a final version to test.
