Análisis para el Motorola Razr 2020 5G

Longtime subscribers, I apologize: much of what I’m about to say is stuff you’ve heard before. But when I contemplated canceling this video, many of you told me on Twitter that you’d like to see it anyway. And when I considered that I’m one of very few people who’s been consistently using the Motorola RAZR 5G for the past year and a half, I decided it was better to share that experience … even if I’ve already talked about it an awful lot in other videos. Whether you're nostalgic for the noughties, contemplating dipping your toe into the affordable side of the folding-phone pool, or just morbidly curious about the foldable that everyone seems to have forgotten – join me for Episode 13 of "Into The Fold" – a 2022 re-review of the Motorola RAZR 5G from 2020!

With only one speaker, and configured the way it is, the Razr 5G is not in the same class as the top non-folding flagships in the audio field. In playback, the phone has good attack at soft and nominal volumes and a good high-end register. But the lack of bass and low mids really hurt timbre performance. With only one speaker, the device was also weak in the spatial attribute, given its single speaker. As a recording device, the Razr’s volume and dynamics performances were decent, but the timbre was not great, with aggressive trebles and inconsistent midrange. The artifacts performance was subpar as well, with strong distortions and pumping, especially in high SPL environments.

The Motorola Razr 5G is the phone to get if you want one thing: a cool, foldable phone. It’s not nearly as versatile as other phones in its price bracket, but it’s perfectly capable of everyday use and does it with flair.

With the Razr 5G, you get a very usable exterior display, stock Android with a few extras, a very capable camera, and arguably the coolest design money can buy. And that last part is the only real downside as the phone launched with an insane $1,399 price tag. AT&T and T-Mobile carry it in-house, so that brings much more palatable monthly payments and typical carrier discounts. Verizon customers are stuck paying full price for the unlocked model, although Motorola has recently dropped the price to $1,199, which helps the sting a little.

Such a premium smartphone requires intelligent manufacturing. And that is exactly what Motorola has done. Apart from the smartphone itself, its retail box also has some unique features. For example, the plastic bottom of the box can be used as a volume booster, while the woven fabric box which contains all the accessories also doubles up as a sunglasses case! Talk about versatility! In conclusion, a price point of ₹1,24,999 means that the Moto Razr 5G won’t be a birthday gift for a 15-year-old kid. But what it definitely is, is one of the best-looking and best-performing business phones in the market, something which will immediately make people say, “The Boss is here.”

The Motorola Razr 2020 is undeniably better than its predecessor, solving the issues of limited storage and packing in 5G connectivity, while Motorola has tweaked the design to make it sleeker. On the other hand, this is still a restricted foldable phone because it doesn’t offer the best tech or design on the market – and when you’re spending well over $1,000 or £1,000 on a phone, you’re likely to be disappointed with that.

If you can accept the tradeoffs linked to a folding design, the Razr 5G is a decent effort from Motorola. This phone has bags of style and brings many practical advantages.

The Motorola runs Android 10 on the Snapdragon 765G with sub-6 5G, and it’s sold by AT&T, T-Mobile and unlocked in the US (unlocked is compatible with Verizon minus their mmWave 5G). It has a more durable design with better inner display protection a nearly silent stainless steel hinge, a 6.2” pOLED inner foldable display and an 800 x 600 glass OLED display that allows for full interaction with Android apps and features. It has a rear fingerprint scanner, 48MP rear and 20MP inner cameras, 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.

Motorola’s reinvigorated desire to bring back a classic was timed perfectly with the advent of foldable phones. In other words, the first Motorola Razr was an intriguing proof of concept that had some shortcomings but ultimately resulted in the first modern clamshell foldable phone. There’s a new Moto Razr out now, with 5G support and quite a few changes over the first Moto Razr that was unveiled in 2019, but are those changes enough to justify the $1399 price tag, especially with more competition lurking around the corner? Surely, the new Razr is a bit more affordable than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, but is it the better device?

To sum it up, although on the surface the Razr 5G looks like just an incremental upgrade, it feels like a significant one after using this phone for a short while. It is not as underpowered as its predecessor and is even more stylish. The vertical hinge also makes it relatively practical for everyday use. Sadly, at Rs. 1,24,999, it's still out of reach for most people, and its durability is yet to be established. If you are the kind of person who is bored of conventional phones, or who just loves attention, you might want to check out the Razr 5G.

However, the lower resolution main display, non-flagship processor as well as seemingly weaker cameras might be a deal-breaker for some, but we’ll have to see how those features fare in our full review before we pass our full verdict.

The new Motorola Razr 2020 addresses most of the issues I had with the Razr (2019) that came out in February. Overall it's a better phone. The new Razr gets a slew of upgraded specs, but lacks the top of the line ones found in the Motorola Edge Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. But neither of those phones can fold into something incredibly small.

It’s a tired trope of the tech world to say that “the sequel is what version one should have been.” But in the case of one of the most famous brands in mobile phone history, you can’t help but wonder what might have happened if last year’s Motorola Razr … had been the Motorola Razr 2020 instead.

Foldables are rapidly evolving, and just as the Galaxy Z Fold2 is superior to the original Fold, so too is the second Razr from Motorola. The Razr 5G from 2020 comes with higher-grade internals, improved materials, and mechanics, and software refinements to make better use of the external display.

The 2020 Razr might not be a device with mainstream appeal like the original from 15 years ago - plus the incoming glut of folding phone competitors is going to further challenge it - but nonetheless it's an exciting piece of technology that stands out for more of the right reasons than the wrong ones. But do you really need a folding phone? Probably not.

Motorola's Razr 5G is a welcome antidote to the monotony of the generic glass sandwich. It's an improvement upon its predecessor in every way, with faster performance, better cameras, longer battery life, 5G, and more. And with Motorola's enhancements to the Peek Display, it has the possibility to genuinely change the way you use your phone.

In November 2019, Motorola reinvented its legendary Moto Razr clamshell as a bleeding-edge foldable smartphone – a perfect storm of nostalgia and technological experimentation that had me immediately promise to buy a Razr of my own! But as a first-generation foldable, the reborn Razr carried compromises: it was very expensive, locked to a single carrier (Verizon), and early experiences with some review devices cast doubts upon its dependability. All it took was some stiff Samsung competition – in the form of the Galaxy Z Flip clamshell – to render the Razr 2019 something of an also-ran.
