The Nvidia Shield Tablet isn't just one of the first third party devices to get an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop - it's also a colossally powerful Android gaming tablet that leaves all its rivals in the dust. In terms of sheer gaming performance very few tablets can compete, and it can also be used to stream PC games from a laptop, PC or the Cloud.

As we are gamers at heart, the Nvidia Shield Tablet's primary focus appeals to us greatly. It has been designed by gamers for gamers, offering multiple ways to enjoy interactive entertainment in all its forms. Like all Android tablets, it is very capable with casual gaming too, but is equally as adept with more hardcore offerings.

The Nvidia Shield Tablet is by far the best tablet for gamers currently on the market. You can play high-quality Android games on your TV and turn your tablet into a micro-console that easily takes on the likes of Ouya. A brilliant gaming tablet that offers features no rival can touch. If you love gaming this is the tablet for you.

This isn't a portable gaming unit designed for the morning commute. If you're looking for that, you're better of going for the original Nvidia Shield console with its all-in-one gaming approach. What the Nvidia Shield Tablet is, however, is one of the best gaming tablets on the market right now. Still, high price point aside the Nvidia Shield Tablet enjoys major kudos for innovation and pure, unbridled power. And for that, it can have four of our finest stars.

The Shield Tablet really is the ultimate gaming tablet. There’s absolutely no question about that. Its insides are scarily fast, handling anything that even the latest Android games can throw at them with ease. Made-for-Shield games look amazing and play well, and PC game streaming is easy to set up and works seamlessly.

For sheer processing power, the Nvidia Shield Tablet blows other tablets out of the water, and it's loaded with useful features and connectivity options. It's genuinely impressive Nvidia could fit so much power and flexibility into an 8-inch tablet. Its $300 price tag might seem a bit high compared with a gaming device like a PS Vita or Nintendo 3DS, and even compared with a small Android tablet like a Google Nexus 7, but it offers more than enough functionality to make up for it.

The Surface Pro 3 is a great laptop first, OK tablet second. The Shield Tablet is a great streaming (video+games) box first, OK tablet second. Their dual roles don't come at the expense of dealbreaking compromises. That's an approach we're unlikely to see from Apple, even though it is beginning to open up its SDK to third-party accessories like Adobe's Ink and Slide and gamepads. The touch-first emphasis of iOS has kept iPad ahead as the best pure tablet experience, but the touch-only tablet category is shrinking as competitors continue to experiment and innovate--successfully.

Nvidia's approach may be slightly different this year, but the end result is the largely the same - if you're serious about Android gaming then this really is the only option in town. It offers console-standard graphics - along with a console-quality controller (albeit at an additional cost) - and a fantastic user experience. Add to this the ability to stream PC games and you've got a slate which will have serious players drooling with excitement; it's just a shame that the controller doesn't come as standard and that there are so few Android games out there that truly push the Shield Tablet to its absolute limits.

Nvidia's first Shield device was a good showcase of the Tegra 4 processor, but was limited as a dedicated gaming device. We test the new Shield Tablet and wireless controller, and show off its gaming and productivity features. We also evaluate the stylus, Nvidia's new Grid Beta, and Shield's built-in Twitch streaming capabilities. This ends up being one of our favorite Android tablets, with few compromises for all of its features.

Would we buy the Shield Tablet if we owned the original Shield (now renamed the Shield Portable)? Probably not. If we were looking for a new tablet and top-notch gaming performance was on the checklist, the Shield Tablet is easily the top contender today. We’d take it over the second-gen Nexus 7 in a heartbeat.

If you’re a big PC gamer and want to play games on an Android tablet, the Shield Tablet should really be on top of your list. It’s a good enough tablet to do all the regular tablet-y things like email, web browsing, and book reading, and it’s just so much faster and more capable for gaming than any other tablet that there really isn’t any competition. Nvidia does a great job with its tablet software, knowing exactly where to leave Android alone and where to add value.

We'd take it over the second-gen Nexus 7 in a heart beat. While we understand why Nvidia decided to separate the cover and controller to keep the prices down and avoid the Kinect factor, we think a bundled package with a small price break as an alternative would have been nice. All things considered though, consider us surprised. The Shield Tablet is pretty dang cool.

One of NVIDIA’s stated goals with the SHIELD tablet was to build the best tablet for mobile gamers. But to do so, they first had to build a good general-purpose tablet. We think NVIDIA has pulled it off. The build quality on the SHIELD tablet is top notch; the device is rigid, it looks great, and it feels good in the hand. The screen is also very good, the speakers sound great (for a tablet) and general usability is excellent.

The NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet effectively creates a second (or is it a third?) generation for Android tablets and indeed tablets in general with several key features. The ability to seamlessly connect with your PC wirelessly coupled with a robust, high quality build and a dedicated software support system from NVIDIA means the SHIELD Tablet is an undeniable winner.

I think it speaks volumes that the SHIELD Tablet is the first device I have reviewed where I didn’t think anything belonged in a “Not-so-Good” section. During my time with the unit, I didn’t come across a single gripe or pain point, which seems so rare these days. There is always something that I don’t care for in a device, but the SHIELD Tablet simply delivers exactly what it was made to, with no gimmicks and no bullsh*t.

Nvidia is open and honest about why it never brought the Nvidia Shield Android gaming device to the UK or, indeed, anywhere else outside of the US and Canada; it just wasn't good enough. Or, at least, by the time it became good enough something else was planned to supersede it. It was the company's first foray into manufacturing its own hardware and as such was an opportunity for Nvidia to learn more about such factors as the supply chain and distribution. It gained a lot of consumer product experience in the process and now feels ready to further its reach beyond its homeland borders.

On the topic of availability, all three components (including the SHIELD Cover, priced at $39), will be available in the US and Canada on July 29th. Europe, which got the shaft when it came to the SHIELD portable (understandably, I suppose – NVIDIA was diving in head-first where releasing its own direct product was concerned), will see availability in mid-August. Finally, we’ll see support for other regions pop up this fall. Overall, I’d say that this is an impressive showing by NVIDIA, and as a big fan of the SHIELD portable, this launch gives me big relief that the series didn’t become a one-off sort of deal. I look forward to seeing the SHIELD Tablet in action.

Nvidia's first Shield was a dedicated gaming handheld, but its new model is a high-end tablet with gaming accessories. We spend a little time with Nvidia's new Android gaming tablet, compare it to the original Shield portable, and give our thoughts on this device's appeal to PC and mobile gamers.

The Shield tablet definitely hits a niche. It might not have broad appeal, but for the gamers, it's the only choice out there if you want a solid gaming tablet. It also helps that the tablet comes at great price for such a powerful device. But the Shield tablet also loses some of the quirky charm of its spiritual predecessor. It feels like the Shield portable was an interesting direction for Nvidia to go in. It's not that Nvidia has taken a step back with the Shield Tablet, it's just gone down a different path ...
