When the Lumia 925 launched nearly a year ago, it was the best Windows Phone 8 handset around. Now widely available for around half its launch price (£240, down from £500) it's still a fantastic phone and a real bargain particularly since it's now available with Windows Phone 8.1 and will be getting a free upgrade to Windows 10 later this year.

The Lumia 925 improves on most aspects of the Lumia 920, which was already the best high-end Windows Phone 8 handset. We like the new, semi-metal chassis, the screen is superb and Nokia continues to impress with its innovative apps. If you're set on Windows Phone 8 this is the handset to buy, but, as with the 920, a lacklustre camera holds it back from an award.

For many average consumers, the Windows Phone platform has matured to the point that it satisfies most all key feature and usage model requirements. It handles basics quickly and smoothly, and it's intuitive and not immediately overwhelming in terms of settings and options.

Overall, the Nokia Lumia 925 is a capable, high-end smartphone that’s enjoyable to use. It crams core components from the Lumia 920 into a slimmer, lighter body, and has an improved camera along with fun extra features. We can’t, however, recommend a phone with battery life this poor, no matter how much we like it. And with its minimal changes over the 920, we can’t recommend it as an upgrade to its predecessor, despite the lighter, sleeker design.

With that said, we still enjoyed our time with the Lumia 925 as it felt quick and responsive for the most part, its screen offered some really impressive visuals and some of the included software, such as Nokia Smart Cam and HERE Maps, can easily compete with similar included software available on iOS and Android devices. The Windows Phone 8 platform is still not as widely adopted as iOS and Android, but things are slowly getting better, so keep that in mind if you’re seriously considering the Lumia 925.

In times when Samsung is criticised for its lack of design innovations and Apple is too cautious to experiment, Nokia has come up with yet another beautiful handset that looks nothing like the 920 or 928. The Lumia 925 ticks all the right boxes in terms of multimedia and productivity. The phone sports a fantastic screen and hard-to-beat camera. In 925, Nokia hasn’t just used Carl Zeiss lens to strengthen the specs sheet, but has actually taken advantage of it with cleverly designed apps. Thus proving that there are other ways to innovate and differentiate than just increasing the screen size or putting faster processors. All in all, it’s a top-notch phone, priced rightly at Rs 32,000.

The Nokia Lumia 925 is undeniably a great phone in its own right, but it's just not a big enough improvement over the Nokia Lumia 920 for there to be any reason to buy it if you own last year's model. Even if you don't, you might be better off buying the Nokia Lumia 920, since it's substantially cheaper at around £330/US$400/AU$420 SIM-free. Some call Windows Phone refreshing, but it does still come with limitations and lacks a certain fluidity that Nokia hasn't managed to fix with the Lumia 925. This is a good phone, sure, but as a flagship we need to have our socks blown off, and at last check they were still firmly on our feet.

The Nokia Lumia 925 is a newer, lighter, thinner flagship from the Finnish company, which houses pretty much the same insides as the Lumia 920. We take a look at what's different about the phone, what's the same all in an attempt to answer the question of whether it's worth upgrading to or not.

Nokia makes some stellar, well-built phones, and the 925 is no different than the rest of the gang. With its thinner design, high-resolution screen, and excellent camera capabilities, it’s a solid choice. It doesn't have one special feature to make it stand apart from its other siblings, other than the fact that it’s exclusively available at T-Mobile.

All the improvements that Nokia has made with the Lumia 925 still make it a good recommendation for those wanting a change from Android or iOS, and a no-brainer versus the rest of the high-end Windows Phone competition including Nokia’s own Lumia 920. But if you’re after a device with the absolute latest in technology in a polished, well-rounded package, it may be wiser to explore elsewhere.

Nokia has improved its flagship Lumia in most departments, with a better screen and slimmer, lighter design that’s just as affordable as high-end rivals. It’s not the best when it comes to demanding task though, but the real issue comes away from the mains – its battery life is just too poor to recommend.

The Nokia Lumia 925 is by far the best smartphone the brand has made yet, and of course that’s the conundrum one always faces when reviewing a Windows Phone 8 handset. Thanks to the camera, design and screen the Lumia 925 could well be afive-star product, however the inclusion of Windows Phone 8 does dampen the mood slightly due to the fact that while the app situation is improving the operating system itself is in need of some innovation.

Nokia’s answer to the Three Flagship Puzzle is that “it’s a different expression of what we delivered in the 920” – a reasonable description of bringing last year’s advanced technology to something most people can live with comfortably. It’s a whole lot more sleek and stylish than anything Nokia has produced since switching to Windows Phone, and classier than its plasticky-feeling rivals too.

The Lumia 925 refines the camera and location services debuted on Nokia's Lumia 920 smartphone to offer businesses the best Windows Phone experience possible. Were it not for the bizarre decision to remove wireless charging and downgrade its storage capacity to 16GB we'd have given it V3's hallowed five-star rating.

With Smart Camera coming to the rest of the Lumia range sharpish, this headline feature is no reason to fork out for the top of the range Lumia 925. But the new lighter, easier to handle design certainly is. Not only that but six months on from our Lumia 920 review and the Windows Phone 8 store is now much stronger in terms of its app line-up, so many of those crucial gaps, which might once have made app addicts waver, are being taken care of.

The Nokia Lumia 925 marks a slight change in direction for the Lumia series, adopting metal rather than sticking to series-staple polycarbonate. But otherwise it’s Lumia through and through, with a camera that offers unusually good low light performance, a phone that runs like a dream and bodywork that both looks and feels great.

It’s clear from the off: the Nokia Lumia 925 is the best model in Nokia’s range, and the best Windows Phone 8 device today. The design may have lost some of the colorful whimsy of its Lumia 920 cousin, but it has gained even better build quality, premium hand-feel, and handsome looks. The display is superb, performance the best we’ve seen with Microsoft’s platform, and the bundle of apps and services Nokia throws in continues to make for excellent value.

Nokia has fixed several of the biggest complaints leveled at the Lumia 920. In fact, the Lumia 925 feels like a Windows Phone pitched at people who think they're going to buy an Android phone next. The colors and design are more understated; the hardware is thinner and lighter, and arguably just as impressive as the HTC One or the iPhone.
