While ‘i’ devices battle it out for supremacy with Android there is another player in the field and that is Microsoft with Nokia to mention but one. This the a rather nice Windows phone here sent courtesy of Vodafone in the UK. A good service and a nice size phone from a company now controlled by Microsoft.

Taking on the role of Microsoft’s flagship smartphone offering is the task currently assigned to the Lumia 930 as it battles for market share against the dominant forces of the iPhone and numerous Android handsets. The Johnny-come-lately will certainly have a fight on its hands and there well could be tears before bedtime or maybe there is room for three heavyweight contenders within this particular market.

With every generation of Nokia 9 series, we see the best in class four-to-five incher that the company can come up with, and just like previous 900′s, the Lumia 930 is right now the best Nokia you can have without owning a 6 inch phone. But if we had to choose, we’d say to go for Nokia’s 6 inch 1520, because with practically identical technology under the hood AND the ability to expand on the storage plus better battery life, it beats the 930 hands down.

The Lumia 930 is not only Nokia’s best smartphone to date, but it’s also the best Windows Phone. Since the last standard-sized flagship, the Lumia 925, the company has managed to improve numerous aspects of the hardware to make it a true competitor to other smartphones on the market today.

We liked the Lumia Icon a lot, and we like the Lumia 930 even more. It doesn’t make any drastic improvements to key elements – the screen, camera, performance are all the same – but the inclusion of a wireless charger and Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box make it a better buy. It doesn’t have as much raw power as top iOS and Android phones, nor access to their wealth of apps, but it’s the best Windows Phone yet.

The biggest draw to the Nokia Lumia 930 (from £412 SIM-free) is that it offers the best Windows Phone experience – Windows Phone 8.1 in this case. But is Microsoft losing the war against Apple and Google? Perhaps from a consumer’s point of view, but certainly not in terms of business.

The Nokia Lumia 930 is undoubtedly one of Nokia's top offerings, which is particularly significant considering the message it sends. The Nokia spirit still lives after the Microsoft acquisition. The Lumia 930 isn't in the best position, being the first flagship following the transition, but what's more significant is that even at its best, a Lumia flagship stops just short of matching its Android peers. The WP8.1 update is certainly a step in the right direction, but one question still looms: what if Nokia had gone with Android?

The Lumia 930 is a step in the right direction with its semi-metal design and decent hardware line-up. We like the screen and camera but it's lacking additional features and doesn't have expandable storage. Windows Phone 8.1 vastly improves things on the software side but the platform is still not a priority for developers – especially when it comes to third-party hardware.

Featuring Nokia's stellar ClearBlack screen and PureView camera technologies, a distinctive-yet-robust design and all the inherent enterprise perks of Windows Phone 8.1, the Nokia Lumia 930 is a great smartphone. Were it not for the Lumia 930's less-than-stellar battery life, the handset would be the second Lumia smartphone to achieve V3's hallowed five-star rating.

The Nokia Lumia 930 is a really great device that's hampered by a few too many elements, preventing me from lauding it as a truly standout handset. The main reason is still the same one I've been yammering about for a couple of years, and I'll say it again: Windows Phone is still not up the level of the rest of the competition, and that hampers any big gains made in hardware. Before anyone jumps straight to the comments to decry me as a fanboi of whichever other system, let me say this: I really like Windows Phone. In theory.

If you're a Windows Phone devotee, the Nokia Lumia 930 is easy to recommend. It's not a perfect phone, but it's definitely the best Windows Phone currently on sale. It's very fast and runs the latest version of Windows Phone 8, which adds some nice extra features. For everyone else, while it's an very accomplished phone, we're not totally convinced this is the phone that will convert people to Windows Phone. That's mainly down to the chunky design and underwhelming battery life, though the lack of HDR for the camera is another irritating aberration for a top-end phone.

The Lumia 930 is big, bold and has touches of brilliance. As much as it wows, though, there's still work to be done to truly set it apart from the competition. This is one that will divide the crowd, but is a device that can't be ignored for its positives and its aspirations. Whether it can be so highly praised in two months' time from now is another matter, but right now this is the best Windows Phone device that money can buy.

As if in recognition of this, the Lumia 930 comes with a decent two-week launch offer of a dinky Bluetooth speaker, a wireless charging plate and a £20 app voucher. Even after that, every 930 sold in the UK will include a wireless charging plate. So if you’re already in the Windows Phone world, it may be worth waiting until later in the year to see what Nokia-soft has up its sleeve. That said, the Lumia 930 isn't a bad device by any means. It has superb build quality and its corporate-friendly features could see it sell in decent numbers. You wouldn't grumble if you were assigned one.

If you're tempted by the prospect of owning a Windows Phone, then chances are you'll like the Nokia Lumia 930. It boasts a great, 5-inch, full-HD display; excellent camera; a host of useful Nokia apps; and an attractive, albeit bulky design. Just keep in mind that this phone isn't available directly from a U.S. carrier (at least not yet), and its battery life is slightly below average.

The Lumia 930 combine good size with the most comprehensive Windows Phone software to-date. We can't fault the hardware, with Nokia delivering a superb display and good camera. Battery life doesn't match devices like the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2, but few do. But if your business is tied into Microsoft's legacy apps, this is one of the best devices available.

If it’s Windows Phone you want, rather than a truly outstanding camera phone like the Lumia 1020, the Nokia Lumia 930 is the one you want: it’s a truly cutting edge piece of hardware only let down by Windows Phone 8.1’s limitations and lack of critical mass. That said, there are some seriously sexy Android alternatives this year, and Google’s operating system still has a major app advantage. Unless the Lumia 930 drops in price, and quickly, we’d go for the turbo-charged LG G3 every time, but this is a close second.

The Nokia Lumia 930 may not have the staying power of other Lumia devices, but for those who want the best Windows Phone 8.1 experience in a normal-sized handset, there's simply no competition. It doesn't come cheap, as contracts start from £33-per-month, but we wouldn't expect any less for a top of the range handset. With a fantastic screen, lightning fast performance and a great camera, the Lumia 930 is the greatest Windows phone yet.

First impressions of the Nokia Lumia 930 are good. It's not the curvy phone that the 925 was, but it feels like a serious smartphone. We can't wait to really put it through its paces closer to launch on 17 July.

Our first impressions of the Lumia 930 are positive - it’s a stunningly well-built handset and the small bezel means the 5-inch display doesn’t feel over the top. There’s no word on battery life and while Windows Phone 8.1 now feels like a true rival to Android it’ll be the day-to-day usage that will really show if this is Nokia’s best smartphone yet.
