Without significant forward steps in the camera department you’d think it might be tough to get too giddy over the release of the OnePlus 8T but far from it. There are improvements in enough other areas that the 8T just about edges in front of our current favourite mid-range phone, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. The OnePlus 8T has a nicer design and feel to it and a longer-lasting, faster-charging battery. Although the camera isn’t quite up to the S20 FE’s standards, it’s not far behind, plus you have the bonus of decent macro and monochrome photography options, as well. With the only significant weaknesses being a lack of dust and water IP rating and no microSD slot, the OnePlus 8T makes a strong case for itself as the finest mid-range smartphone money can buy. If you’re looking to spend around £549 on a smartphone, this is the one to beat.

When I first got my hands on the OnePlus 8T, I really wanted to love it. I thought OnePlus was going to take the best parts of the high-end OnePlus 8 Pro and return to its roots by making a serious flagship-killer, especially after the underwhelming OnePlus 8. But the $749 price tag is too much, given the competition, and disappointing camera performance has made the OnePlus 8T a letdown. Build quality, performance, and 120Hz display are serious high points for the OnePlus 8T. But I don’t think it really marks a major upgrade over the OnePlus 7T from last year. It’s a bit faster in benchmarks, but in real-world use that doesn't make a huge difference. And I don't think a jump from a 90Hz display to 120Hz is worth the price of an upgrade.

The OnePlus 8T with its 65W charger provides both overall fast charging and great quick boosts of power. Where it falls a bit short is in autonomy, particularly in comparison with the Mi 10T Pro, where the 8T lags behind by more than half a day in average use. However, the tradeoff between autonomy and charging among the three phones results in a virtual tie, with the OnePlus only one point behind the Xiaomi and 3 points ahead of the Oppo in the high-end segment.

The OnePlus 8T is a slight bump from its predecessor with a design that’s more in line with the firm’s mid-range OnePlus Nord. It’s a great smartphone with a lot to give, but lacks a flagship-level camera and doesn't do much to stand out.

At the end of the day, it’s pretty hard to recommend the OnePlus 8T. This is especially the case considering that the OnePlus 8 Pro is now discounted to $699 and the OnePlus 9 retails for $729. Six months later, the OnePlus 8T sits at an awkward price point, offering a great user experience at the sacrifice of good camera performance and a few key essentials for any modern, value-centric flagship.

The OnePlus 8T, while not earning sterling scores for its front camera, produces decent selfies within its limits. Especially outdoors and at optimal focal distance (30 cm to 50 cm), it captures sharp, well-exposed selfies, even if there tends to be strong luminance noise in low-light conditions. Its limitations show up at greater distances because of the fixed-focus lens. Selfie-stick devotees may be disappointed because of slightly out-of-focus images at longer distances. The limited depth of field could be an issue for those seeking to present detailed backgrounds. The camera also has some limitations in lower light situations. Video performance is adequate but not spectacular.

The lack of a dedicated tele-camera means it’s best to limit yourself to small doses of tele-zoom to avoid too much loss of detail. The ultra-wide camera is a good option when you need a wider field of view to capture a scene, but noise and image artifacts mean it’s not for image quality perfectionists.

I haven’t been this excited for an Android phone in a very long time. I purchased the very first OnePlus phone years ago and thought it was good, nothing special, just good. Coming back to check them out again after all these years really surprised me, in a good way. While I still think the other Android options on the market are viable and really great for their user base. The OnePlus 8T really ticked all the requirements for me personally. That said, we still stand by OnePlus goal of trying to bring an affordable, flagship-performing device to the masses. Just look at its street price. For S$899, you can get the 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM variant, or pick up the 12GB RAM + 256GB ROM version at just S$1,099. Those sticker prices are really hard to beat - so much so that OnePlus struggled to pick features on the 8 Pro for diluting or leaving out on the 8T. Bargain hunters have no excuse but to keep this budget flagship phone squarely on their radars.

When the OnePlus 8 made its debut earlier this year, I said that recommending it was a little difficult, especially seeing how the OnePlus 7 Pro would have been a better choice, primarily due to its camera performance. In a way, the creation of the OnePlus 8T is essentially the brand’s response and, quite possibly, way of making amends for what its predecessor was lacking.

Dan and I both bought the OnePlus One when it came out in 2014, and over the years I have owned many of their later models. I’ve watched the OnePlus’s devices become even better over time, and while there’s been a big price shift from the $299 that the original OnePlus One sold for to the nearly $1000 that their latest phones have cost, for the most part, I’ve felt it was justified. Where in the not too distant past, I might have loved the hardware but hates the camera, OnePlus has really stepped up. OnePlus continues to offer better features, faster speeds, larger RAM, and glorious displays with some of the fastest refresh rates available at any price. I can manage without wireless charging and Wi-Fi calling, but if those features were ever available on this device, I would call it perfect.

With very little to differentiate the OnePlus 8T and its OnePlus 8 predecessors, it’s hard to justify why the company needs to put this variant out. That said, its super-fast 120Hz refresh rate and 65W wired charging are always welcome features. But if you don’t mind saving up a little more, you may as well invest in a OnePlus 8 Pro, which is superb in virtually all aspects.

So do I recommend the OnePlus 8T? I sure do. It is my favourite mid-ranger for the year and punches well above its weight. Available in Aquamarine Green or Lunar Silver (plus there is now a limited edition Cyberpunk 2077 Edition) you can pick one up for less than $900 from Kogan and other suppliers with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Keeping up with the tradition, OnePlus launched the ‘T’ version of the OnePlus 8 series in India a few weeks back. At time of writing, OnePlus has lowered the prices of the 8 and 8 Pro by $100. Going by the same memory configuration across all three phones (12GB of RAM and 256GB storage), the OnePlus 8 costs $700 and is $50 cheaper than the OnePlus 8T. Maybe if you're already paying $700, that extra $50 won't matter all that much to you. In that case, feel free to nab the 8T. But if you want to save as much as you can, get the OnePlus 8. Sure, you won't get that 120Hz refresh rate, but it's still a superb phone with a great battery life and a smooth 90Hz display. Though April may feel like a long time ago, the notion that the OnePlus 8 is an "old" phone just hasn't settled in yet. And with its new lowered price, it's the more compelling pick.

The OnePlus 8T gets so much right that it makes the few things it gets wrong all the more frustrating. The cameras proved too unreliable for me to want to use this device; it’s not that they can’t produce an excellent image at times, the cameras simply aren't consistent. Let me once again reiterate that the OnePlus 8T isn’t objectively a bad phone. If you have $750 to spend and you want a good phone, the 8T is a decent option. However, the only reason I would actually suggest someone spend $750 on it is if they absolutely needed a OnePlus phone with 65W charging. If you don’t need 65W charging, you can choose from many other OnePlus phones for half the price and a similar experience. This premium hardware includes a silky 120Hz display and four cameras on the back. It also comes with a beefy 65-watt charger that juices up the phone quickly. The OnePlus 8T has a few software updates, too, including an always-on display and a refreshed interface, which will roll out to other OnePlus phones.

Other than that, while not perfect, the OnePlus 8T is easily likable. It might even be love at first sight if you spent 10 minutes with its fluid Oxygen and fluid screen. We can't recommend it to any OnePlus 8 user, but we can encourage everyone else looking for a €600 or so phone - it is definitely among our top three picks, along with the Mi 10T Pro and the Galaxy S20 FE.

OnePlus has done it again: a superb smartphone at a very appealing price point. Although it has one or two weaknesses, and doesn't improve on its predecessors in any major way, the all-round package of the OnePlus 8T (and its retail price) mean that this is a winner.

Priced Rs 42,999 onwards, the OnePlus 8T goes for a cheaper price tag than the OnePlus 8, despite bringing several major upgrades over predecessor. It makes a good value-for-money smartphone in the OnePlus line-up, but not when compared with other smartphones in the same segment. The OnePlus 8T’s generic design, mediocre cameras, and lack of wireless charging and ingress protection rating pull it behind competing smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (review). Though the upgrades make it a worthy seasonal refresh, which is also apparently cheaper, the phone still does not seem to plug the midrange-premium gap.

The OnePlus 8T is a conservative update that's made more convincing by a price drop compared to the 8, making it an incredibly competitive budget flagship - but an upgrade to the main camera is now long overdue.

OnePlus has announced the OnePlus 8T, a $749 5G phone that fits right in between the $699 OnePlus 8 ($699 at Amazon) and $899 OnePlus 8 Pro ($999 at OnePlus), which were released in April. (The OnePlus 8T's UK price of £549 converts to about AU$1,000.) The OnePlus 8T has a similar design to the 8, but carries over some of the better specs of the 8 Pro.

The OnePlus 8T comes with a slew of great features including 5G, superfast charging and a lovely display. But it's the cameras on the back that I'm most interested in, so I was excited to get the phone in my hand and take it on a walk through the orange leaves of Edinburgh in the fall.

I’m still testing the OnePlus 8T and will update this review when I’m finished, but the results so far leave a strong impression. For $749, you’re getting the specs, design, and performance of a thousand-dollar flagship. It even stands up to the $799 iPhone 12, at least on paper.

But OnePlus isn’t just selling an upper mid-range competitor. It wants to take on the highest-end phones, as evidenced by its thinly veiled tagline: "Ultra stops at nothing." OnePlus has returned to its most successful formula with a phone that’s pretty powerful and, well, just plain pretty.

After the slightly underwhelming OnePlus 8, all eyes will be on the OnePlus 8T to fix many of its shortcomings. Well, the OnePlus 8T does introduce many changes, but still leaves out many of the features we were hoping to see such as an IP rating or even wireless charging. OnePlus' decision to leave these features out is quite frustrating, but also perhaps understandable, since you don't want a new phone to steal the thunder away from an existing flagship. This is what happened to the OnePlus 8 when the Nord was launched, and I don't think OnePlus wants to make the same mistake again.

The OnePlus 8T is a good upgrade for all OnePlus users who are on phones that came before the OnePlus 7. In fact, I won’t be surprised if OnePlus 8 buyers feel a bit shortchanged after this one because it is, by all means, a better phone, coming just months after they got theirs. OnePlus has tried its best to leave some edge for the OnePlus 8 Pro, but this clearly comes in the middle. In fact, with the performance of the past Ts, the OnePlus 6T, 7T and now the 8T, consumers might just be inclined to wait for this and not buy the base model, which also faces heat from the more affordable Nord series.

Since then, the OnePlus has done this. The OnePlus 8T checks all the boxes for me except for the $1,100 price, which is a lot to ask for a smartphone that you can’t subsidize from a carrier. If it came in closer to $700 like the Nord, I think this would be my favourite phone of the year. But for now, it’s nice to see OnePlus release a phone that’s as stellar as this and hopefully, it can take what it’s learned and apply it to the next Nord handset.

I’ve used the phone as my main handset for a week or two now. The green model I have is cheaper than the OnePlus 8 Pro but has the same CPU, the same memory, the same storage and a smaller screen which I actually found more suitable. Sure, there’s no wireless charging, no microSD and the screen is a little different, but this is – as with all the OnePlus phones – a lot of bang for your buck. A beautiful interface, a fantastic design and an attention to detail which really is lifting this company into the limelight more and more.

As such, we only reserve our recommendation of the OnePlus 8T to those for whom the camera isn't a priority. It has plenty of qualities that still make it a good smartphone. However, it's not the most well-rounded phone in its price range, and as weird as it feels to say this, the OnePlus 8T is outclassed in value by the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE.

With the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro now being discounted ($599/$799) and Samsung’s Galaxy S20 FE shipping widely ($700), the 8T’s value proposition drops even further. We know OnePlus can do better -- the lovely OnePlus Nord is basically a OnePlus 8 with a Snapdragon 765G for €399. As such, it’s disappointing to see the company miss the mark on the 8T’s price, and we can only hope for future deal pricing to improve this picture. In addition, hopefully the rumored OnePlus Nord (US edition) puts the “plus” back into OnePlus.

On paper, the OnePlus 8T looks like a bigger improvement over the OnePlus 8 than it actually is. The numbers are all bigger, but the real-world improvements are incremental.

The OnePlus 8T is a good phone, to be sure, but it isn't convincingly better than the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE in enough ways to justify its higher price. While OnePlus didn't announce a US version of the OnePlus Nord along with the 8T, I hold out more hope for a version of that attractive midrange model. The Nord has a level of polish that you generally don't see in $400 phones, and with its shimmery blue back and OxygenOS 11, it could really shake up a price point that's typically dominated by duller devices. For now, our general-purpose Android pick remains the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. It has the reasonable price, long battery life, and solid zoom camera that most people want, and it's rife with trade-ins and sales that can make it an even better deal than its list price.

As a phone, the OnePlus 8T is very much a complete package. And as such, if you're looking at the phone from the perspective of a daily driver -- and not one on which to run benchmarks -- there's precious little you can fault it for. Design, display, cameras and performance, on all the OnePlus 8T scores well. Yes, there might be some better phones out there, but they are phones like the OnePlus 8 Pro that cost more. As a well-balanced phone, with good pricing, the OnePlus 8T is another phone from OnePlus that will delight users.

Even though the OnePlus 8T is a mid-cycle model for the company, it impresses. It is very much a downsized OnePlus 8 Pro, inheriting the same screen refresh rate and almost-identical battery size, but puts it in a smaller, easier-to-hold package. There’s even 65W fast charging, which has been one of my favorite smartphone technological breakthroughs this year. Qualcomm Adreno 650:
