Battery life is the big winner here, which benefits from the screen and processor combination. You can count on two full days of usage from this phone, which is more than most other handsets offer, though charging speeds aren’t the quickest. There’s a very welcome headphone jack and though the speaker is a mono affair it delivers solid sound. Memory card support is also a nice bonus alongside the 128GB of built-in storage. Overall though, the Samsung Galaxy A42 struggles to truly carve a niche among tough competition. Especially since the phone is almost two years old at this point and Samsung is still selling it for its original $400 launch price. We think that spending a bit more for the newer and better Galaxy A53 makes more sense. The phone is also often on sale, going for as low as $350. Alternatively, getting the Pixel 5a at $449 or waiting for the Pixel 6a seems like a better deal. And if you want to spend less on a Samsung phone, get the newer Galaxy A33.

Samsung mostly covered its bases with the Galaxy A42. The phone is a solid package that offers a lot in the way of functionality. It boasts an appealing design that may not be for everyone, but at least it stands out as unique. The screen is big and bright, even if it is lower resolution than some competitors. The processor delivers the everyday performance people demand, though it is a bit on the sluggish side when it comes to intense gaming. Each year, Samsung’s Galaxy A-series lineup gets a little better, but there’s always an awkward outlier. This year, it’s the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G. Yes, it offers millimeter-wave 5G, but that isn't enough to make up for its shortcomings. With sluggish performance, unimpressive cameras, and a low-res display, the Galaxy A42 5G doesn't stand out from the competition and simply isn't a good value at $400. For an extra $50, the Google Pixel 5a With 5G is miles better, with a sharper display, clearer cameras, and superior software, making it our Editors' Choice award winner for midrange phones. If you're looking to spend less, meanwhile, Samsung's own Galaxy A32 5G is our Editors’ Choice winner for affordable models, and offers much better value for the money than the A42.

If you think you’ll want a little more than the A42 5G has to offer, then the $500 A52 5G is a good step-up option with a bit of a better camera, a great high refresh rate screen, and the added peace of mind of IP-rated waterproofing. If you can find a Pixel 4A 5G in stock anywhere, that would be another good alternative at $500 with a better camera, faster processor, and cleaner software. It offers a smaller 6.2-inch screen, though, and again, you’ll have a hard time finding one new at this point since its successor, the Pixel 5A, will likely be arriving in the near future. If none of the above suits you, then the A42 5G really isn’t a bad choice. Its healthy support policy, decent overall performance, and robust battery life make it one of the best options from Verizon for around $400. Just don’t get too excited about mmWave.

After spending more time with it, I’ve grown to love the Samsung Galaxy A42’s striking design. This is a shiny phone, almost metallic-looking in person, but it also offers an iridescent reflection peppered with an eye-catching dot pattern. I know it's a silly thing to highlight, and yet for me, it makes all of the difference. I still notice how compelling this phone looks a month later, which I didn't expect from a middle-of-the-road Samsung device. It's a stunner, no bones about it.

The 5,000mAh battery will let you get two full days out of the A42 — even when you're having to bounce between 4G, Sub6, and UWB on Verizon. The screen is vivid and easy to read outdoors, but the triple-camera setup here is a distinct downgrade from other A-series offerings.

But you also need to consider that, while its a good smartphone overall, the Rs 21,999 price tag still feels unfair, just for the added 5G connectivity, especially when Samsung has cut some corners with the HD+ display. In the same price segment, Samsung’s own Galaxy M32 or M31, Galaxy M51, Galaxy F62 are good alternatives. And if you are looking for smartphones outside of Samsung, then the Poco X3 Pro, OnePlus Nord/Nord CE, Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, Motorola G60, iQoo 3, Mi 10i or Realme X3 SuperZoom, are all great alternatives, and some of these also offer 5G connectivity.

The Galaxy A42 5G I reviewed is a carrier device, but you can also grab one unlocked. If you're not married to Verizon, Samsung's cheaper A32 ($280 retail) and slightly more expensive A52 ($500 retail) may be better options, depending on what you're looking for, hence the odd positioning of the A42 in the market. Of course, there are fewer options if you want to buy a 5G Samsung phone direct from Verizon, so the A42 is easier to recommend on Big Red's network. Regardless of where you get it, the A42 5G is a solid phone that packs exceptional build quality. Performance is snappy, even though you only get 4GB of RAM, and the large battery means you'll avoid range anxiety. You can also expect expedient and long-term software support, though the massive amount of pre-installed bloatware should have lowered the price a little further, in my opinion. Also, the cameras are just good enough but don't really offer anything special.

The Galaxy A42 5G might have been a more compelling phone last year, when it was first released outside the United States, but I’m not sure it’s as good of a purchase in 2021 at $399. It’s definitely not a bad phone, with its speedy internal hardware and massive screen, but it feels like less of a value compared to other recent phones. The Galaxy A52 5G is $100 more than this phone and has a better (but still plastic) build, a display with twice the refresh rate (120Hz), and improved cameras. If you can spend the extra money, the Galaxy A52 5G is likely a better investment. On the other side of the price spectrum, the Galaxy A32 5G is Samsung’s cheapest 5G phone at $280, and isn’t much worse than the A42.

Samsung Galaxy M42 comes with a good build quality and it also offers a powerful mid-range processor. The smartphone comes with the latest operating system and will get three more Android updates in the future. It comes with a starting price tag of Rs 21,999 which makes it an affordable 5G smartphone. In our opinion this smartphone is for the people who only want to purchase a Samsung phone. The smartphone will face stiff competition from Realme 8 5G smartphone which is available at Rs 22,999.

So, should you buy the Galaxy M42 5G? Only if you’re looking for an affordable phone with excellent gaming performance and support for 5G networks. For everything else, there are better alternatives on the market, such as the Galaxy A32. It doesn’t have 5G or great gaming performance but gets you a better display (with a 90Hz refresh rate) and main camera and similar battery life and software features.

The Galaxy M42 5G is now the most affordable 5G smartphone that Samsung has on offer. It packs in a capable processor and offers good performance. However, Samsung has cut some corners with the display. An HD+ resolution at the Rs. 21,999 price point is highly disappointing. Given that 5G networks are still not available in India, you could consider the Galaxy F62 to be a worthy alternative. If you are looking specifically for a 5G-ready smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 10i (Review)and the Realme X7 (Review) are better alternatives to the Galaxy M42 5G at this price level.

The Samsung Galaxy M42 5G starts at Rs 21,999 for the 6GB RAM variant and while the phone gets a couple of things right, the smartphone’s lacklustre display and its uninspiring design stick out like a sore thumb. What’s more, the device faces stiff competition from the likes of Xiaomi’s Mi 10i too which, pound for pound, offers better specs and performance. Lest I forget, the company’s Galaxy F62 (review) retails for around the same price too and puts forth a more well-rounded package as well. Consequently, unless you’re looking for the cheapest 5G phone from Samsung, you might want to spend your hard-earned bucks elsewhere.

The Samsung Galaxy M42 has all that it takes to be a perfect midranger, let it be the CPU itself, the Snapdragon 750G is a king in its class, other than that is the Super AMOLED display, 5G capabilities, Android 11 out-of-the-box, the reliable battery life, and good cameras, aside from its new eye-catchy Prism design, however, the only two downsides we think are its display resolution which is the HD+ and the standard 60 Hz refresh rate, otherwise would be a strong contender in its class at this price (₹21,999). If it doesn’t bother you, this could be one of the best non-Chinese smartphones available in India.

Samsung has picked a powerful processor for the Galaxy M42 5G to take the battle to the competition. While the Rs. 21,999 starting price is competitive, it does make me wonder whether Samsung has cut corners to reach it. So is the Galaxy M42 5G a smartphone worth recommending? I'll answer this in the full review, coming soon.

If you are coming from a smartphone with a 1080p display, it might take some time to get used to the Galaxy A42 5G’s 720p display. Still, if you’re not that nitpicky when it comes to the display category, the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G is undoubtedly one of the best smartphones on this tier.

The Galaxy A42 5G is a cheap 5G mid-ranger, which excels in everything it does - gaming, browsing, multimedia, office apps, and whatnot. It has a large AMOLED screen and a beefy battery to keep whatever you are doing for quite some time. So, yes, the Galaxy A42 5G seems like a great chap.

In addition to that, the phone comes with the Samsung Knox feature, which is usually available on Samsung flagships only. It allows users to safely store personal data onto the smartphone, so it's particularly suitable for high-ranking business execs. With Knox, you can prevent information stored in the smartphone from being easily leaked.

The Samsung Galaxy A42 5G has a lot of things that we’ve come to enjoy from their other offerings and the addition of Qualcomm’s mid-range 5G-ready processor would have made it easier to recommend for people looking to prepare themselves for the expanding network in the Philippines. But this price bracket has always been contentious and it will definitely have a tough time going against other brands’ products that offer a better price to performance ratio; especially with all the compromises, they’ve made for this model.
