The Samsung Galaxy A54 is in the somewhat awkward, and definitely overcrowded, mid-range smartphone market. Offer too much and you compete with other Samsung phones: offer too little, and you aren’t competitive with other brands. Around this price point, there is some real competition, including from Samsung’s own S-series from last year – with the Samsung Galaxy S22 being a serious contender at roughly the same price as the A54. There’s also the Google Pixel 7A, which has some seriously impressive photography features. However, both of these have smaller screens, and smaller batteries. If you don’t want a smaller screen, then other options include the Nothing Phone 1, which is cheaper, but doesn’t offer a third camera.

It is immediately apparent that the Galaxy A55 wins on nearly every front against its predecessor. Everywhere else, it’s a draw, so in the end, the A55 comes out on top anyway. It offers a more modern and robust build, better performance, potentially faster charging and longer battery life, as well as the great cameras familiar with the Galaxy A54. What’s more, it’s all for £10 less than the price of the A54 if you live in the UK. On the other hand, if you live in the US where the A55 isn’t available, your best option is to buy the Galaxy A35, as it’s a lot cheaper.

Does the Galaxy A54 deserve all the hate? We don’t think so. It’s Php 26,990 asking price for the 256GB model may be pricey for a phone that’s limited to 25w charging and has rather thick bezels–but the Galaxy A54 has its own advantages. Things that people tend to overlook is its better overall build that reminds us of the Galaxy S23 series, a solid software support of 4 major updates and 5 years of security updates, and an IP68 rating.

With the midrange smartphone category being so competitive lately, it’s getting harder for new phones to stand out. Brands now face the difficult question of how to make midrange phones as attractive and feature-packed as they can without cannibalising sales from the flagship models. However, the Galaxy A54 does have its good points to make it an option for consideration. The Galaxy A54 is a good choice for people who want a budget midrange phone that has flagship features like 5G support, a 120Hz refresh rate and IP67-rated dust and water protection, while also featuring a large battery that provides long-lasting battery life. The cherry on top is the length of software support that Samsung offers with its ever-familiar UI, making this a midrange phone more attractive than other phones in the same category with these aspects in mind. But, if you value performance above all else, you might have the same problem I have. The Exynos 1380 chip and its performance makes it harder to recommend it over other midrange handsets with more powerful processing.

But it doesn't deliver in all the areas it should, and that's a huge missed opportunity in our book. We have nothing against Exynos chipsets, unlike a lot of people, but this one simply isn't fit for a device at this price, in 2023. And this isn't some big surprise, it was obvious from when the A54 was announced that this would be the case, but Samsung still went its own way. Let's put it like this: with a better chipset (say, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2) and a better (even if side-mounted) fingerprint sensor, this would easily have been a "just go and buy it, don't think about it twice" recommendation at this price. As it is, we would definitely suggest you think about it a lot, and very carefully weigh the pros and cons we have laid out for you in this long-term review, according to your particular needs and priorities.

The endurance numbers alone make the Galaxy A54 an easy phone to recommend. But, to Samsung's credit, the A54 is just a well-rounded handset that flexes between flagship features and thoughtful compromises, and its $450 price tag is the icing on the cake.

The A54 5G had its work cut out to fully justify the price increase but I think it just about succeeds. The newer chipset not only delivers a serious boost in performance but stamina is greatly improved as well. The display is also brighter and the main camera is excellent. So why doesn’t it get a Best Buy award? The problem here is that the Nothing Phone (1) manages to do a few things better for less money. Its display is HDR10+ compliant, where the Samsung’s is not, and it looks cooler, too. If it wasn’t for Nothing, the A54 5G would rocket straight to first place but, as it stands, it’s going to have to settle for a silver medal. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is far from the most exciting smartphone ever designed, but it delivers lots of value. For $450, you get solid everyday performance, good battery life, decent cameras, on-point wireless connectivity, and the industry’s most generous update policy. Unfortunately for Samsung, the Google Pixel 7a is just a little better. The differences are slight, but factor in its standout design, superior photography suite, and small performance win, and the Pixel 7a remains our Editors’ Choice pick for midrange phones.

We were quick to criticize Samsung when the company seemed to be resting on its laurels with the Galaxy A53 with small changes over the A52 family. Despite the more significant changes brought by the next model in the family, it is hard to ignore the fact that the competition not only came with their own improvements, some models offered truly flagship-level performance for the same price as the Galaxy A54. And it is not only the usual criticisms against slower charging speeds. 2023 brought impressive performance levels to the mid-range market with new Snapdragon and Dimensity chips, and Google's commitment to the Pixel line pose a tempting triple threat to anyone considering the Galaxy A54: Similar pricing on the Pixel 7a, unbeatable bang for the buck on the Pixel 6a, and frequent discounts on the Pixel 7.

For R9 999, the Galaxy A54 5G is a great everyday phone. A fantastic camera array is bolstered by a wonderful display and solid performance. If you’re looking for a taste of the Galaxy, but don’t have the budget for a flagship, the A54 5G is easily recommended. One may even argue that the specifications of the likes of the S23 series are over the top and the A54 will give you everything you need for far less. Its only drawback is the lack of charger included in the box. An unnecessary fumble in an otherwise great all-round deal.

Seldom are mid-range phones as memorable as their flagship counterparts, but Samsung's Galaxy A series – and its A5X devices in particular – are often notable entrants into the mid-range market each year; unquestionably serving as some of the best Samsung phones money can buy. They've seen a lot of success in past generations, with both the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A51 being among the best-selling phones in the world, in their respective launch years, making the arrival of this newest entry for 2023 – the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G – all the more significant.

The A54's combination of decent performance, fun design, vibrant cameras and low price make it a potentially great budget option. Its bright screen, expandable storage and longer software support are ticks in its favor over Google's Pixel 6A, but the Pixel 6A wins in almost every other respect. The software is nicer to use, the cameras are better and it's even cheaper. Between the two, my money would go on the Pixel 6A.

The Galaxy A54 5G is the best mid-range phone Samsung has ever made, but that doesn't mean you should rush out to get one. Google's Pixel 7a is a better phone by almost any measurement, but there are still reasons to choose Samsung over Google in this price range. First off, Samsung's feature-rich software is second to none for customizability and sheer value. The Galaxy ecosystem of products like the best Samsung earbuds and a Galaxy Watch 5 will all pair better with this phone and provide the best experience you can get, including several unique features that you won't get when pairing other companies' products with this phone. Second, is the fact that the Pixel 7a isn't available everywhere in the world. If you live in one of those countries, the Galaxy A54 5G is the best bet at this price. And to be fair, you're not exactly going to regret the decision given how much value Samsung has packed in here.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G impressed us with its price and then with its performance. It doesn't feel quite as premium as a flagship device but it does have a great display and a really decent battery. You also get a water-resistance rating which you don't always find on less expensive smartphones. There's a good line-up of cameras and most of the images captured are great but on occasion, the AI over-saturated blues and greens which won't be to everyone's liking.

The midrange category can be difficult to get right for a lot of manufacturers. It forces companies to make tradeoffs to get the price down to an acceptable level. If those tradeoffs are done in the wrong areas, it can lead to a poor experience. Luckily, Samsung did its homework and kept the tradeoffs to a minimum. The Samsung Galaxy A54 has a beautiful display, years of software support, and great battery life. Its chipset isn't the strongest on the midrange market but is serviceable and is more than up for the task of most everyday requirements. The camera on the A54 can struggle a bit in low light and the Pixel 6a offers a more comprehensive camera setup. If taking pictures is your primary concern, then the Pixel 6a (soon to be 7a) should be your go-to in this price range. For everyone else, the Galaxy A54 is well-designed and a great device at this price point.

So the big question really is that, is the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G worth considering buying? Well the answer would be yes as it does bring some great value for money from the overall experience, the cameras, performance and battery power all doing quite well. Yes there were a couple of issues I did experience with the device the overall conclusion would be from me is that if you´re after a new device but didn’t want to totally break the bank or looking for a second device say for work, then the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is very much worthy of consideration. My only question is can the Galaxy A54 5G beat or at least lift its weight for when the Pixel 7a is launched given uwe are expecting the new Pixel 7a device to be launched sometime soon, it will be yet to see what the comparisons would be. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G comes in violet and graphite colours and can be purchased from the Samsung website and stores alongside retail partner JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Officeworks, Big W, Catch.com.au, Harvey Norman and Optus, though the latter is offered via mobile phone plans. The Samsung Galaxy A54 has a lot going for it, but as the new high-end of the Galaxy A series it’s creeping closer to the Galaxy S series in terms of features and pricing – especially if you’re prepared to look at the previous generation of S series handsets. You could be forgiven for dubbing the A54 the S23a. Even if you’re determined to stick with Samsung, you’ll need to weigh up your priorities to decide where your money is best spent across the A and S series spectrum. If your budget won’t stretch any further than the Galaxy A54 but you want to shop around, it stacks up as a worthy contender alongside the Pixel 6a/7a and the growing range of high-end mid-range handsets that are delivering a lot of bang for your buck. If you’re focused on one particular aspect like grunt or photography then other handsets in this price/performance range might catch your eye, but the Samsung Galaxy A54 is an impressive all-rounder.

Overall, the Galaxy A54 is an excellent device with very little compromises and I daresay the experience is very close to the Galaxy S23 in several aspects, it retails for RM1,899 and cost slightly more than the Galaxy A53’s launch price, which I think is totally worth getting over its predecessor for its better build quality and improved main camera, and compared to its competition, Samsung’s commitment to longer and regular software updates is a big win.

Overall, Samsung has created a solid device that has a great design, ergonomic grip and a decent camera. When comparing the A53 and A54 5G, it is a slight upgrade on specs especially when it comes to chipset and brightness. Nonetheless, the Samsung is able to deliver a decent smartphone for its price range. Speaking of the price, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G start at PHP 24,990 for the 8GB+128GB variant and PHP 26,990 for the 8GB+256GB combo. The device is available in three colors — Lime, Violet, and Graphite.

When it comes to mobile devices, most people are attracted by the shiny new flagships. But Malaysia is a country of budget-conscious people, so a product's value is also of utmost importance. It's why mid-range devices are so popular here, but also means we're spoiled for choice. Having said that, the Galaxy A series devices from Samsung are among the best options available, in our opinion. They look good, deliver great features, and have extra value in other areas. For the new Galaxy A series devices launched this month, that extra value is a 5+4+2 combo. Today, we'll tell you why this combo makes the Samsung Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G the reliable smartphone companions you need.

Samsung Galaxy A54 and A34 should repeat the success of previous models. In many aspects, they have undergone evolutionary rather than revolutionary changes, which is a completely natural situation, because even flagships usually receive few fundamental changes. At the same time, smartphones have brighter screens and it is worth reminding that the A-series remains almost the only mass offer in the middle segment with cases that are protected against moisture and dust. The manufacturer also emphasizes long software support, which will come in handy later, during real operation. In the context of comparing A34 and A54, the main task is to emphasize the features of the models. Smartphones turned out to be universal, the Galaxy A34 has a more affordable price and will suit those who are less interested in cameras and who like big phones. The model will also please you with a bright display and excellent battery life. Perhaps this is what a "youth" smartphone should be. In its turn, the Samsung Galaxy A54 fully justifies the higher price with better cameras, it is worth considering the glass back panel, and compact dimensions can also be an advantage in choosing this model.

We've come away from our time with the Galaxy A54 in a bit of a conundrum. On the one hand, we have a device with a great, big, vibrant display and good battery life. It has strong cameras too - to an extent. But at its price range, it has a lot of competition. Look at the Pixel range from Google, and you can either spend similar money (or a little more if there's no sale) and get the Pixel 7 which has excellent cameras and offers a clean, fluid, bloat-free software experience. Or you can spend less and get the Pixel 6a. We'd argue the Galaxy A54 has a stronger display and battery than either Pixel, but Google's phones are more competitively priced given the rest of their strengths (particularly camera and software experience). Likewise, there are the likes of the OnePlus Nord 2T and Poco F4 which offer faster, more responsive, smoother experiences for less money than the Galaxy A54. Samsung's latest A50-series is still the phone to get if you want a long-lasting phone, that you mostly use for consuming media. That bright, large display really sells it. With a more restrained approach to software and more consistently smooth user interface experience, it could be an incredible mid-range device.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is a good phone for the price. Whether it’s suitable for you or not depends on your needs in a smartphone. It’s hard to fault some of its drawbacks given its relatively affordable price of RM1,899.Looking at the bigger picture, it’s a capable daily driver that would be suitable for many consumers out there.

Last year’s model was not that interesting, but the company come back on track with the Samsung Galaxy A54 smartphone and reckon the previous mistakes. With this phone, the users will obtain long-lasting battery life, eye-catchy design layout, dust and water protection coating, beautiful camera results, enhanced display experience, and decent battery life support. All of those factors make this phone a complete flagship killer phone. However, if you are looking for something different from the traditional Android phone, we suggest you check out the Honor X9a as it delivers a completely different user experience than the regular options. Following this, the users can look at Xiaomi Poco X5 Pro for a better performance experience. But overall, the Galaxy A54 is a meaningful upgrade from the previous generation that you should consider buying.

Reviewing the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G, a mid-range smartphone and Pixel 6a rival boasting an upgraded 50MP camera and fresh Exynos 1380 performance. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G costs from £449 in the UK and this OneUI 5.1 phone is a worthy successor to the A53, especially for gaming. While last year's Galaxy A53 smartphone was a let-down, this 2023 update makes amends with a redesigned Exynos 1380 chipset. Genshin Impact has been quite stable this week on the Galaxy A54, even when pushed up to medium detail settings, with only the occasional drop in frame rate. Battery life is good enough for over six hours of screen-on time per charge, even with lots of audio streaming in the BG. Sadly the Samsung Galaxy A54 peaks at 25W wired charging and there's no wireless charging (check out the Nothing Phone 1 if that's a deal breaker). As for that camera, well, the Galaxy A54 5G serves up a primary 50MP sensor that does a great job in most conditions, although moving subjects can pose a problem as shutter speed isn't the fastest. All the same, even in low light you can get some quite sharp and bright photos.

The Galaxy A54 has been my daily device with my main SIM card inside, so it has been called into action on everything from GPS navigation to photos, chats, calls, games, and app browsing. Nothing special about that, but I have been using it alongside the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and the Galaxy S23 Ultra. I find that if a phone I’m reviewing has notable downsides or frustrations, I’ll reach for the other phones I have with me at the time just because I don’t want to deal with them. Despite the strength of the other devices in my bag, the Galaxy A54 hasn’t prompted me to grab either of its far more expensive peers. I’ve not even made a point of using the A54 — I just used it. That speaks volumes about the A54’s ability and software. This is a great phone let down slightly by its disappointing battery life, the camera’s performance is sure to split opinions and I’m not sure there’s much more performance to give, raising questions about its longevity. It’s a shame when the phone’s software commitment is so strong. However, take the quality, software, durability, and design into account, and the Galaxy A54 becomes very appealing. This brings me on to that important consideration and the question you must ask yourself before buying the Galaxy A54. It’s excellent, but if you spend a little more, the next steps up — the OnePlus 11, Google Pixel 7, and even a Galaxy S23 if you can find it on offer — are seriously good. They’ll also last you a lot longer than the Galaxy A54 on a hardware level, meaning the extra initial cost will be offset in the future. It’s a hard decision, but if you don’t want to spend more, the Galaxy A54 is a safe purchase you won’t regret, provided your requirements don’t change over time.

If you’re on the fence about upgrading, ask yourself if you want a better display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which, oddly enough, previous devices couldn’t deliver, and if you want a camera that’s about 20% better. It’s also worth mentioning the rather interesting updated design, good battery life, IP67 dust and moisture protection, eSIM support, and a memory card. If your answer is yes, then the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G will be almost the perfect smartphone for you. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is a decent pick for users who want a device offering great battery life, an amazing display, and good camera performance at a starting price of Rs. 38999. The build quality of the phone is decent and with the software updates, you can easily use the device for up to 5 years. Overall, the phone offers an amazing user experience and value for money. But if you are someone looking for a better camera performance you can opt for the Google Pixel 6a launched last year. You can also opt for the iPhone 12 or iPhone SE 3 by paying a bit more.

If you are a Samsung fan who would rather endure the pain of a Pauly Shore movie marathon than buy a Pixel, absolutely pick up the Galaxy A54. You'll be thrilled with this year's offering due to a brighter display, significantly improved performance, and a premium build. In my opinion, OneUI 5.1 is still the software champ, and the A54 runs it well. If you don't have any brand loyalty or can wait a bit, it's worth seeing what the Pixel 7a offers. Either decision you make is the right one, as we will finally get the mid-range prize fight between Samsung and Google that I wanted to see last year. While the A53 was a huge letdown, the Galaxy A54 does more than enough to pick up the pieces and justify a $450 price tag.

For Rs 39,990, the Galaxy A54 in isolation is perhaps quite a competent phone. But it doesn’t exist in isolation and instead faces some really tough competition. The new OnePlus 11R is a phone that sells for more or less the same price and can claim to beat the Galaxy A54 in quite a few aspects. As for the Galaxy A54, the performance is adequate for most needs, the battery is impressive here. Plus, the camera performance is also fine with good and detailed output most of the time including in low light conditions. The phone has one of the best displays you can find in this price range. The only thing is that if you are looking for something to offer the best possible performance at this price range, the Galaxy A54 isn’t for you. There’s a simple equation for determining whether or not the Galaxy A54 is your best option in this price range. If you care more about creature comforts, then you should go with the Samsung rather than the Pixel 6A. You get a bigger screen with a fast top refresh rate, plus the fanciness of a rear glass panel. If you care more about photo quality than getting the most screen for your dollar, then you should go with the Pixel 6A (or wait a few weeks, when we will likely see the Pixel 7A debut). It’s hands-down better in low light and still unmatched in the midrange class, even almost a year after its release. And there are still good reasons to pay more for something like the S23 Plus, like better camera processing and a sleeker build, but not as many as you might think. Otherwise, the A54 has a lot going for it. The screen is exceptional for this class, day-to-day performance is dependable, and the IP67 rating combined with a strong support policy make its prospects for long-term ownership very good. Notwithstanding whatever upgrades the Pixel 7A will offer, the A54 checks more boxes than Google’s midranger, as long as camera quality isn’t your primary concern. It’s even a little bit fancy.

To conclude, as I said at the beginning of this review, recommending the A54 is a bit more tricky than you think. At the current MSRP, it is of course an overpriced phone. But if its price goes down (which is usually the case), it will make up for a strong midrange offering! Here you are getting a flagship-like design, a solid build quality complemented with IP67 protection. The display is great too, and so is the battery life to some level. The Exynos 1380 chipset—although not very optimized right now—is still a decent performer for day-to-day tasks. And of course, you get Samsung’s One UI experience with four OS updates and five years of security patches. The call quality is great with reliable 5G and WiFi reception, and the cameras should also eventually get better with updates. However, the sad reality right now is that it’s just a little pricey for what it actually offers!

At Rs 38,999 onwards, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is on the expensive side of the price spectrum. However, it is an all-round smartphone with something in store for everyone. It boasts a good super AMOLED screen of 120Hz refresh rate, loud and clear stereo speakers, a capable camera system, and IP67 protection. Performance and UI are the areas where the phone does not shine as bright, but that may just be me nitpicking here because the Galaxy A54 5G is a package deal, and not just about performance.

The A54 5G is a solid midrange phone. Is it exciting? Not especially. Its design is a clunky take on the flagship S23 line, and its respectable performance across the board is matched with very few wows. Still, we’re happy to recommend the A54 5G to most. The phone does what it needed to do, especially after last year’s underpowered A53 5G, its cameras are capable for the price, and it has a great screen that’s perfect for watching content on. The price hike year-on-year, and the fact you can get more fully-featured phones for less both gave us early reservations when we first saw the phone. But if you can’t justify spending £899 on an S23, want a Samsung phone and don’t mind sacrificing some style and power, the A54 5G definitely warrants your consideration.

Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G mid-range smartphone, with an upgraded 50MP camera and Exynos 1380 for improved gaming vs the A53. My full review of the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is incoming but here's my early verdict on this phone for gamers, photo fans etc. While last year's A50 series smartphone was a let-down, this fresh model seems to correct the awful performance with a redesigned Exynos 1380 chipset. While Genshin Impact still won't quite play with a fluid frame rate on medium settings on the Galaxy A54 5G, gamers can certainly enjoy their thumb-mashing sessions with a more stable experience overall. Battery life seems strong so far, offering around six hours of screen-on time per charge. However, I'll expand on my experiences in my final review of the Samsung A54 5G. You have 25W wired charging and no wireless charging (check out the Nothing Phone 1 if that's a deal breaker). As for that camera, well, Samsung reckons the bigger pixel size of the Galaxy A54 5G's primary 50MP sensor means better night photography. I'll be testing that out over the next couple of weeks too, as well as the video capture performance.

I’m relieved to report that Samsung is back on track with the Galaxy A54 5G after a miscue last year. Much is the same, with top-notch styling, IP67 protection, one of the best screens on a mid-range phone, and a dependable set of cameras. Furthermore, battery life is solid and Samsung continues to impress with its software upgrade guarantee. This would have all been fine on the A53 had performance been as reliable but luckily that’s fixed this year with a more powerful Exynos processor. It’s not automatically the best mid-range phone you can buy, especially with some excellent rivals at cheaper prices but it’s easy to recommend even if you’re not a Samsung loyalist. Still, it would be nice if Sammy could install some faster charging and allow users to choose a power brick for free when ordering.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is a pretty solid smartphone that lives up to what it promises to be – a solid mid-level device that has an awesome set of cameras and performs well. And even though the Exynos SoC may seem out of place for a smartphone at this price point, it stands up to get the job done rather well. What becomes an issue, however, is that Samsung has a lot of competition at this price point, most of which are solid performers and offer slightly better specs at least on paper. We are of course talking about devices from Nothing, Google, and OnePlus. Where Samsung beats all of them is the surety of a reliable after-sales service that is very difficult to beat and the fact that Samsung has guaranteed that they will be giving four major Android updates and 5 years of security updates. Then, there is also the fact that Samsung’s OneUI 5 is a clear favourite among users mainly because it has a healthy set of features and the fact that Samsung takes the security of its user’s data very seriously. At Rs 40,999, the Galaxy A54 seems a bit overpriced at first. However, there are areas where the premium that you’re paying for the device seems justified. Having said that, had the Galaxy A54 been priced a little more competitively, had it not walked straight into the territory of some of its current competitors, it would have been a lot easier to recommend the device, no questions asked. Still, the Galaxy A54 manages to be a pretty solid choice for anyone who is looking for a capable device that looks and feels premium.

At the end of the day, the Galaxy A54 5G is a fresh coat of paint to a successful product that is seeing heated competition. We like the new design styling, we appreciate the improved processor, and we like what Samsung has done with the cameras. As a whole, the A54 5G feels like a much more suitable phone to daily drive than the previous edition with very few compromises. And this being a Samsung phone means it should be pretty reliable in the long run too. The biggest annoyance remains the slightly choppy performance, you can see a bit of stutter when you unlock the phone and when you multitask, and it just doesn't feel buttery smooth. The second thing that might stop you from getting the A54 5G is that while video quality has improved, video stabilization in particular is still an issue and if you plan to record many videos, this is not the best phone to do that. The lack of a zoom camera and the portrait mode limited to just the wide cameras are the other biggest gaps. We did not care much about the lack of wireless charging, but we know many people who will, but overall that's about all the complaints we have against the new A54 5G. Cheaper phones are becoming better and the A54 5G is a perfect example. So now, let's see if Google can raise the stakes once again with the Pixel 7a in a couple of months!

Following up on the Galaxy A52s was no easy task for the A53, and last year's Galaxy A5x model left us unimpressed. The A54 puts the series back on the right track, we reckon. We're getting a more powerful chipset than last year (though, admittedly, it's roughly on par with the two-year-old A52s), improved battery life, and an even nicer display. The somewhat generic styling may not be overly eye-catchy, but it does quickly reveal your brand allegiance, and it can easily pass for the brand's flagship too. The dust and water protection rating is almost flagshippy too, and not a given at this price point. The brand new primary camera is a significant step up from the A53's, and it's one of the best units of its kind for the class, possibly even punching above its weight. The selfie camera takes great photos too, and the not-so-impressive ultrawide does the job. That is, so long as you don't need it for video. Add to that the lack of stabilization in 4K, and the A54's viability as a video camera is more than slightly shaken. The fact that you don't get a charger in the box still rubs us the wrong way, and as good as the new chipset may be, it only brings us back to the level the series was at two years ago. All things considered, we're quite liking the Galaxy A54. It's a meaningful generational improvement and a competent midrange package. Maybe not at MSRP - but give it a couple of months, and its price should be much more palatable.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is a decent all-rounder with a hint of a truly premium build thanks to a glass rear and an updated design that brings it pretty close to the flagship Galaxy S23 range. IP67 support, in particular, is notable at this price point. That’s backed up by a punchy, bright 120Hz AMOLED display, though the omission of any kind of HDR support will be disappointing for binge streamers. The main 50MP camera is another key upgrade for this year’s model, further improving performance in both well-lit and low-light conditions with plenty of light and detail on offer for the price tag. Performance is pretty decent for the price much of the time, but even simple tasks like unlocking the phone, switching cameras and playing games for extended periods can highlight the limitations of the mid-range chipset. Battery life is also a little hit-and-miss. As long as you’re not using the phone too often it should last, but even a 5000mAh battery can’t always provide comfortable all-day battery life if you’re really putting the phone to the test. Combined with slow 25W charging, there’s still a lot to be done here. With all that said, Galaxy A54 5G is a solid all-rounder that’ll do most things well, but it’s not quite as exciting or boundary-breaking as other mid-range options in 2023.

The Galaxy A53 has the design and some of the features of the more premium S23, and the Exynos 1380 proved to be significantly better than its predecessor in all aspects especially gaming.

I will be putting the phone through its paces over the next few days to see exactly what you can expect from it. Everything from the cameras to the battery life (Samsung says the A54 5G can go more than two days on a single charge based on how much you use it) is a detail I can’t really go into right now; this is just a hands-on based on a short period of use. Again, as mentioned earlier, the Galaxy A54 5G does feel different compared to its predecessors, partly because of the flagship-type build enabled by the glass on the back. Whether or not its spec sheet and the real-world user experience justify the price tag, well, our review will reveal everything, so stay tuned!

Samsung has made plenty of upgrades to justify the Galaxy A54 5G’s increased price, like the glass back, the flagship-level autofocus on the rear camera, the brighter display, and, at least on paper, the more powerful Exynos chip. But Samsung’s failure to optimize the software to take advantage of the new chip, and its failure in fixing the intermittent stutter and lag in the phone’s performance that plagued last year’s Galaxy A53 5G, makes it incredibly hard to suggest the Galaxy A54 5G right now. I’m sure a few software updates will iron out the performance kinks (and perhaps improve battery life, which is not as great as Samsung claims it is) like they did on the A53, and the price will drop a bit too and retailers will offer some discounts to further sweeten the deal. For now, though, you might want to skip the A54 5G. If you buy it regardless of the issues, your user experience will be mostly good, but you won’t be getting enough value for money. Not to mention that we can’t ignore how the Galaxy A54 5G is priced a little too close to devices like Samsung’s own Galaxy S21 FE. In fact, retailers like Amazon offer discounts that bring the S21 FE’s price below what Samsung is charging for the A54 5G in many markets, such as India. And the S21 FE is virtually better in every way (as long as you’re okay with it being eligible for one less major OS upgrade because it launched a year earlier and its lack of expandable storage), and it simply makes more sense for anyone looking to buy a new phone right away.

If you’re a heavy smartphone gamer or prioritize performance above all else, then we don’t recommend the Galaxy A54 – instead, consider options like iQOO Neo 7 or OnePlus 11R. However, if you value overall user experience over benchmark numbers, then the Galaxy A54 is worth considering. With its smooth and stable software experience, IP67 rating, 4 years of promised Android updates and compact form factor – the Galaxy A54 offers more than just a plain specs sheet.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G struggled in some of our battery tests, resulting in an overall score that was just below our database average, but still much better than its predecessor. The autonomy performances were quite good, with the 5000 mAh battery lasting 2.5 days when used moderately. When testing on-the-go and individual usages, the performances were average. However, the Galaxy A54 5G showed very good autonomy when using the GPS outdoors, but poor results when listening to music. The charging experience of the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G was limited by its 25W charger. Even if the charging power surpassed this 25W, the charging time was slightly below average at only 1 hour and 40 minutes. The autonomy recovered after a quick 5-minute charge was also low, which contributed to its below-average score. The A54 5G’s efficiency was weak, mainly due to poor charge efficiency. The discharge currents were average overall, except for navigation, which was good, but poor for music streaming, indicating that the device is not perfectly optimized. Compared with other devices from the High-End segment, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G still ranked below average. Its slightly above-average autonomy in this segment was offset by its poor charging experience and a low efficiency score.

With an overall score of 133, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G did well in our DXOMARK Audio tests for a device in its class, but left some room for improvement. Overall audio quality has improved over its predecessors in the A-series, with consistent performance across use cases in both playback and recording. Playback through the built-in speakers sounded punchy with nice bass, but it could become a little harsh at high volume settings. A54 audio recordings offered a pleasant tonal balance and were almost free of unwanted artifacts. However, wind or loud background noises could have a detrimental effect on recording quality, reducing intelligibility quite noticeably. Overall recording results were best with the main camera, but performances with the front camera and memo app were decent as well.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G’s display performance was very average. The device’s highlight was watching HDR10 videos on its screen because of the good color rendering, particularly the midtones, which emphasized details. However, it was not possible to view Ultra-High Definition (UHD) 60 fps content on this device. The device’s High Brightness Mode performance indicated that that feature could use some tuning. When the device was used outdoors, the screen image would be affected by color casts and inconsistencies in image rendering.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G delivered an average performance for a device in the High-End segment in our DXOMARK Camera tests. Still images were well exposed in good light without too much contrast, making the Samsung a decent option for landscape photography. However, our testers noticed white balance and exposure instabilities across consecutive shots, as well as a range of unwanted image artifacts, including ghosting and halo effects. A slow autofocus in low light was an additional limiting factor, making it difficult to react quickly and capture moving subjects.

I’m literally rushing the review for you guys so you can be informed about the product before purchasing. Once I have the price, I’ll come back here and update the review – so remember to check back. However, I do recommend you check out our review of the Galaxy A34 5G before making your purchase of the A54. That A34 is an interesting one.

Seldom are mid-range phones as memorable as their flagship counterparts, but Samsung's Galaxy A series – and its A5X devices in particular – are often notable entrants into the mid-range market each year; unquestionably serving as some of the best Samsung phones money can buy. They've seen a lot of success in past generations, with both the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A51 being among the best-selling phones in the world, in their respective launch years; making the arrival of this newest entry for 2023 – the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G – all the more significant. A few days shy of a year on from the introduction of the Galaxy A53, Samsung showcased both the Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G alongside one another, hoping to rejuvenate the company's presence in the mid-range phone market by once again offering trickle-down premium features and long battery life in a stylish package that costs around half as much as the flagships they take inspiration from. As the numbering suggests, it's the A54 that's the fuller-featured off these two latest A-series entrants; with a more premium build, more competent cameras and more power at its disposal.

For the price, the Galaxy A54 5G does offer you a decent value and in our opinion, it is actually a major upgrade over its predecessor in almost every aspect. While the charging speeds and power under the hood aren’t its forte, the Galaxy A54 5G does shine in the software segment, with its battery life and its cameras as well.

The upgraded build quality of the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is a nice selling point, offering the feel of a much more premium phone in a mid-range package, and the promises of upgraded performance and better battery life certainly sound tempting, but I’ll reserve my verdict for the full review in the coming weeks.

It's not been long since the more obviously impressive Galaxy S23 series arrived, but Samsung's still managed to turn our heads with the Galaxy A54. The cheaper phone's specs are catching up with those of flagship phones, while its price remains relatively stable. It could be hard to justify buying an S23 when you get the same main camera, display refresh rate and resolution, but a larger display and battery, in the Galaxy A54. We'll be taking a closer look at the Galaxy A54's performance when we get it in for testing, as it could be its key weakness against both flagship and other mid-range phone rivals. Plus, while its main camera is an effective-looking sensor, the other cameras, which remain unchanged, could let it down in an overall photo comparison. There's still a couple of weeks to go until you can buy either the Galaxy A54 or Galaxy A34, so it's worth waiting for our upcoming reviews before deciding to buy. But based on the strength of the spec sheets and our first impressions alone, it seems like the Galaxy A54 should be a contender for the best cheap phone title.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G will be available in four colours: Awesome Graphite, Awesome White, Awesome Lime and Awesome Violet. The 128GB model will be retailing for £449, while the 256GB will cost you £499. The A54 5G still has some work to do to fully justify the increase in price, with the cameras especially remaining a relatively unknown quantity. On first impressions, however, there’s a lot to like here. The build and display appear to be, if not better than, at least as good as the A53 5G, and the newer chipset should produce better speeds and power efficiency. We’ll have the full rundown with our review soon, so keep an eye out for our final verdict on the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G in the near future.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G and A34 5G just launched and my hands-on review shows off the camera tech, OneUI 5.1 features and specs. The UK price starts from £349 for the Galaxy A34 5G and £449 for the Samsung A54 5G, with a release date of April 25 2023. That A34 5G uses Mediatek's Dimensity 1080 and the Samsung A54 5G has that Exynos 1380, which apparently offers a slight performance boost in early benchmarking. I'll be testing them in real life and with lots of gaming to see if it makes a difference! Both of these mid-range smartphones serve up a familiar S23 design, although the A34 is larger at 6.6-inches vs 6.4. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G upgrades the back to Gorilla Glass 5, while both are water resistant. That camera tech is completely different, however. You get a larger sensor with bigger pixels on the Samsung A54, for improved low light photography. Whether this works, you'll have to wait for my full review to see! The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G may sport a smaller display but it's the same slick Super AMOLED tech with 120Hz refresh and 1000 nits brightness. You have a stereo speaker setup, microSD support and years of OS updates too.

On first inspection, the Galaxy A34 and A54 get closer than ever to distilling the essence of Samsung’s flagship phones into much more affordable packages. They’ve got punchy displays, big batteries and designs you’ve got to pay very close attention to in order to tell you aren’t looking at a Galaxy S23. Water resistance, in-display fingerprint sensors and the latest version of Samsung’s OneUI interface are all welcome inclusions for the cash, and expandable storage is something you won’t even find on a top-tier Galaxy nowadays. The Galaxy A34’s higher display refresh rate now makes it a more direct rival to the Google Pixel 6a, and the Galaxy A54’s performance advantage should carry more gamer appeal. Each comes at a premium compared to mid-range models from rival brands, but they look like cost-effective upgrades for Samsung fans.

I like the look of the new Samsung Galaxy A54 range, especially the camera array on the back which is in-line, design-wise, with the Samsung Galaxy S23 range. Sure, there are some features missing and I will have to test the phone in anger to see if that processor can give the performance I want from a mid-range smartphone, but I couldn’t help but be impressed by the camera specs and that bright screen. Samsung has missed a trick with the colours, though. If you opt for the lesser-specced Samsung Galaxy A34 range, then you can get a fantastic gradient silver colour which is much more ‘awesome’ than the colours available on the A54. But this is a small niggle compared to the better battery life and the promise of improved photography. Price-wise, it’s not as desirable as last year’s models with the Samsung Galaxy A54 beginning at £449 - missing that all-important £400 price point. Availability is later this month.

At the end of the day, the Galaxy A54 5G is a fresh coat of paint to a successful product that is seeing heated competition. We like the new design styling, we appreciate the new processor that finally feels adequate and not as jerky as before, and we like what Samsung has done with the cameras. Of course, this is not an ideal phone, it's a budget one, and the list of compromises includes the lack of wireless charging, slower chip than on rivals and the fact that while software support is long, you also need to wait a lot longer for each of those updates. What do you think about the Galaxy A54 5G? Is it a good-enough upgrade, or would you rather go with the Google Pixel A series, an iPhone or something completely different?

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G makes quite a few moves to offer an appealing package for anyone who can't quite stretch to buying a flagship phone - and coming in at around half the price, it represents good value for money. The shift in design makes it hard to distinguish from the flagship phone and that's likely to be popular: design needn't be a barrier to buying a Galaxy A device. There's a great display with plenty of brightness and offering 120Hz, while we except the updated internals to offer a nice smooth performance for day-to-day use, backed by a decent battery life. Of course we still need to fully test and explore what the Galaxy A54 5G has to offer, but first impressions are positive.
