Mono speaker, no charger included, slow charging, not the most advanced chipset for the money... But Samsung Galaxy M53 is the "brainchild" of a top brand with its advantages, such as a gorgeous 120 Hz AMOLED display, super-thin body, high quality shooting, convenient One UI shell. Performance is also enough for all basic tasks. So the answer to the question whether it is reasonable to overpay for it is definitely yes! But not necessarily, there are plenty of cheaper competitors.

2022 is shaping up as a sad year for midrangers, with Samsung ones particularly unexciting next to their 2021 counterparts. Such was the case with the Galaxy A53, and this is how we feel about the M53 as well. Mind you, despite the missing charger and what is effectively a chipset downgrade, it's not a bad phone in isolation. It's got a great display, battery life to spare, latest software and a decently capable camera system with some caveats when it comes to video or low light. But phones should be getting better each year, and that's not the case with the Galaxy M53. We'd agree with Samsung's choices if there were no alternative options, or the price was different. But some two months after release, the M53 still feels expensive. With apparently no shortage of supply of the objectively better models from last year (at lower prices, too), the M53 is a Galaxy we can't recommend.

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is an easy recommendation for those who value build quality, design and screen performance the most. It is a robust yet lightweight device with a classy look; something that isn’t too common at this price point. Despite these strengths, the Samsung Galaxy M53’s shortcomings cannot be ignored. The camera performance, especially low light photography, isn’t as consistent as some competitors such as the OnePlus Nord CE 2 and Realme 9 Pro+ offer. Additionally, if gaming is your priority, the phone doesn’t offer sustained performance under intensive workloads.

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G smartphone is an excellent successor to the Galaxy M52. With this phone, you are getting a decent screen with a fast refresh rate, powerful performance, above-average camera support, ample battery optimization, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and more things in its arsenal. But at the same time, the phone also has some flaws. For instance, you won’t get a charger inside the box, and the sound experience with this phone is pretty dull. In that case, you can check out other alternative phones; such as the OnePlus CE 2 and Oppo F21 5G. Both of them are a great deal, but if you are specifically looking for all-rounder features, the OnePlus CE 2 can be considered a superb deal. But in the end, it’s up to you to choose as per your preference.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is a fairly decent phone for the price with some areas for improvement. The smartphone offers decent performance and longer battery life, but departments like the camera should have been optimised better in my opinion. The design also looks boring but the build quality is top-notch. As per company policy, none of the new Samsung phones offer a charging brick in the box, but considering the price of the Galaxy M53 5G, I would have liked to see a Type C charger in the box. Should you buy it? Samsung loyalists should definitely go for this one, as per their budget, but consumers looking for a phone with outstanding cameras can opt for the Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G. The Galaxy M53 5G offers decent performance, but for gamers, the Realme GT 5G makes more sense at the price point.

Okay, let’s wrap up this review of the Samsung Galaxy M53 now. From everything I’ve discussed so far, it’s clear as day that this phone is not as impressive as I initially thought it would be. Above all else, Samsung’s biggest selling point in the mid-range segment has always been the cameras. But unfortunately, this guy doesn’t live up to those expectations. Maybe that’s because Samsung hasn’t optimized the Dimensity chip well, or maybe it’s something else. Whatever the reason, the M53 needs a lot of work in the camera department. And compared to the Galaxy M52, even the performance is somewhat of a downgrade here. So if you’re looking to buy a reliable mid-range phone right now, the M53 just doesn’t make any sense as long as Samsung is still selling the M52. That too at a cheaper price! On the other hand, the Realme 9 Pro+ is still a great option in this segment! Or if you’re shopping for something that’s better-looking, has a longer software commitment, and even an official IP rating, then the Galaxy A33 is also a decent alternative—especially since it has received a healthy price cut since the launch.

Alright, verdict time. As mentioned at the beginning of this review, both the Galaxy M53 5G and the Galaxy M52 5G are available for purchase at the time of this writing. Which one should you pick up? Well, the answer’s short and sweet: If you’re okay with the fact that you won’t get OS upgrades past Android 13, there’s pretty much no reason to get the Galaxy M53. Even if you do care about getting newer software out of the box, I’d still say the M52 is the better pick. The M53’s 108MP camera simply does not give you any tangible benefits, and its MediaTek processor isn’t as good as the M52’s Snapdragon chip, especially for gaming. The M53 also misses out on NFC support (so no card support in Samsung Pay), and thanks to the processor downgrade, it lacks Wi-Fi 6 support, as well. Samsung’s basically shooting itself in the foot here by keeping both models on sale, and the M53 5G seems to exist just because Samsung can’t fight the urge to launch a new handset every few months, whether it truly brings any meaningful upgrades or not.

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is an incremental upgrade over the Galaxy M52 5G. It looks premium and sports capable hardware. One of the main things working in favour of the Galaxy M53 5G is the guarantee of Android OS and security updates, which should keep it relevant longer than some of its direct competitors. In my opinion, the 6GB RAM variant offers much better value for money than the 8GB variant. I also think Samsung should have bundled a 25W charger, given the phone's price. If you're still not convinced about the Galaxy M53 5G, you should pay attention to its competitors in this segment. The Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G (Review) could be a great alternative as it has not only a 120Hz AMOLED display and a 108-megapixel camera, but also the more powerful Dimensity 920 SoC and a significantly faster 120W charger is bundled in the box. Those looking for a great smartphone camera should consider the Realme 9 Pro+ (Review). If you have budget constraints, the Mi 11i and the Realme GT Master Edition make for good alternatives to the Galaxy M53 5G.

The Galaxy M53 5G is a device that delivers on most of its promises. The display, the performance, and the camera are all acceptable. But given the price at which it is operating, nothing here really stands out. The competition has cameras with similar specifications and many of them do perform better than Galaxy M53 and are available at a lower price. This is not to say the Galaxy M53’s camera is terrible, but rather that as a reviewer you are still looking for that one stand out point. At this particular price point (Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000), Samsung faces competition from the Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge which comes with 120W fast charging, and the V23 series, which has a more stylish design to name just two. There’s also the Galaxy A53 5G which costs Rs 32,999 and might seem like a better pick given the design and overall experience. The problem for the Galaxy M53 5G is that competition seems to be a tad more appealing.

With a beautiful design and vibrant display, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is a joy to use and delivers smooth performance and good camera quality. I was satisfied with the overall performance. It didn’t show any signs of slowing down and stood tall with my everyday tasks. The battery can also easily handle day-to-day work. There are also some shortcomings like the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo speakers. Additionally, it might not be suitable for heavy gaming but light gaming is handled easily. The absence of a charger in the box will put some extra bucks on your shopping list. For its price of less than Rs 25,000, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G delivers good looks and performance.

If you are a gamer, a content creator, a hobbyist photographer or have very specific taste in fashion and want a smartphone that can fulfill your needs, then Samsung Galaxy M53 5G may not be the right smartphone for you. In that case, you can refer to the several smartphones mentioned above. The Samsung Galaxy M53 does come with its glaring shortcomings. But despite them, it is a really good smartphone in its price range. And that is because of Samsung’s overall value addition. At Rs. 24,000, you get a smartphone that has a good design, ahead-of-the-segment display, decent performance, good enough cameras and a good battery life. For most consumers, that package is not bad at all. But add on top the reliability factor of Samsung – the intuitive and customizable interface, the brand value, the Knox security and consistent performance – and it becomes a really good smartphone to buy. Samsung appeals to a certain demographic which prefers a minimalist looking, all rounder smartphone. And if you have been looking for a jack-of-all-trades sort of a smartphone, then Samsung Galaxy M53 will not disappoint you.

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G comes with several Samsung and Google apps preinstalled. It also has a lot of bloatware, some of which can bombard you with spammy notifications. You can simply uninstall the apps you won't use to reduce clutter. In my limited time with the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G, I found general performance to be good. It did not show any sign of lag and was able to keep up with my usage. At this point, I can say that the Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 price segment has some promising phones and that the Galaxy M53 5G should make a good addition. However, the only way to know for sure whether this is a worthy smartphone or not is by reviewing it, which is what I'll be doing soon, so stay tuned for the full review coming soon only on Gadgets 360.

The Galaxy M53 is an easy recommendation to immerse yourselves into a world of visual media thanks to its Super AMOLED panel at the helm. Diving into super processor intrinsic tasks, like BGMI, is certainly not a piece of cake but if your requirements are not in the realm of mobile gaming, the M53 won’t disappoint. I do take some issue though with the unnecessary throttling of the chipset’s peak performance. On the other hand, it is a small price to pay for the super slim build of the device. Camera quality, at least in daylight conditions, is very good and battery life is decent enough along with the software interface. If it is performance that you are after, options from Realme, iQOO, and others can sufficiently meet your needs.
