At the cost of $239.99 this tablet brings some nice features to its price range. It’s a nice size for viewing content as well as a quick game. Its ability to change display modes to make it more of a eReader at times is a nice touch. The battery life is pretty sufficient and should get you thru a casual day of usage. The fact it has Verizon 5G support ups its ability to be used anywhere but also this makes it exclusive to them locking out any other carriers.

At $239.99, the TCL Tab 10 NXTPAPER 5G is priced well for everything it can do. Again, I think it makes the most sense to compare this against other eBook readers. A Kobo Libra Colour costs $219 but has a locked-down ecosystem. The same goes for the Kindle Scribe, which costs far more at $419.99. The Tab 10 is a little of each of these and a little of its own thing. The TCL Tab 10 NXTPAPER 5G can also be tied to your Verizon account to add 5G service—I wasn’t joking when I called it the Hitchhiker’s Guide! The main downside to this that I can see is that aftermarket accessories are pretty thin and mostly consist of generic “adjustable” tablet folios.

The only Android tablets I’ve enjoyed using over the past few years have been Samsung’s high-end Galaxy Tab’s. I haven’t seen many Android tablets in the budget space that are worth looking at. The TCL TAB 10 NXTPAPER 5G has changed that. This is a nice little tablet for reading, social media, and nighttime use. It’s not a powerhouse, it can do some gaming and other tasks. But it really shines as a reader and social media machine.

The TCL Tab 10 Nxtpaper 5G doesn’t win on any one merit. Its display technology is interesting, compelling even, but imperfect. It would be a lot easier to recommend if text didn’t look so soft, but that issue still doesn’t prevent the tablet from being quite serviceable for reading and quite a bit more. The performance may not be impressive, but it never held the tablet back from casual use cases. The 128GB of storage, microSD support, and 5G connection are also no small benefits for this budget tablet. And when you set it down next to another low-priced competitor, like the Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet, it starts to look like a worthy upgrade. With that in mind, the TCL Tab 10 Nxtpaper 5G opens itself up to tough competition from the iPad if the 5G connection and storage capabilities aren’t important.

The TCL Tab 10 NXTPAPER 5G has a unique nano-etched NXTPAPER 3.0 technology that reduces eye strain and also feels like paper when scribbling with a stylus. With 5G connectivity, you can watch, game, and work on the go. Even the battery life is impressive, and at 10 inches it's essentially the perfect size.

The TCL Tab 10 Nxtpaper 5G tablet is available at Verizon for $239 prepaid or $6.66 monthly for 36 months. TCL sells a T-Pen Stylus for $40, and I'll be picking one up as well. Verizon plans start at $30 monthly, which certainly isn't cheap, making the data plan option best suited for those who often use the tablet on the go, outside the comforts of Wi-Fi. I'm keeping the TCL Tab 10 Nxtpaper, data plan or not, because I use it mainly around the house. If I use a tablet or laptop somewhere without Wi-Fi, I'm okay using my iPhone as a hotspot.

We applaud TCL for trying something different with its budget-friendly Tab 10 Nxtpaper tablet and largely enjoy its versatile, E Ink-like screen. Moreover, we're fans of its competitive performance, 5G connectivity, and genuinely useful software enhancements. That said, the tablet's middling battery life and limited software upgrade commitment give us pause. The 5G-capable Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ offers a larger screen, better software support, and superior battery life for just slightly more money, so it remains our Editors' Choice winner for affordable Android tablets.
