The Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s display experience was average for an Ultra-premium device. The display was fine for viewing photos in indoor conditions, with the screen delivering good color rendering. However, outdoors under sunlight, the color rendering was very unnatural. Viewing HDR10 content was somewhat bothersome because of the screen’s inaccurate tone mapping and low brightness. The highlight of the display experience on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra was surfing the web because of its smooth interactions and its 120 Hz refresh rate.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s DXOMARK Audio score of 129 is average for a device in its class. In Playback, it is most suited for listening to music, achieving slightly lower scores in the gaming and movie use cases. Dynamics could be more accurate but are overall impactful. Good wideness and localizability are accompanied by a nice high-end extension and bass. Sound is pretty much free of artifacts as well. Areas with potential for improvement include an inconsistent timbre, aggressive sound, and sub-optimal tonal balance when gaming, and an inaccurate stereo image. The 12S Ultra does quite well across all use cases as a recording device. Recordings feature great timbre with natural tonal balance, as well as excellent spatial and dynamics rendition. Wind noise reduction does a good job at retaining intelligibility in windy conditions. However, our testers also noted overall too much compression and distortion, and the results of the audio zoom feature are overall underwhelming. Some background rejection is achieved but this is paid for by a loss of bass and low-midrange as well as a decrease in volume consistency.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the Chinese brand’s latest flagship phone, featuring an impressive spec sheet, which includes a WQHD+ TrueColor display and Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 top-end chipset for plenty of processing power. Special emphasis has been put on camera performance and design. The 12S Ultra comes with a leatherette-style material on the back, mimicking the look and feel of a serious camera. The large Leica-badged camera hides a lens array that offers a 50MP 1-inch image sensor in the primary camera, 48MP resolution on the other camera modules, and a long tele lens with 120mm equivalent focal length. Users can also choose between two Leica image presets that offer either a more vibrant or more subdued color response and contrast curve. We put the Xiaomi 12S Ultra through our rigorous DXOMARK Camera test suite to measure its performance in photo, video, and zoom quality from an end-user perspective.

While we normally try not to put too much weight into benchmarking scores, when we are comparing high-end smartphones, it helps to discern which is serving up the best performance on paper. In the case of the 12S Ultra, that performance also translates to the in-hand experience. The only remaining element to consider is cost. This 8GB RAM/256GB storage model is recommended to retail for 6 499 Chinese Yuan (~R16 146). We can only speculate what the local price tag would be, but given the performance on offer, there is certainly room to justify picking one of these up, especially if it’s in line with what we have seen from the likes of Samsung and its premium flagship phones.

In a smartphone world, populated by glass flagships from brands starting with an A or an S, it’s very refreshing to see a leather-back 1-inch camera phone that’s situated at the end of the alphabet (see what I did there, Xiaomi?). Truth be told, Xiaomi is one of the brands that drive smartphone innovation, no matter what other letters in the alphabet are trying to convince you in. From second screens inside the camera bump to super-fast charging and the latest in smartphone camera technology. The Xiaomi 12S looks and feels like a true flagship, even after the limited time spent with the device. The only real problem here is the global availability of the model, and let’s hope it launches outside China at some point, because competition is always good for everybody.

Our testers did not observe any strong artifacts in the 12S Ultra’s video footage. Overall, it is one of the best devices in this category that we have seen to date. Our testers barely noticed ringing, moiré, and color fringing. Thanks to the fast 60fps frame rate, the judder effect is especially well under control, making for very smooth panning shots.

The Xiaomi 12s Ultra is a showcase piece that highlights just how far Xiaomi has come as a brand and a smartphone maker. Partnerships with Leica and Harmon Kardon, world-first camera tech, and excellent real-world results make the phone a mighty option. While it's no doubt frustrating that it isn't available in the West, it should ensure photography enthusiasts keep Xiaomi firmly in their sights going into 2023.

The 12S Ultra comes with meaningful upgrades over its predecessor, including a bold design at the back and a leather finish. The 120Hz AMOLED screen is among the best on Android, the phone is ideally suited for gaming, and the gigantic 1-inch camera at the back takes outstanding photos. Xiaomi's camera efforts have picked up an additional boost thanks to the Leica partnership, and overall, the 12S Ultra offers one of the strongest packages today. That said, the phone is limited to China, and you don't get the Play Store out of the box.

We really can’t give a fair shake for the Xiaomi 12s Ultra yet since the lendout period for the device was quite short and the fact that our unit featured China ROM but we do like what we’re seeing so far. One of our biggest concerns when it comes to Xiaomi smartphones when we get them in for review is that we know that they tend to compromise on camera performance, which is defintiely not the case here. It looks like they have the final piece of the puzzle sorted out with the Xiaomi 12s Ultra and it’s actually pretty interesting to see how far they can push their mobile photography game now that they have Leica as a powerful ally. The only downside we can see so far is the pricing for this phone isn’t the usual bang-for-your-buck pricing that we usually associate with Xiaomi prodcuts. However, we do understand the reason behind it.

Overall, though, I really liked shooting with the 12S Ultra, and I let myself trust it in more situations than I would with another smartphone camera. That might not be totally fair, either. I think knowing that I was working with a bigger sensor convinced me to use it in more ways than I would another phone camera. Even so, it stood up to a lot of these use cases surprisingly well, like taking a photo of my husband tossing our kid in the air or using portrait mode in less than amazing light with a moving subject. I got a lot more keepers than I expected in both of those situations.

Compare to other flagship phones available in the market, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra smartphone does sound like a superb deal. It includes impressive hardware and software combinations with elegant camera quality. The phone is worth your money as you are getting the latest android, powerful chipset, decent display, great battery life, and amazing camera setup. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is an all-rounder phone when in it comes to overall usage. But the same thing can’t be said for the android updates, usually, the company delays for months and if updates are your main priority, then the Samsung Galaxy S22 ultra can consider a wonderful deal that comes with 4 years of software updates and awesome specs.

In China and Hong Kong, the phone is an absolutely easy recommendation due to it being priced lower than a Galaxy S22 Ultra or iPhone 13 Pro Max. But those who import will have to pay a markup that brings the prices closer. I can see from Reddit threads and YouTube comments that many enthusiasts are already importing this phone. But for less hardcore readers, they’re better holding off and see if Xiaomi releases this globally.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra has put us in a weird spot. On the one hand, it's easily one of the best cameraphones, and a lot of our excitement does stem from that main unit that you can't get elsewhere. It's a competent smartphone outside of imaging, too, thanks to a wonderful display, class-leading chipset performance, some of the best speakers in a non-gaming flagship, and good battery life as top-tier handsets go. It doesn't hurt that all of this is packaged in a bold-looking yet stylish body. That said, we found some missteps in the camera system - all of them petty, none of them dealbreakers, and none about the main unit, essentially. And while the whole China-only shadow was always looming over our perception of the phone, the fact that the camera wasn't perfect was enough to downgrade our enthusiasm from 'woohoo, gray-import one and live with the Chinese software' to something more along the lines of 'you know, maybe wait a year'.

After Xiaomi MIX pioneered the era of full screen, Xiaomi 12S Ultra can be said to have once again “exploded”, offering a very luxurious image feast, and it can even be said to be a milestone in the history of mobile phone imaging. In other respects, Samsung E5 LTPO’s 2K primary color screen, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, X-axis linear motor, etc. are all at the top flagship level. If you are a deep lover of mobile phone photography, want to pursue a professional Leica style, and have the ultimate pursuit of mobile phone performance, then this Xiaomi Mi 12S Ultra, full of images, performance, and experience, will be your “dream” Central Intelligence Machine”.

Qualcomm Adreno 730:
