Amazon Fire Phone and the iPhone 6 are both well-made handsets that offer decent performance. The iPhone is the better performer, as you might expect with the price difference. Beyond that we would recommend the iPhone if you want a phone that can be a productivity tool as well as a consumption and communication device. Go for the Fire Phone if you want to shop, shop, shop. Much like the Kindle Fire tablets, the Fire Phone’s primary function is to act as a gateway to Amazon’s ecosystem. At times the device feels like a shopping basket masquerading as a smartphone - and one that's not built for enterprise usage. While there are plenty of software and hardware differences between the Fire Phone and its high-end Android rivals, none really offer the meat to compensate for the usability issues.

Amazon has had plenty of time to bring out a decent smartphone and certainly deep enough pockets to do its research. In many ways, the Fire phone is likable. The camera and hardware are solid and there are elements of the OS we started to appreciate. Android could do with a bit of streamlining in places.

Even though you can get it free on contract, the Fire phone isn't as cheap as we had expected. For a similar contract price, or even when bought SIM-free, you could have a flagship Android phone such as the LG G3. If you're comparing specifications, the Fire phone looks distinctly mid-range.

It just doesn’t make a great deal of sense for most people. Its key feature, that array of front cameras, is spectacularly pointless after the first five minutes. And while some may claim it’s a simpler and more accessible alternative to other Androids, we found it a good deal trickier to get on with. It’s not that simple, it’s not intuitive, and the alternatives it offers for Google’s app suite just aren’t as good.

For roughly the same money, you could have a flagship Android smartphone or for a little more per month on contract, a brand new iPhone. If you're looking purely as specs, the Fire phone is fairly mid-range. The deal is sweetened by a year of free Amazon Prime, though, which would otherwise cost you £79 and includes next-day delivery and the Instant Video streaming service. So the Fire phone has a few things going for it, but asking people to get to grips with a new operating system, deal with the limited app store and still pay top dollar for it is a bold move indeed. Ultimately, the safe option is to plump for an Android device such as the LG G3.

Amazon would have you think the Fire Phone is a mobile revolution, a complete rethink of how an Android smartphone should be made. It’s not: it’s just another phone with a so-so build that seems to do things differently just to spite Google rather than to help customers. Nor is it the affordable option the company would have you believe, at £399 on Pay As You Go. Unless you really need Mayday, the similar-sized Motorola Moto G represents much better value, and still lets you use Kindle and the Amazon Appstore on the go.

Ultimately, the Amazon Fire Phone is a deeply frustrating and woefully misconceived handset. Apart from being a cynical money-making machine for Amazon, its clunky OS is difficult to use and offers no benefit over Android or iOS. The Dynamic Perspective display is a needless gimmick and its Firefly camera isn't good enough to rival services elsewhere. It's also expensive, even if you do get a free year of Amazon Prime thrown in as a vague sweetener. It's not broken per se, but you should avoid this at all costs.

Amazon's Fire Phone is a decent attempt at selling more Amazon goods and services, but it's hardly a smartphone worth considering if you're not already invested in Amazon's ecosystem. If you're looking for flexibility in an operating system (customization, great apps, etc.) and you want top-end specs to boot, consider an Android flagship smartphone or older iPhone. They cost the same as the Fire Phone.

From a design standpoint, it’s a sharp smartphone. It’s understated and classy, with minimal branding and a solid feel. The 4.7-inch display should’ve been a 1080p panel (as it stands, the native resolution is pegged at 1280 x 720), but at least Amazon is including a full 32GB of internal storage on its base model. Unfortunately, the phone is only available through AT&T, which complicates things further.

We were curious when Amazon announced their Fire phone, and intrigued by the Dynamic Perspective and Firefly features that Amazon claims sets its handset apart from other flagship smartphones. So we bought a Fire phone to test and show you how those features work--or rather, how they don't really work well. Here's why we couldn't wait to return this phone for a refund after testing.

Amazon takes this to an entirely new level with the Fire Phone, to the point that if you're shopping and content consumption habits do not revolve around Amazon.com Kindle, Prime Video, Amazon MP3, and you have no intentions of that becoming the case, it’s very difficult to recommend the Fire Phone. At times the device appears like a handheld personal shopping tool that just happens to have cellular capabilities.

I could go on and talk about all the standard smartphone measures -- the Fire Phone's performance is somewhat choppy, its battery life is on the lower end of average, its call quality is fine and its camera is pretty decent -- but at this point, all of that seems rather inconsequential. There are just so many fundamental things wrong with this device that, for most people, it's impossible to recommend. The Fire Phone is ultimately a collection of random ideas that don't come together to create any type of cohesive or compelling user experience. Its operating system is confusing and difficult to use, its Dynamic Perspective feature is gimmicky and counterproductive and its prominent integration with Amazon makes it feel more like a pushy salesperson than a user-focused tool.

Dynamic Perspective and Firefly are interesting features that will only get better with more supported apps and when more products are added into Amazon’s analysis database. I expect those features to improve greatly by the time Fire Phone 2 and 3 roll around. But right now, the rest of Fire OS 3.5 drags the Fire Phone down.

That said, there’s certainly a lot to like here. Those who value fresh ideas, those not bullied into demanding conformity by the overwhelming cynicism of the jaded tech world, will appreciate the freshness the Fire Phone brings to a slowly stagnating space. For reading, for shopping, for existing within Amazon’s special corner of the internet, it literally doesn’t get any better than this. And for everything else … well, there’s always version two.

If you have never played with an Amazon device before, the Fire Phone will take you a while to master. It's an average looking phone with a couple nifty tricks either meant to sell you things or dazzle your eyes, but other than that, it's nothing worth bragging about. Keep in mind Amazon has an agenda: it wants to sell more goods and push Prime. And the Fire Phone is the company's latest way of achieving that goal. Despite a gazillion sensors and Dynamic Display to get you all excited about the idea of using the Fire Phone as your everyday device, Amazon only really cares about whether you use the Firefly app to buy stuff on Amazon.com.

This is a phone for Amazon’s whales, the very top customers. Just like how you had to be an Apple die-hard to pay $600 for the first-gen iPhone, this first Fire Phone will be the most tempting for people all-in with Amazon for everything from shopping to ebooks to TV shows. Even though this is a respectable first showing, I think Amazon will keep improving both the design and the software polish, and hopefully the Appstore will mature at the same time. Then the Fire Phone has the potential to go from a phone to delight Prime customers to a delightful phone that will make new Prime customers.

You buy iPhones for the ease-of-use, the app ecosystem, and the design language. You buy Android phones for the freedom of choice and the tinkerability. You’d buy this phone for the free Amazon Prime and a quick fix for shoppin’ fever. It’s not a bad phone, it just isn’t in the same league as a top-tier Android phone or iPhone. When you look past its purchasing powers and its fringe benefits—which can’t be ignored—what you have left is a relatively unexciting handset.

Instead, it's left to features like Dynamic Perspective and Firefly to sell the Fire Phone, and while they're clever, they're not yet convincing must-haves. In a way, it feels like Amazon tried to make its smartphone too many things: both a smaller gateway to its virtual aisles for your pocket, and a feature-pushing flagship differentiated on more than just software and services. The Amazon Fire Phone is good, but it's neither the home-run nor the game-changer that many were expecting.

Amazon’s current generation Fire HD 10 may be one of the most powerful tablets the company currently offers but it’s price, specifications, and benchmark scores show this is really a budget tablet with direct ties to Amazon’s ecosystem. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing it’s just important to know what you’re getting into with this device.

There are inexpensive tablets, and there are cheap tablets. A chintzy design, low-resolution display, lackluster cameras and sluggish performance make the Amazon Fire 10 feel less than the sum of its parts. For less money, the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 has a higher-resolution screen, better design and much longer battery life.

With pixel density that’s years out of date, the Amazon Fire HD 10 just doesn’t offer the screen quality that’ll get us spending upwards of £150. The funny thing is that while the larger display is what’ll get people buying this instead of the Fire tablet or Fire HD 8, those extra inches actually are what make the screen worse.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 doesn’t make any moves that are going to cause people to send the thing back. The sound and battery life are a bit better than you’d expect, the screen is as advertised. However, it’s just not that good, especially when the price is creeping towards the mid-range zone where every single tablet out there offers a far, far better display. It’s the screen resolution that puts me off the most. It's very pixellated.

If, on the other hand, you want something a little more versatile, there are more tempting options. Sacrifice 2in and the Tesco Hudl 2 gives you change, just, from £100. If you’re willing to forgo an inch of screen size, and are happy with a 4:3 ratio, then the Google Nexus 9 is your friend. When it costs £200 from Argos, which it does right now, it’s far more tempting, even to Amazon Prime subscribers like me.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is a 10.1-inch window to Amazon's vast multimedia library. Unfortunately, its clunky form factor, slippery back, and grainy screen don't justify the jump in price over the Fire HD 8, which offers access to the same content but in a much more manageable body. If you're after a more well-rounded tablet, you'll have to shell out some extra cash for the iPad Air 2, which has an unbeatable app experience.

The Amazon Fire tablet, for £50, does what it says on the tin: it’s a tablet designed to deliver you Amazon products for cheap. And it does it pretty well, to be honest, for the low price tag. While it won’t compete with the higher end Amazon Fire tablets, for a first-time buyer who wants to try a slate out, or wants to get something for the kids and is already clued into the Amazon eco-system, it’s a great buy - but by itself, it’s not quite compelling enough.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is a mixed bag, with its design and screen being the most obvious weak points, but respectable real-world performance and an impressive software experience mean that it has a place for certain users. The £169.99 price tag is a little steep for what’s on offer and the keyboard dock adds an additional £99, despite feeling a little flimsy, but if you’re already entrenched in the world of Amazon, this might be worth a look. We’ll pass full judgement come the full review.

In conclusion, as at the beginning, we can only say that Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10 is a device with loads of stuff done right, but amazingly the one or two key things done very poorly. The interface is better than ever before on an Amazon tablet, the MediaTek SoC performs really well for what it is, the tablet is incredibly thin and light and the company claims it will stand up to abuse. We'll talk more about the specs, the benchmarks, the new Fire OS and other aspects of the device in our full review. Stay tuned.

The Fire HD 10 is one of the cheapest 10in tablets around, but with good reason. Screen quality is only average, performance is mediocre and you’re forced to use Amazon’s Fire OS. While version 5 is a definite improvement over the awful previous releases, it’s still limited compared to vanilla Android and surprisingly buggy at launch. Unless you’re completely invested in the Amazon ecosystem, and have no need for Google apps including Chrome, Maps, YouTube and Drive, you’re signing up for a limited experience.

Like other Amazon tablets before it, the Fire HD 10 only really makes sense if you're immersed - or willing to be - in the retailer's ecosystem, though. Kindle ebooks, Prime video, and the Amazon Appstore are so tightly interwoven into the slate, while it may be possible to supplant them with third-party alternatives, the resulting experience underwhelms. That fact alone will probably decide whether the Fire HD 10 is for you or not. If Amazon is your go-to store, and your primary need for a tablet is content consumption, its an affordable way to carry Bezos' empire around with you. Everyone else would be better served with a more generic Android tablet or an iPad.Only Amazon addicts need apply.

On Fire? Amazon's entry into their tablet ecosystem is inexpensive - in fact, very inexpensive. In Germany, the Fire Tablet (Late 2015) sells for 60 Euro (~$64) via Amazon's online store. What compromises the low-budget 7-inch tablet requires is the subject of our review.

Tablet prices are falling which I am sure everyone knows. The £49 being asked by Amazon for their latest 7"Fire sets a new low price for what is a very powerful Android tablet. So what if anything is not included in this latest offering? The plus points it allows a child to have their own device and content, the older person to get their own computer and to keep in content with others as even a standard phone line cost and call connection charges are scandalous.

For its price, the Amazon Fire is an amazing tablet. Yes, there are plenty of tablets out there that are much better in almost every way, including Amazon's own Fire HD range, but the Fire is great to watch streaming video on. The Amazon Fire isn't a tablet for everyone, despite its all-welcoming £50 price. However, for some, its low price will be justification of its cut-price parts. It isn't slick in operation, the screen is clearly pixellated, and it feels cheap. However, it can happily run virtually any Android game, includes an IPS display, and – unlike ultra-budget tablets of a few years ago – it doesn’t feel as though it might be about to drip battery acid from its seams.

If you’re buying the Fire, then you’ll be doing so for its price. All you need to know is that it’s performance is acceptable. This tablet is slow and has a dreary screen, but it won’t fall over at the drop of the hat and has a good enough battery life to keep the occupants of the backseats of a Volvo entertained all the way to Cornwall.

With such an incredibly low price, the Fire doesn’t really have any competition. The closest match would be the Tesco Hudl 2, which costs twice the price. If you’re looking for a cheap tablet to give to your children, Amazon’s own Kids Edition Fire also costs £100, but includes a heavy duty protective rubber case and two-year worry-free guarantee, arguably making it better value for cautious parents. The new Fire makes sense for anyone looking for a first tablet, though, or a cheap second device for travel, university or for keeping in the kitchen, as long as you’re aware of its limitations.

It doesn’t cost that much and has an 8in screen, which is pretty much the perfect size for a tablet: big enough to dwarf your phone, not so big that you look like a kid playing with an Early Learning Centre toy. A £129 ticket price is sure to get a few people interested, too. However, it’s still not a great choice unless you’re yet to lay eyes on a single ‘good’ tablet.

Amazon really has the market cornered on low-cost tablets. At this price point, there is simply no other competition from a big-name manufacturer. Sure, you can find plenty of third-party bargain bin options while shopping around on, well, Amazon, but I wouldn't count on a reliable hardware or software experience, let alone access to an advanced tech support network. The Fire HD 8 gets you a modest upgrade in terms of screen size, resolution, camera, and processing power, but it costs three times as much as the Fire.

After the disaster that was the Fire Phone, it seems the coin has dropped at Amazon. Fire tablets are not, and never will be, direct competition for devices running Android and iOS. Rather they should be cost-effective machines designed primarily to access your Amazon content and for general media consumption. Everything else people are doing on their Android or iPhone mobiles and that’s a party Amazon is never going to gatecrash. Looked at in that light, the HD 8 makes some sense though I’d be happier if £130 got you the 16GB advert-free version.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is a "family" tablet. That’s a double-edged term, and one that naturally limits expectations about how high-end any part of it will be. Sure enough, the Amazon Fire HD 8 has a fairly low-res screen – and although slim, its build quality is unlikely to impress. It isn't the zippiest tablet either. However, fairly good battery life and its above-average speakers add a likeable edge to a tablet that might otherwise be easy to dismiss.

The low price tag sounds appealing and whilst initial experiences offered up respectable performance, in the long-run it might not be the most logical purchase in the tablet space as the internal hardware will likely age quickly. We’ll have a better idea of whether that’s the case come the full review. Stay tuned.

Family Fire.

Amazon is doing really well in tablets as they don’t really need to make a profit on them. They view the tablet platform as an on-ramp to their other products and services like books, video, games, store items, apps, music, audiobooks, and magazines. This order of goods is exactly how their UI is laid out, too, which reinforces this position.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is a “good enough” tablet at a great price, making it easy to recommend if £100 is your absolute maximum budget. But Amazon's tablet wasn't designed for business use. The slate's biggest downside is its limited app library, which is missing such key offerings as Microsoft Word and Excel. Other than that, you get what you pay for: decent (but not fast) performance, a bright (but dull) display and a plastic design that feels sturdy but probably isn't as durable as what you get with a pricier tablet. Despite those limitations, this $90 slate is hard to beat for the price.

At just £90 for the basic 16GB version, its excellent battery life, superb build quality and decent performance make it a great choice for those looking to save a bit of money, and it’s a particularly good choice for kids. The latest Fire HD 8 delivers faster performance, a bigger battery and more base storage than the previous version for almost half the price. Its 8-inch screen is bright, the speakers are loud and it offers expandable microSD storage and ample parental controls. Amazon Prime members can access gobs of free video, music and other content with their subscription. Display isn't as sharp as that of current iPad Mini models; to truly take advantage of what the tablet has to offer, you need an Amazon Prime membership; slow charging (takes 6 hours to fully cap battery).

The Amazon Fire HD 8 ticks a lot of the right boxes. It’s affordable, well built and plays back video to an exceptionally high standard. But we’ll say it again – you need Amazon Prime to fully enjoy it. It’s not that it is a complete necessity, but the prominence in the operating system of Amazon’s own apps and services means without a Prime membership it’s a frustrating user experience. This caveat aside, it’s an incredibly priced media consumption tablet that exemplifies Amazon’s place in the low-end market – this over makes it an attractive, interestingly unique option.

The smaller Amazon Fire tablet, at $49.99, is practically an impulse buy. That's a big part of why we give it four stars and our Editors' Choice award. The Fire HD 8, at $89.99, takes a little more thought. It's an inexpensive tablet for consuming media, especially Amazon media, and that can be enough. My daughter, for example, has a tablet she uses exclusively for listening to music, playing Minecraft, looking things up on Wikipedia, and watching Steven Universe on Hulu—and the Fire HD 8 does all of those things. I just hope she doesn't ask for Marvel Unlimited.

At just $49.99, the 2017 Amazon Fire 7 remains the best extreme-budget tablet you can buy. Yes, it has limitations, but no other mainstream brand offers something comparable for the price. It’s an especially good deal if you’re already an Amazon Prime customer, and/or have plenty invested in Amazon digital content. The Fire 7’s simple design and bold, mostly easy-to-follow menus make it a great starter or second tablet for the family. However, we’d recommend going up in price to the Fire HD 8 if you need to view large text or want a tablet that can work better as an e-reader.

The Fire 7 is a very minor update to the 2015 7in Fire tablet. It’s a shame that the processor and cameras haven’t been upgraded, but the low price makes it hard to complain. It remains great value and a great way to use Amazon’s services including video and music – as well as Alexa. The absence of all things Google will be a deal-breaker for some, but it’s an excellent choice for kids or undemanding adults.

While you can find other tablets that cost under $50, most are from no-name companies or are way out of date. When you consider the Fire 7's strong build quality, easy access to Amazon services and dead-simple interface, this tablet is almost in a class by itself. However, to reach this price, Amazon cut several corners, including on screen quality, audio performance and battery life. The slow processor and poor cameras are the most egregious of these downsides.

Yes, there are other cheap tablets out there. You can find them on the shelves at your local drug store, or in the depths of Amazon.com. Many of their specs are similar to the Fire's; some even have more storage. Still, though, they give me the willies because by and large, they're running ancient versions of Android and have essentially no customer support. So we prefer to recommend Amazon's tablets.

Amazon is still in a $50/£50 tablet league of its own with the Fire 7 (2017), but the low-res display is now arguably a cut too far for a modern media-focused device.

There are improvements we’d still like to see (and this new iteration hasn’t addressed all the ones we highlighted in our review of the original, such as the sluggish OS or the tinny speakers), but considering its price point it performs well.

The Fire HD 8 sits in a sweet spot between Amazon's incredibly good value Fire 7 and the larger Fire HD 10. While the performance and features of the Fire HD 8 betters those of the Fire 7, it also manages to outlast the Fire HD 10, making it a slightly more enticing proposition for those who want to travel with it. We also think the size is better than the 10, as this model will slip sweetly into a bag, while still giving plenty of space to play when you pull it out.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is a really good tablet at an impressive price. It’s made even better if you pair it with Show Mode dock. For £109.99 this is a great package. Its screen is fair, the build quality is fine and there’s plenty of storage. While it doesn’t feel incredibly fast, it has enough power to do justice to some of Android’s most impressive games. Plus having Alexa on a tablet is a nice touch.

This Amazon Fire 7 review has shown that this is the best tablet at its price point, and will be enjoyed by many who haven't ventured upwards into the more expensive slates. Its comparatively speedy performance and long battery life will made it a solid consumption device. Unfortunately, Prime Video and Netflix marathons deserve a brighter screen, and we wish we could drop the ads (without paying) and add in YouTube and the rest of Google's apps.

Ultimately, Amazon hasn’t messed with a winning formula here. The simple upgrade from the base 8- to 16GB is very useful as it means you can have enough apps installed without constantly seeing the ‘Storage full’ error, or finding that apps have been uninstalled automatically to save space. It’s worth going for the 32GB version if you can afford to, as 16GB will still fill up quickly.

When it comes to tablets that cost this little, it's hard to expect major improvements, even if it is has been two years since the last update. However, the Fire 7's small refinements, like last year's Fire HD 8's minor updates, aren't terribly exciting to write about. So, like I said before, the Fire 7 is about as good as you get for a $50 tablet, particularly if you're a Prime member, but the Fire HD 8 is the better deal.

For years now, I've recommended Amazon's Fire line as my favorite affordable tablets. The current Fire HD 8 continues that legacy. Don't buy the 7-inch Fire, which has inadequate RAM; if you're getting a small Amazon tablet, get this one. (There's also the aforementioned Fire HD 8 Plus that adds more RAM and wireless charging, which we'll review soon.) But I feel like the value equation has wobbled as Amazon's Appstore continues to lack important apps, and Amazon has made it harder to load apps from other sources. That means you're going to have to make the call based on what you want to use your cheap tablet for, and it isn't as clear as it used to be. If you're satisfied by Amazon's content library, plus the streaming services supported here, go for the Fire HD 8. Otherwise you'll sacrifice some battery life, but gain considerable flexibility with Walmart's $64 Onn. 8-inch tablet, which has the standard Google Play store.

With models available in 7-, 8- and 10-inch screen sizes and priced as low as $50 before Prime Day discounts, Amazon's Fire tablets have long been the go-to option for bargain gadget hunters. But with its 2020 refresh of the 8-inch Fire HD 8 tablet, long the Goldilocks option of its line, Amazon is adding a twist that may leave you wondering which one to buy. There are now two 8-inch models to choose from: a baseline Fire HD 8 starting at $90 (£90), and the $110 (£110) Fire HD 8 Plus, which adds wireless charging and slightly better performance. The tablet isn't currently available in Australia but the starting price converts to about AU$160.

For casual TV watching and music listening, the Fire HD 8's screen and speakers prove it to be a solid device for all the basics, and its USB-C port means you can charge it with the same cable your new laptop uses. Though, considering the HD 8’s epic battery life, you won’t need to refuel it often. The Fire HD 8 wouldn't feel so compromised, though, if it could just get Google apps, so you could use Chrome and not rely on Amazon's Silk web browser.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 isn’t a quality tablet by any means, but at $89.99 it’s an amazing deal for those who are invested in the Amazon ecosystem. If you love shopping, watching video, reading, listening to music, and flipping through magazines using Amazon’s services, the Fire HD 8 will do all those things acceptably well. Granted, any other tablet will work just as well, but most will cost more and their UIs are not made to make the Amazon experience as seamless. Those looking for slightly better performance might consider the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus, which has 3GB of RAM and includes wireless charging.

Amazon’s new Fire HD 8 tablet updates the previous model with important hardware features including a refined design, a faster processor, USB-C charging and a longer battery life. At $90, it’s an easy sell as a living-room slate -- a device that everyone in the family can use to watch videos, play mobile games and browse the web. It can also double as a makeshift Echo device thanks to Show Mode and hands-free Alexa. The biggest drawback is Amazon’s Fire OS, which constantly pushes the retailer’s products and services in your face.

My perception of the Fire HD 8 hasn’t changed much, even with the update. There’s a reason why this slate is so cheap. Amazon, like a twisted, genius mastermind, has somehow managed to convince countless consumers to spend money on an advertisement-heavy trap — er, I mean “tablet” — to get ‘em hooked on Amazon Prime.

Don't buy the 7-inch Fire, which has inadequate RAM; if you're getting a small Amazon tablet, get this one. The Amazon Fire HD 8 is a tablet designed for people who are dedicated users of the company’s entertainment offerings, with the tablet working well as a portable media system. However, it’s not a huge upgrade from its 2018 predecessor, with only a few tweaks, so unless you think you’ll make the most of the extra storage and faster charging on offer here, you may not need this newer model.

Like its less expensive sibling, the Fire HD 8 Plus is generally a good value for those looking for an affordable content consumption device. But because the internal upgrades over the base model aren't that substantial, and the added special features aren't that useful in the grand scheme of things, I just don't think most people should get it over the Fire HD 8.

Physically indistinguishable from the cheaper Fire HD 8, the Plus offers a slightly swifter but otherwise identical tablet experience. Wireless charging is the most significant difference, with the optional Dock making it a viable Echo Show alternative. The Plus is the smarter choice for owners of the 2018 version, but with an unchanged display and similar skills, the standard model is an equally capable entertainment slate for new Prime subscribers.

Amazon's Fire tablet lineup has long been a favorite of ours as good, simple value for the money. Each uses a variant of the Android OS which is tilted heavily toward accessing Amazon services, but also good for streaming video and reading. The particularly important feature here is Show Mode, which makes the tablet act like a hands-free Echo Show smart display, displaying the time and responding to Alexa queries. The new Fire HD 8 Plus ($109.99 and up) is a gray Fire HD 8 tablet with more RAM, wireless charging, and a slightly higher-powered charger. That wireless charging, along with the optional charging dock, really make a difference here, turning the Fire HD 8 Plus into an Echo Show you can take with you. The audio isn't nearly as good as a real Echo Show—you won't use it to bop around to rich music in your living room—but that's a fair trade-off for portability.

Amazon’s pricing is perhaps the Fire HD 8 Plus’ most endearing feature. With a starting cost of just $109.99, it’s hard to beat. You can ratchet up the storage and choose between an ad-supported and non-ad-supported experience. I think the 32GB model without ads is the best option. You save yourself the hassle of ads and can spend the $30 upgrade fee for the 64GB model on a much higher capacity microSD card (or a case) for the tablet.

Its $109.99 price is really $139.99 once you add the dock, but what Amazon offers here is enough for a lot of people—the Plus makes a great little Echo Show-alike to display recipes or act as a fancy alarm clock, plus play videos for the kids, for instance. If you need an inexpensive tablet with full Google Play app compatibility, check out Walmart's Onn. 8-inch tablet instead.

The question for many people will be whether it’s worth spending the extra on the Plus over the regular model. And the simple answer is no. Unless you’re going to get the wireless dock and use it like an Echo Show, you may as well save your money. The standard HD 8 has the same Show Mode and can be used in the same way. The Plus' performance isn’t noticeably better, either.

The line that Amazon has always tried to walk with its Fire 7 tablets is cutting prices low enough to blitz the competition, while still offering enough functionality to be worth buying. This delicate tightrope act hasn’t always paid off – the 2019 model definitely wobbled along the way – but the balance feels much better here. It’s no iPad, but for a tablet that at most costs £80, and can be had for as little as £60, this is better than it has any right to be. If you need something cheap and simple, and you can overlook a mediocre display and an obnoxious operating system, the All-new Amazon Fire 7 (2022) is the best budget tablet around.

The Amazon Fire 7 remains one of the most affordable tablets you can buy, giving easy access to the latest entertainment services. It's housed in a durable case with parental controls for those who want to give it to kids. But there are limitations to what you get for this money. It's generally slow, the UI is dated and the Amazon Appstore feels like it could be more refined. You get what you pay for, they say, and that's the case with the Fire 7. It's certainly good value for money, but the experience matches the price.

The Amazon Fire 7 is the plucky underdog in the tablet world: it doesn’t have a gimmick, it doesn’t have class-leading specs and it won’t have you throwing out your iPad any time soon. But it doesn’t need any of those things because it occupies such a unique space, and that's being a functional and entertaining tablet for roughly the price of half a tank of petrol.

Despite some sizable complaints, it’s still amazing that you can get a functional tablet for $60. The Fire 7 won’t be for everyone, and if you already have a high-end smartphone, then a slightly larger tablet that’s slow and clunky probably won’t appeal. But if you’re looking for a super-affordable tablet for watching streaming video on trips or on your commute, or another way to tap into social media and casual web browsing, then the Fire 7 can meet those budget-conscious needs. Steer clear if you put performance over price, though.

The Amazon Fire 7 sees a bit of a price bump, but that comes with a performance improvement and a slight design change with USB-C. It may not be the best tablet, but for this cheap, it doesn't matter.

If you’re looking for a small, cheap tablet for reading, watching videos, or listening to audiobooks, the Fire 7 is decent — and at this price, decent is acceptable. I’d particularly recommend it as an alternative to the $89.99 Kindle. The Fire 7 offers a higher-density 171ppi display, more storage options, and access to the same Kindle ecosystem — and it plays videos. Plus, based on my experiences with its predecessor, it should last you a relatively long time. While my old Fire 7 is frustratingly slow, it hasn’t actually gotten worse over the years. I expect this version will be technically usable for at least three years, too.

As I was writing this review, one word kept popping into my mind: adequate. This is an adequate tablet for most users. It runs apps adequately, provides access to an adequate range of features and services and has adequate battery life. So, adequate. And, for the price, that’s fair enough – this is a cheap tablet that will perform adequately. The other thing to consider with the Fire 7 is that you aren’t just buying a tablet; you are buying into Amazon’s entire ecosystem. You buy books and movies from Amazon using built-in apps. You buy other apps from Amazon. You buy stuff from Amazon. Of course, there’s a pattern there: Amazon for all things. If that isn’t an issue for you, then this is a great pick for a spare tablet or one for the kids that you won’t mind if they break it. (You could also consider a tablet like the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition for younger children, as they are more resilient and come with a free replacement guarantee). But, bottom line and overall, the Fire 7 is an adequate tablet for Amazon users.

Once again, I'll reiterate — this device is incredibly cheap. Comparing it to a premium tablet from Samsung or Apple is unfair, as they can cost as much as ten times what the Fire 7 sometimes goes for. But ultimately, you get what you pay for; this thing runs worse than a $150 phone. The little quality of life features the Fire version of Android is obviously lacking also take away from the experience massively. It's a bunch of small things you can work around, but both the OS itself and several apps in the store seem to be borderline abandonware. Amazon can boast about the processor being a touch faster, or RAM being added, but corner-cutting features like the camera and the janky software will make you think you've picked up a second-hand device that was released years ago. At the price, you probably won't feel hard done by if it winds up in a desk drawer and only comes out when you want to distract a house guest you're not fond of. But equally, there are better things to spend your money on. The device itself is underpowered; basic things like the cameras and speakers are terrible, the app selection is limited, and the store you're forced to use for those apps is worse. There may be an argument for picking one of these up at a deep discount if you're looking for a beater tablet, backup device, or full-color Kindle alternative. However, if Amazon had these on sale and I had a spare $30 in my account, I'd probably just order a pizza instead.

The Amazon Fire 7 tablet’s appeal does not lie in its specs, but rests squarely on its uber-affordable price tag. Customers may be prepared to forgive many shortfalls if the price is at least too low to be regrettable, and that’s likely to be the case with this tablet. The performance is achingly slow, the screen is dingy and lacks detail, and the cameras are woeful. However, if you just want to buy this to entertain a child by playing undemanding games or educational content on it, then its likely to do the trick. What’s more, the enduring battery life will keep it rolling for a good long time.

The thing you should know about Fire tablets is that they aren’t typical Android devices – you’ll need to sideload the Google Play Store, for example, if you want to use Google apps. Amazon’s proprietary interface prioritizes its own apps like Prime Video and Kindle over others. But if you already heavily rely on Amazon services, I can see how the Fire 7 might be tempting – it delivers an Amazon-curated experience for cheap. Unfortunately, if you want a tablet in the $60 price range, you don’t have many non-Amazon options. Two of the more affordable non-Amazon tablets at this time appear to be the Lenovo Tab M7 (starting at $96) and the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite (starting at $100). We haven’t reviewed them just yet, but both at least let you use Google apps without resorting to third-party options. If you’re dead set on a budget Fire tablet, I actually recommend the Fire HD 8 instead. It has a superior HD display, longer battery life and wireless charging. It also supports Show Mode, which basically turns it into a portable Echo Show.

Yes, but only if you know what you’re getting yourself into. The 2022 Fire 7 is a great device if you’re just looking for a screen that you can stream movies to, read e-books on, and play simple games with. If you’re wanting anything other than that or find Fire OS to be irritating, I’d recommend looking for a different tablet. At the price, however, it’s tough to beat.

Should you buy it? Well, you are not really even getting HD resolution if you are watching video content from Prime Video, Disney Plus or Netflix. This is the type of content that people using a multipurpose tablet for, and the picture quality isn’t really that good. If you listen to audio content such as audiobooks, podcasts, or Spotify, the single speaker isn’t that bad, but it isn’t good either. You will get a better audio experience using headphones. What about books, magazines, manga, newspapers and other content? It only has 160 PPI, so the text won’t be as razer sharp as a Kindle Paperwhite. In the end, the Fire 7 2022 edition doesn’t do anything great and does not excel at anything either. You get what you pay for, if you want a high resolution screen with Dolby audio or a super high resolution display, you will have to spend some serious money, such as an iPad Mini which retails for over $500 or one of the Samsung Galaxy tablets which range in price from $200 to $500. If you want to buy something very affordable just to occasionally read or listen to audiobooks, it does the job.

As this review notes in the plentiful, the Amazon Fire 7 isn’t the best tablet that money can buy. What makes this tablet unique is that it unapologetically aims for a small price tag. Practically everything about this tablet can be better, but that would be missing the forest for the trees. It’s not meant to replace your computer, your phone, and not even your iPad. The point of this tablet is to lower the bar of entry into the Amazon ecosystem and to continue to act as a gateway into it. The low price means you can purchase a few and forget about them, and pick them up when switching to your phone or a good iPad isn’t an option. With Prime Day deals, one can snag this one for even lower than its starting price of $60, at which point it becomes a bit of a no-brainer to keep one in the house just because. Keep one on the kitchen table, one on the coffee table next to the sofa, one in the garage, and hand one to each of your kids — that’s the kind of adoption that Amazon is aiming for with the Fire 7. So that the next time you use a display, you have a higher chance of using an allied Amazon service,...

The Amazon Fire 7 is the smallest member of Amazon’s tablet family. The latest refresh adds a bit more power and a lot more battery life to the remarkably affordable tablet. Starting at $59, it is $10 more than its predecessor, but still considerably cheaper than any other mainstream tablet on the market. That price is enticing, you could buy five of them and still not hit the price of a single iPad. But as you would expect, you also aren’t getting the same functionality as an iPad. The Amazon Fire tablets are excellent delivery vehicles for Amazon content like reading in the Kindle app, listening to books in the Audible app or watching streaming shows on Amazon Video. Amazon Fire 7 (2022) (16GB Black) at Amazon for $59.99. It isn’t limited to Amazon only, virtually every streaming video platform is available in the Amazon App Store for Fire OS, along with thousands of other apps, but you just need to set your expectations properly before picking up a Fire tablet.

If you’re looking for an ultra-affordable tablet to watch your favorite shows or read Kindle books while you travel, the Amazon Fire 7 (2022) is a good pick. It’s about as far from the most powerful tablet as you can get, but the price tag is comfortably under $100, so you never really have to worry about a few bumps or knocks. Amazon’s Fire OS might be an adjustment for some people with its lack of Google apps and services, but it’s much easier to feel like you’re on vacation without Gmail or Google Drive in your face. You should have no grumbles grabbing the Fire 7 as a tablet for a grandparent or a casual user, but it’s not one for gamers or anyone looking to do more than the basics. The kids’ version is an even better buy for youngsters with its thick bumper case and curated content library, though it does tip the price over $100.

There are enough upgrades and improvements here to make the Fire 7 well worth the extra $10 / £10 over its predecessor. It’s great to have longer battery life, slightly improved performance and the USB-C port, which makes it so much easier to attach the charging cable. The tiny price means you’ll have to live with dismal photo and video quality from the cameras, and the low-resolution screen. For $30 / £30 more, you could instead get the Fire HD 8 that has a bigger, higher resolution screen, double the storage, better sound and even longer battery life, but you’ll still be stuck with the same cameras and the same limitations in terms of app choice. There aren’t really any comparable Android tablets at this price, especially if you want to stick to known brands such as Samsung. If your budget won’t stretch further than $60 / £60, this is the best tablet you can hope for, but just don’t expect too much.

If you're looking for an affordable tablet that showcases all things Amazon, the new Fire 7 Tablet is a decent option at just $60. The slight performance improvement and significantly boosted battery life justify its slightly higher cost than the previous model. Whichever storage or ad configuration you choose, it's difficult to beat the price. You do have to go into the experience, however, knowing that it will work best with an Amazon Prime Subscription ($139 per year). If you're not invested in Amazon's ecosystem and don't want to pay for a Prime subscription, but still want an Android tablet at a rock-bottom price, look at something like the 8-inch onn. Tablet(Opens in a new window) ($83); we haven't reviewed the latest model yet, but we liked the 2019 version.

Good value considering that you get a tablet, tough case, two-year worry free guarantee and a year’s subscription to Amazon Kids+, the Amazon Fire 7 Kids (2022) is a fun and engaging tablet for younger children. It’s extremely small, although that can be an advantage: this tablet is easier for a child to put in a bag and carry themselves. However, on balance, the slightly more expensive Amazon Fire 8 Kids tablet is probably a better compromise between screen size and price.

The Fire 7 Kids Tablet ($109.99) isn't very fast and doesn't have a high-quality screen, but that likely won't matter to the younger children more apt to use one. The main thing to focus on is the value. Although it costs $10 more than its predecessor, it's a good buy when you consider the whole package: The tablet ($75), case ($25), warranty ($8), and Kids+ subscription ($60) would total $168 when purchased separately. You won't find a comparable tablet combo anywhere near the same price. The minimum entry point for an Apple iPad is $329. The iPad completely outperforms the Fire 7 Kids Tablet in almost every measurable way, but it should considering the price differential. On the Android side, options such as the Lenovo Tab P11 Plus $259.99 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 ($229.99) don't include the kid-focused extras you get here. Simply put, if you want the best budget-friendly tablet for your kid, Amazon's offerings, including the Fire 7 Kids as well as the larger Fire HD 8 Kids ($139.99) and Fire HD 10 Kids ($199.99), are tough to beat.

However, once I turned it on, it became clear this isn’t the tablet for me. The form factor is perfect, and the screen quality tradeoff makes sense for the price, but the processor in this so-called new tablet is very slow — far too slow for 2022.

Just about managing to justify the £10 price bump with sizable leaps in performance and battery life, the Fire HD 8 (2022) inches ahead of its predecessor to be the best choice for this budget. The new Fire HD 8's biggest strength is the same thing that has consistently made the Amazon Fire tablet so appealing in the past: it's an affordable and easy way to get access to movies, TV shows and games. It won't give you the same performance or feature set you'd get from a much more expensive Samsung or Apple tablet, but it gets all the basics right. It's definitely best seen as a device to access Amazon's popular services. So if you want something you can carry around with you and still get your Prime Video fix, enjoy fun casual gaming, Kindle books and Alexa smarts, but don't want to pay a small fortune for the privilege, the Fire HD 8 is the tablet for you.

If you want a cheap tablet that you can throw in the bag or use as a smart home display, the Fire HD 8 has you covered. It offers all-day battery life (and then some), while providing enough of an upgrade in the performance department to warrant your hard-earned dollars.

When Amazon upgraded the Fire HD 8 in 2020, it made a couple of notable design changes, including moving the location of the front-facing camera and adding USB-C charging, plus wireless charging for the HD 8 Plus, that made it feel like an overall more significant upgrade than the one you get with this year's Fire HD 8 (2022). But given all the supply chain issues and inflationary pressures, it's about what I was expecting from a new model and in line with Amazon's formula for incremental upgrades -- most notably that aforementioned hexa-core processor -- that move the needle forward enough to justify a small price increase. As I write this, the previous-gen HD 8 (2020) is down to $45 and the Fire HD 10 is $75. With those prices, it's hard to call the new HD 8 a bargain at $100. But you'll certainly see some nice discounts on it throughout the year, and that's when to nab it.

If you’re a Prime subscriber and won’t miss Google apps you might be able to live with the Fire HD 8’s limited selection of apps, mediocre performance and terrible cameras. Most people will be better off with a slightly more expensive Android tablet, but the HD 8 does make for a good kid’s tablet.

The 2020 version of this tablet had an optional wireless charging dock that'd turn the pair into a smart display, and I really liked that. One of the biggest question marks about using a tablet is what you do with it when you're not using it. At least the 2020 version tried to address that point. Then there's the Fire HD 8 Plus for an extra $20 that has an extra gig of RAM and a better-but-still-don't-use-it camera. Oh, and that tablet has wireless charging as well. So really overall, it seems like the Fire HD 8 tablet exists solely so Amazon can say "The all-new Fire HD 8 tablet starts at just $99.99 (but seriously, drop an extra Jackson for the Plus version). So, I'm just left wondering why this tablet exists. For half the price you get a similar experience on a slightly smaller and slightly lower res screen with the Fire 7. For $20 more, with the Fire HD 8 Plus, you get a better experience with more RAM and wireless charging. This tablet just sits in the middle. So, for my money, I'd skip this one and go with either of those other two options.

The Fire HD 8 is a clear step up from the entry-level Fire 7. While the Fire 7 has an appealing $59.99 price, its low-resolution screen and slow processor are enough reasons to move up to the Fire HD 8. Yes, the Fire HD 8 is still a little slow, its cameras are mediocre, and its screen isn't as sharp as more expensive devices. But when you consider how affordable it is, it becomes an appealing option for Amazon Prime subscribers, first-time tablet buyers, or anyone seeking a robust spare slate to carry on adventures. If you're concerned about performance or screen quality, however, the Fire HD 10 is faster and has a sharper, brighter screen, and thus retains our Editor's Choice award.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is a tablet that gives you the bare minimum for streaming video on the go. If you use Amazon's other services, like Amazon Music or Amazon Alexa to control your home, you'll find more to like with the Fire HD 8. It can't compete with the cheapest Samsung options, but if you need a cheap tablet and you find this one on sale, it's a fine impulse buy.

The Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Kids Pro 2022 are tablets designed for children. Thanks to the Amazon Kids Dashboard, parents have full control over the use of the tablets. However, there are some drawbacks in terms of hardware. You can read more about these in the review.

It’s not cool, it’s not fast and the screen could be brighter, but as a tablet for younger kids the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids is pretty much in a class of its own. True, buying an iPad would give you access to a wider range of apps and games and Apple’s own curated experience and parental controls, but it’s going to cost you a lot more and it won’t be anywhere near as robust. The Fire HD 8 kids gives your offspring easy access to content that will keep them entertained – and even learning – while giving you peace of mind that they won’t break it and that they won’t come across anything you wouldn’t want them to. For an extra £50, that’s a bargain.

Amazon has cornered the kid-friendly tablet market with three enticing options. The Fire HD 8 Kids hits a sweet spot at $149.99, with a better screen and smoother performance than the $109.99 Fire 7 Kids. It's certainly not the fastest tablet, but it works well enough that kids won't grow impatient or feel like they're using a toy. But while it's easy to recommend the Fire HD 8 over the Fire 7, it's also worth considering the $199.99 Fire HD 10. For the extra $50, the Fire HD 10 Kids offers enough of a boost in performance and screen quality that it remains our Editors' Choice winner, though it can become pricey if you're buying tablets for a number of children.

It’s a good buy as a general-purpose family tablet. But the extra cost of the Plus features bumps up the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus’s price close to that of some other brands’ Android tablets, which have access to a better library of apps and games.

Amazon's 2022 Fire HD 8 remains good at what it is designed to do: stream Amazon content. If you're a Prime subscriber and want a small, affordable device to use on the couch, in the kitchen, or even with a stand to impersonate an Echo Show, the Fire HD 8 isn't bad. But if you can afford it, the 10-inch model offers a much better overall experience and remains our top pick. If you really want to score a deal, wait for the next Prime Day to roll around, when, typically, Amazon's Fire tablets can be had for half-price.

If you're looking for a cheap tablet, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus has a lot to offer. For just a little over $100/£100 you can do a ton of stuff: watch movies, listen to music, check emails, read ebooks, listen to audiobooks, surf the net and (of course) shop on Amazon. In short, if you want a cheap tablet for entertainment, rather than productivity, this is an excellent buy. But is it that much better than the Amazon Fire HD 8, or should you save the extra $20/£20? What about the wireless charging or faster charging generally? Neither would move the needle for me personally, but if you find charging a hassle, it might for you. So that just leaves the extra 1GB of RAM. Is that really worth the extra $20/£20? If you're the sort of person who likes to do two or three things at once, then I'd say: yes, absolutely. I found that doing things like checking email or doing a web search while watching a TV show was that little bit smoother here than the Amazon Fire HD 8. However, if you're happy doing one thing at a time – like reading an ebook or watching a movie and just focusing on that alone – you'd probably be just as happy with the cheaper tablet.

With all of the same issues and a distinct lack of improvements, it’s impossible to recommend the Fire HD 8 Plus (2022) over the cheaper standard version. All of the key areas – performance, display and battery life – are either identical or worse here, and minor changes such as the 5MP camera and 3GB of RAM don’t make enough of a difference to be worth the extra money. If you absolutely must have wireless charging, consider pushing the budget a little further and going for the Fire HD 10 Plus (2021), which starts at £180 for 32GB storage and lockscreen ads. Otherwise, save yourself some cash and go for the standard Fire HD 8 (2022): it looks and performs mostly the same, offering much better value for money overall.

If you ever wondered what tablet you should buy for casual browsing, mobile entertainment, or even for a child, and your first instinct was to search on Amazon, you're the ideal customer for the Fire HD 8 Plus. At $120, the latest model is not the cheapest of the Fire tablet bunch, but it's certainly a compelling option for its sharp visuals, enduring build quality, and exceptional battery life. The drawbacks include the lackluster camera quality and app support, and the abundance of ads should you opt for the base model. If you (or your child) don't mind those compromises, then the latest Amazon tablet is a surefire pickup.

An expensive tablet is something of a questionable purchase these days, particularly if you’re living on a tight budget, or already own a large smartphone. That’s why a super-affordable tablet like the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus (2022) is so appealing. On paper, you get practically everything you expect from an iPad or other premium tablet for not much more than the cost of an ad-supported Netflix subscription. That comparison is rather apt, as ads are how Amazon has achieved such an absurdly cheap price point for the HD 8 Plus. But is the low cost of this budget tablet worth the tradeoffs, or has Amazon cut too many corners?

Overall, the Fire HD 8 Plus is a nifty little tablet, but you’ll really only find a use for it if you’re subscribed to Amazon Prime. At $119.99, you can think of it as a souped-up remote control for Alexa that comes with a few perks, like quick access to streaming, ebooks, and podcasts through Amazon’s ecosystem. It’s the perfect balance between the cheaper Amazon Fire 7 and Fire HD 10 tablets and, in my opinion, makes the most sense both price and feature-wise.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is a cracking tablet for older kids, with just a few caveats to be aware of. It doesn’t have the hardware to run more demanding games, so don’t expect it to stand-in for a console, while it’s £50 more expensive than the standard Fire HD 8. To my mind, that’s not a problem, as the case and the one-year Kids+ subscription give you plenty of value, but kids in the 9-11 age range might not be bothered with either. Still, if you’re looking for a device that gives kids plenty to do and that keeps you as a parent in control, then the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is hard to beat.
