Since I am already using an ROG Ally, should I upgrade to the Ally X? Is it even considered an upgrade since the performance is the same, but I get a bunch of quality of life improvements on the Ally X? As for the price, the ROG Ally X is at RM4,299 – which is a whole thousand more than the ROG Ally when it was first announced. Given that the Ally has come down in price, it’s not easy to pick between the Ally and the Ally X. Remember – Ally X has a lot of upgrades over the original Ally, but ultimately – you still get the same level of performance at double the battery life and no more annoying fan noise.

The Asus ROG Ally provides improvements upon the Steam Deck formula in most areas, with the more streamlined nature of Valve’s software being that devices main coup over the Asus. But, it offers a sleeker chassis, a more open operating system as well as faster gaming performance. You will have to fork out around twice the price of the Steam Deck to get this machine though. There’s now key competition at a similar price now too, with the Lenovo Legion Go offering a larger and higher resolution display, as well as the neat trick of detachable controllers. However, the Asus ROG Ally beats it for its first-party software experience, portability and more satisying controls. Performance is impressive given the fact this is a handheld system but, with a typical 10fps improvement on the Steam Deck, it’s not significant enough to be a no-brainer purchase. It’s difficult to hit a high enough frame rate to make the most of the 120Hz refresh rate and some games, such as Returnal, are unplayable even with compromised graphics settings.

También debemos destacar que se haya añadido un puerto USB4 de hasta 40 Gbps, manteniendo el antes único puerto USB 3.2 Gen2 de 10 Gbps. Estos, junto con el slot micro-SD que ahora no debería dar problemas, hacen que podamos conectar un sinfín de periféricos o ampliar la capacidad de almacenamiento sin abrir la consola, que ya de por si se duplica con su SSD M.2 de 1 TB. Mantiene eso si la conectividad Wi-Fi 6E, pues depende del procesador, y mejora detalles como los altavoces, algo más potentes. No podemos olvidarnos de destacar que se haya duplicado la capacidad de su batería hasta los 80 Wh, casi duplicando su autonomía, y que se haya mejorado el sistema de refrigeración ROG Zero Gravity para hacerla más fresca y silenciosa.

Perdemos el puerto XG Mobile para la conexión de tarjetas gráficas externas, pero lo cierto es que no es algo a lo que se le haya dado demasiada importancia en el primer modelo (aunque podría tener bastante potencial para usarla como consola de sobremesa). Sin duda alguna, la ventaja más importante de esta variante es su batería extra, que nos permite prácticamente duplicar los tiempos de juego al pasar de 40 Wh a 8 Wh. En un modelo con este rendimiento y especificaciones es algo que se agradece y que la dota de muchas más posibilidades, multiplicando por más de dos su autonomía. Aumenta el peso en algo más de 60 gramos, pero no se nota en el conjunto y se gana mucho más en autonomía. También se ha mejorado el sistema de carga y ahora puede cargar a 100 W. Incomprensiblemente, ASUS incluye un cargador de solo 65W.

It’s a console I can definitely and whole-heartedly recommend, though its RM4,299 price tag is almost certainly going to cause hesitation among potential adopters, especially among newcomers to the gaming handheld ecosystem.As pricey as it is, though, the overall improvements with this handheld make it hard to recommend folks to opt for the first generation Ally. Again, it’s more polished, has significantly improved battery life, a microSD card slot that won’t barbeque your external storage with its thermals, and ports that are infinitely more practical for the user.

If you’re new to the whole PC gaming handheld thing, and want to play more than just your Steam library without messing about with Linux, the Asus ROG Ally X is now the obvious choice. It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.

Estas tarjetas también deben ser capaces de aguantar todos los juegos actuales, pero  la mayoría de ellos en configuraciones de detalles medios y bajos y con bajas resoluciones. Juegos más antiguos, o menos exigentes todavía pueden ser jugados con buena calidad de gráficos.
