X13 CPU performance: Once again, AMD Ryzen 4000 comes out on top
Compared to last years Lenovo ThinkPad X390 (the Intel version) and ThinkPad X395 (the AMD version), the results for the newer Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 vary greatly depending on the processor. For the Intel version of the Lenovo X13, we can report a stagnation on performance. While the CPU performance weirdly starts out lower than the ThinkPad X390, it quickly jumps back to the same level. It is a totally different story on the AMD side of the fence. Last years Lenovo ThinkPad X395 was clearly slower in the Cinebench test. The ThinkPad X13 AMD however blows all other 13 inch X ThinkPads out of the water performance wise. While its performance jumps up and down under prolonged load, it is even faster on average than the much bigger and much more expensive Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme with H series CPUs.

Lenovo X13 GPU performance: Intel trails behind AMD
It is no secret that the Intel UHD Graphics 620 is long overdue for its retirement and the GPU benchmarks of the ThinkPad laptop X13 affirm this. The AMD version, which is supported by 16 GB DDR4-3200 memory in dual-channel-mode, is twice as fast as the Intel model. At least, the GPU performance is the saving grace for the bigger Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme, as its Nvidia GPU is still a whole lot faster than the integrated AMD Radeon GPU.

First impressions: AMD ThinkPad X13 could deliver workstation performance in an subnotebook body
Of course, there are many more measurements to take and tests to perform, but the first results of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 with AMD Renoir are promising. It may be the first 13 inch ThinkPad laptop with a performance level that can rival much bigger workstations, at least in terms of the CPU. Look out for our reviews of the ThinkPad X13 Intel and ThinkPad X13 AMD in the coming weeks.
